Why you'll love Cisco:

Are you ready to change the World? Do you want to be passionate about your employer and the brand you represent? Everything is converging on the Internet, making networked connections more meaningful than ever before in our lives. Our employees' groundbreaking ideas impact everything imaginable - from entertainment, retail, healthcare, and education, to public and private sectors, smart cities, and everyday devices in our homes. Here, that means you will take creative ideas from the drawing board to dynamic solutions that have real world impact. You'll collaborate with Cisco leaders, partner with expert mentors, and develop incredible relationships with colleagues who share your interest in connecting the unconnected. You'll be part a team that cares about its customers, enjoys having fun, and you'll take part in changing the lives of those in our local communities. Come prepared to be encouraged and inspired!

What you’ll do:

Address Sanitizer (ASAN) is one of the best tools available for programmers working in C/C++. It is capable of detecting a multitude of runtime issues, without incurring high memory usage or significantly impacting performance. At Cisco we value good tools but one of our products uses a customized memory allocator which is incompatible with ASAN. Moreover ASAN does not work on Persistent Memory (PM), like Intel Optane DC Persistent Memory, and with databases moving toward using PM, having tools for debugging and finding errors in programs that use PM, is becoming and important venue. In this internship, we propose to implement ASAN-like functionalities on top of our customized allocator, with the intent to detect scenarios such as: double-frees, buffer overflows, allocator metadata corruption, use-after-free, and other errors and memory leaks. Moreover, these techniques will have to be implemented such that they have low overhead and low memory usage. This internship work will be carried out in close collaboration with Cisco engineers.

Who you are:

- Able to work autonomously and to find innovative solutions to non-trivial problems
- Independent and self-driven
- View team collaboration as instrumental to achieving success.

What you need to be eligible:

- Master or PhD student in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Communication Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related major
- Minimum of a 4.5 GPA or higher
- Good C/C++ knowledge
- Basic knowledge of address sanitizer or related tools (valgrind)
- Familiarity with memory allocation
- Good verbal and written English

Why Cisco
#WeAreCisco, where each person is unique, but we bring our talents to work as a team and make a difference. Here’s how we do it.

We embrace digital, and help our customers implement change in their digital businesses. Some may think we’re “old” (30 years strong!) and only about hardware, but we’re also a software company. And a security company. A blockchain company. An AI/Machine Learning company. We even invented an intuitive network that adapts, predicts, learns and protects. No other company can do what we do – you can’t put us in a box!

But “Digital Transformation” is an empty buzz phrase without a culture that allows for innovation, creativity, and yes, even failure (if you learn from it.)

Day to day, we focus on the give and take. We give our best, we give our egos a break and we give of ourselves (because giving back is built into our DNA.) We take accountability, we take bold steps, and we take difference to heart. Because without diversity of thought and a commitment to equality for all, there is no moving forward.
