Alphabet Cars: E is for Edsel
The Model 40 is well known to Ford enthusiasts, but the mainstream auto world has rarely heard of it, and focus lands on the failed 50s sedans when the name Edsel is uttered. That hype and blunder overshadows the design and legacy Edsel had at Ford. One of his first projects was the restyling of the entry Ford – from the Model T, at bargain prices and assembly – to a more refined and stylishly competitive Model A. His time at the design helm also saw the change from the vertical grills of the A's to the laid back and decorative monikers that made the 34 Ford stand alone in the style of classic autos and subsequent Hot-Rodding. The '34 Coupe, Vicky, Phaeton and 5 window Deluxe are still highly sought after, and often rendered as copies. The most famous specimens were the Bonny & Clyde history machine and the ZZ-Top 'Eliminator'.
