Reporting to the Manager Water Planning, the Project Engineer, Water Planning is responsible for, developing, maintaining, updating, and clearly communicating different water treatment and management plans within Teck Coal's water quality management program to meet environmental objectives.

Working within Teck Coal's Water Quality Management group, and in close connection with the Environment and Social Responsibility Group, the Project Engineer, Water Planning will be part of a team dedicated to sustainable mining in the Elk Valley surrounding our five open-pit metallurgical coal mines, with particular focus on water quality, fisheries and fish habitat, reclamation, and the overall health of the regional aquatic ecosystem.

Responsibilities :


- Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
- Organize and own in accordance with program objectives to achieve permit compliance and in accordance to Teck's water mitigation strategy
- Work directly with water Research and Development, projects, operations, modelling, hydrology, monitoring, permitting, and reclamation groups to ensure plan development and execution meet commitments
- Develop and maintain schedule and budget
- Identify and manage risks and opportunities
- Develop strategic visions for improvements in sustainability and put these strategies into practice
- Engage directly with communities of interest (including, but not limited to, regulatory agencies and first nations) to communicate the plan and progress, gather feedback, and integrate this feedback as necessary
- Support water projects from conceptual development to full-scale implementation
- Engage and coordinate with third-party consultants in support of developing water planning objectives
- Produce accurate and timely reporting
- Incorporate and embed Teck's adaptive management framework and ensure effective management of change processes are employed when updating
- Participate in Water Planning or otherwise related activities with linkages to their assigned water treatment and management plans to facilitate alignment
- Consider and include different water quality mitigation and treatment methods, timelines, and locations
- Integrate inputs from mine-sites, previous projects, other environmental programs, and stakeholders into plans
- Ensure plans are practical and executable while incorporating flexibility and adaptability based on ongoing learnings

Qualifications :


- University Degree in Mining, Engineering (environmental, civil, mechanical, chemical, mining), Environment, or related field
- Minimum Five years' experience focused on project management and coordination, or project controls, at progressing levels of responsibility and scope
- A professional designation, or the ability to work towards one, in a related field would be considered an asset
- Motivated self-starter, with the ability to work under minimal supervision, and manage several priorities simultaneously
- Ability to thrive in a fast paced environment including leading change and making recommendations
- Strong communicator capable of connecting with all levels of the organization
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite®: Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Visio
- Direct experience in mining would be considered an asset
- Experience in program development and implementation would be an asset
- Experience in water, waste water, or environmental projects or operations would be an asset
- Strong communicator capable of connecting with all levels of the organization
