#9 Fair point, Paul. Presumably the waves of incoming pre-wedding, bucks and hens party goers haven't heard of cultural life beyond Kuta? I love the rural life in Bali and the unspoilt scenery away from the well tramped ways. I must admit, however, to being totally ignorant of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida. Must do some research before we set foot in that direction again. ๐Ÿ“–

Your buzz is enticing, Paul, and Nusa Lembongan looks idilic and pristine. More so, perhaps, since your photos suggest a lack of tourists to dilute local culture and practices, an inevitable corrupting consequence of the tourist dollar and of visitors with little regard for non-western conventions. Or am I being ridiculously optimistic? Perhaps your small island escape is just too close to the Aussie playgrounds of Kuta?

The need to attract tourist income vs protecting the environment and endangered species is a delicate balance, an issue that developing countries focusing on eco-tourism often grapple with. However, I enjoy reading your article Paul. The manta, as you describe it, is magnificent.

I've never fashioned myself a world traveler. I'm more of a Jack Kerouac "On the Road" type of guy. But, I must say, if I were to come into boatload of money, I might wash up on your beach in Bali. I might even bring Karen. That would be an adventure for all of us.

That's my kind of ride, @Paul Walters! And I could have used something like that on Sunday, instead of the downhill skiing I did. Not at all the same thing, not at all relaxing. My leg workout a few days before set me up for disaster on Sunday. I had to step after every couple of turns to lean forward and stop my thighs from burning. So. Much. Pain. It took two of those runs before my legs loosened up and I was able to enjoy myself. Of course, at least I wasn't trying to ski uphill!

The Komodo Dragons are simply magnificent! But I find that it always helps, whether on scooter or on foot, to carry a live chicken when nearing one. Not a sacrificial chicken, there is no way the dragon would catch the chicken, but it would keep him occupied.
