Abracadabra English opened its doors in 2012, growing steadily from 2 teachers up to the current complement of 9 teaching staff. The teenage and adult sectors have expanded considerably, although the primary sector, with students from more than 20 primary schools, makes up the biggest part.
Abracadabra is a small family run English school based in Segovia which is only 30 minutes by train or an hour by bus from the capital city of Madrid. The academy has gained a high reputation in the city and in order to maintain this standard we are looking for a very dedicated and hard working individual.

To complete our team of 9 teachers, We are searching for a full-time passionate teacher of English, who is interested in teaching, in their students and in training and development in order to become the best teacher possible. We are not looking for native or non-native speakers, wanting to have a year abroad, preparing light conversation.

This post is for teaching children from 5 to 9 years old, in age groups, of 8 students. There is a scheme of work to follow which provides short term and long term planning goals but leaves the teacher with flexibility on how to teach the material. Apart from all the special skills needed to work with the littler ones, it is essential that you have a desire for all the students to improve, while enjoying the classes.

Students range from 5 to 70 years old. The Primary classes follow an in-house Scheme of Work. These are continually updated to incorporate new ideas. Primary classes are very dynamic and incude stories, grammar, students' own research projects, songs and games to enhance learning and students academic English progress.

Teenage and adult classes are usually based around a text book but allow teachers to use their own skills to complement the text book with their own resources. We continually strive to make sure that students are progressing and each year a good number of teenagers and adults sit the Cambridge exams. We are a Cambridge Preparation Centre and work closely with our local Cambridge Exam Centre, both entering students throughout the year and attending teaching seminars.

Apart from the English classes themselves at the academy, there are opportunities for outside business classes, in the surrounding area. And we are not just about classes...We have run a book club at the library, taught groups in the University, held storytelling and craft events, entered a choir in a Carol singing contest (in English, of course), adapted and directed a version of the Musical 'Oliver' with 18 children between 9 and 12 years old, plus a gastronomy tasting event for adult students. This year we are working with one of the local cinemas to promote films in English on certain Saturday mornings. In June 2019 we ran the inaugural overseas trip with Abracadabra to Gorey, Ireland, and in 2020 we will repeat the experience but with double the number of youngsters and 3 teachers!

If you consider yourself well-suited for the position advertised, we would love to receive a Covering Letter and Curriculum Vitae from you.

The contract will run from 8th January 2020 to mid-June 2020, with monthly pay pro rata for those two months.
You must have a love for working with very young children and experience of doing so, along with the patience, control, and calmness necessary for a motivating working environment.

A positive attitude and constant smile help the children a lot, as does a willingness to sing and praise where due. Working with little children also requires a lot of energy, ideas and creativity, as the classes will be dynamic, the children need pushing constantly and there has to be attention to learning styles and differentiation.

The position can be one of the most rewarding in the school, but only if your heart is in it and you are focused on your goals and the children's goals.
Salary and Benefits

There are also regular team meetings with the Young learners or the FCE groups to look at things in detail and and make sure we are all working together.

In January / February there are parent teacher days, where you practise your Spanish, meet and inform the parents and enjoy a 3 course meal out.

There is an annual Christmas meal in one of the best restaurants and at the end of the year we always do an activity together, the teachers and secretarial staff.

Uniform of t-shirts, polo shirts and hoodie is provided.

The working hours are between Monday and Thursday, which means a long weekend nearly every week, to recharge batteries, plan and absorb culture.

We don't just employ teachers at Abracadabra. We aim to develop and train as well, in order for all staff to fulfill their potential.
