Cars as Stars: Herbie #53

The Disney movies started my fascination with the VW Beetle. One of the most numerous cars produced on the planet in the history of automobilia - they quit being imported to the US in 1978, though were still available in Mexico and Brazil through the 80's. One of the main reasons that Brazil is on my list of places to visit - is to find a late model Bug - and explore the many older graveyards of dismantled and damaged Bugs. By the time I was old enough to drive - I had already been collecting parts for my first one. You could say I was bitten by the Bug – through college – I worked summers at a local shop that specialized in the little German rollerskates. I refurbished and flipped rides out of his bone yard; he has some amazing history sitting on blocks behind that fence; including one of the first 1948 VW Beetles imported into the US.
