I don't think most people realize that this is a really sad song. Not evil but sad because it tells of a depressed mood and hopeless future without color or brightness.

The late Brian Jones played the sitar on this one which gives it it's distinctive sound. Used as a theme in a few Vietnam war movies as well, perfectly encapsulates the despair and desperation of that terrible conflict.Reply

I think sometimes the melody and beat over shadow the lyrics and what the message conveyed gets lost like many other great songs. Subject to interpretation as everything is I guess.
