Getting through Boot Camp is tough. The long hours, the lack of sleep, the yelling, the endless push-ups, marches to nowhere and back, boring classes and of course entirely too much of people taking themselves ENTIRELY TOO SERIOUS. And so - humor will creep in, practical jokes, poor puns, bad spoonerism, impossible tasks, and General Silliness to ward off the fear, danger, boredom.

The military has a dark sense of humor, and not all of the jokes are funny, or understood unless you have been there. And many of them are nearly ancient classics. As my Grandfather was a Senior Chief in the Navy - he warned me of many of the jokes they would play .... and indeed, in 45 years since he went through camp - many of the same jokes were still played.

I had a habit of being the class clown at school, it is not a trait that I outgrew when I hit the military. I was, and still am, a sarcastic sumnabiatch - within the lines of military decorum and protocol... but I do have a tendency to push those lines. For those of you that have been through Boot Camp, Follow on Schools or Overseas Deployment - chime in, share your stories here. The job is tough as hell, we could all use a laugh now and again.
