The Fiat X1/9 was a mid-engine Targa roadster from the 70's, it is powered by the same motor as the 128 Sedan – in an all aluminum uni-body frame that hovers around 2000 lbs. In stock trim, the four cylinder 1290 cc motor was capable of about 80 horsepower. Unleashed upon the US market in 1974, the car competed conceptually with the same market slice as the Porsche 914. Neither car was an Autobahn-stormer racking up huge top end speeds – but they were torquey and punchy in the usable spectrum where you actually legally get to drive. Both cars hid the Targa top under the front hood when you were running topless. Performance time was 0-100 km (66 mph) in under ten seconds – which is plenty chipper to get onto the free-way and still feel like you are in a go-kart doing it.
