beBee Quotes from Actual BeeZ

~ 100 buzzes
Independent BeeZ speak in Hives of Words that they themselves connive. / Bee! /

Stirred on by none other than our fine "Bill the Quote-Master" Quotes, here are some Categories for ya:

Category I: "Shining Original Quotes," come as a separate 'Quote Buzz' that further puts it into intrinsic context. If a be-Bee writer Quotes her/himself in her own text, that also lands in this category. This is in contrast to:

Category II: "Extracted Natural Quotes" will come from "beBee Quotes by BeeZ" if the author did not write them in the text as an Original Quote, or if another reader 'took' a Quote out of the content, putting it in the Comments. You may want to read this twice, but no need as you'll get the gist after just coming back for more. So as you write, all, separate your Original Quotes out in the text using the Insert-a-Quote as shown below - and we'll Collect them in this Hive.

Tsunami: Your quotes will all get mixed up in your Buzzes, and Comment streams, so if you're here on beBee for a year, you can collect 365 Comments, each a Quote of your own. So who's going to publish the huge book we will generate? That's what I want to know! And down the pike, there's always room for beBee to bee a book publisher, too! I can just see it.... bee!

Ben, I am suspicious of those who see "influencing people" as a life goal. But I do agree with you that we all need to work to keep the "I" out of our discussions, if we are to be part of a community in which discussion is intended to be a bridge, rather than a soapbox. Cheers!

#150 @Franci Eugenia Hoffman I will comment (albeit awkwardly) out of plain good manners (I was brought up that way; and, for the first few decades of my life anyway, was actually known amongst my friends and family as "Mr. Manners"); regarding anything I post or comment on, however, they are usually "stand alone/RES IPSA LOQUITUR thingies" --unless explicitly requesting engagement or posing queries, etc. I do however often read followup responses, and sometimes join in a discussion, if it seems necessary

#138 You can early or absentee vote in most jurisdictions with little or no issue. All you have to do in Virginia is work 30 miles away or kick up a fuss and say it is too hard to get to the polls. I know someone who works around the corner from her polling location, could literally go vote on her lunch break, and voted early.

"Difficulty" for the U.S., per Wikipedia:

"the US is no longer primarily an agrarian society, and Tuesday is now normally a work day throughout the country with most voters working. This has led activists to object to Election Day (ED) being on a Tuesday on the grounds that it decreases voter turnout. They advocate either making ED a federal holiday or allowing voters to cast their ballots over two or more days. Activists also encourage workplaces to allow their employees paid time off in lieu of such mandates and encourage voters to make use of early voting and postal voting facilities when available and convenient.

Several commentators have noted the irony of ED being a regular working day, while Veterans Day, which typically falls on November 11, is a federal holiday. Many have called for the holidays to be merged, so citizens can have a day off to vote. This would be seen as a way to honor veterans by exercising the democratic right to vote.[8][9]

...[DE, HI, KY, MT, NJ, NY, OH, WV & PR] have declared ED a civic holiday. Some other states require that workers be permitted to take time off from employment without loss of pay. CA Elections Code Section 14000 and NY State Election Law[10] provide that employees without sufficient time to vote must be allowed two hours off with pay, at the beginning or end of a shift. Democracy Day, a planned federal holiday to coincide with ED, was unsuccessfully proposed in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate in 2005. It was later reintroduced in the Senate in 2014 and has not been enacted.

...Some employers allow their employees to come in late or leave early on ED to allow them an opportunity to get to their precinct and vote."

One of the most harmful abusive behaviors is to ignore, walk away from, or brush off the concerns of another person.

Often silence is exceedingly hurtful and it's shocking how many people stop talking when emotions run high.

#15 First two chapters: Yeah, I´d sign this. We could also say that it depends on who is the initial aggressor.

As a general tactic in peaceful times it would be an instrument of abuse. Agreed.

Chapter three: The type that does not accept your decision to not have a conflict/relationship will be trouble either way. I am not sure if there is a "right" or "wrong" solution for dealing with this rare type of person.

"Safety" when dealing with a negative person (people you don´t want near you automatically become "negatives") would definitely mean as little contact as possible, even if it means escalation.

They might be less aggressive if you do as they wish but as they don´t do you good because you don´t want to be around them it´s not the best choice.
    Robert Bacal
    13/09/2016 #15 Robert Bacal
#11 There's tons packed into what you wrote, @Aurorasa Sima Perhaps the bottom line is that CONTEXT counts when it comes to communicating, or not communicating. I can think of dozens of situations where walking away in silence, literally, is the best tactic.

However, when it becomes a tactic to control, deny, or otherwise ignore a person's concerns, then I think the action isn't constructive.

There's one more part to this, and that is what the person you walk away from does in response, which may be to escalate and follow you, or try to restrain you from leaving, which is by far, the more extreme. Walking away is often infuriating, and with people in a rage, I'm not sure what would be best. Esape to safety I suppose. Ideas?

I understand how walking away/remaining silent is very hurtful for the other person. I will admit to showing this behavior occasionally when someone is trying to force me into a conflict (which is abusive as well!) .

I would not call it "demeaning".

It´s a value statement: "Up to you if you want to continue this relationship at my conditions."

It can be hurtful to be the one who is emotionally invested more when trying to force your will onto others.

Don´t play hardball if you don´t understand the rules.

#3 it's a good point, @Charles David Upchurch. It's hard to capture the complexities of communication in a few words. I see situations where exiting is smart and even preferred, but what I'm talking about here is the "silent walkaway". I think saying:: "I can't deal with this right now, but later" is fine, or any of the variants.

Clearly when faced with someone out of control or intending harm, removing yourself from the situation to ensure safety, OR to make sure one's emotions don't explode makes sense.

Am I explaining this at all clearly? Does more specificity make it more agreeable for you?
    Erroll -EL- Warner

This paints the intentions of the person who walks away from a conflict with too broad a brush.

As someone who has been subjected to verbal abuse, I can say from personal experience that when I hang up on an abusive phone caller, choose not to respond to a private verbal attack, or walk away from a verbal abuser in public, my actions are simply those of someone standing up for himself, and these actions are not intended to be abusive to the person who was abusing me.

I have chosen such action rather than trying to force the other person to behave differently. I could escalate the conflict, as others do, with criticism, put-downs, screaming, or even violence. If I did, I would be just as much in the wrong as the person who was verbally abusing me. That's not how I want to be.

I am most powerful when I control me. Choosing who I talk to is my right, and within my own control.

#3 We need more 'Positivity' right? I love the image and how the man appears to be kneeling down. Such a concept of servitude, while prevalent in the good medical community, espouses all public health workers and attitude towards helping the general public. One note, @Ben Pinto - this hits the mark for ethnicity and gender! Universal image that captures the mind. Thanks!

@Julio - There is always a lot of discussion about setting prices, and getting "what you're worth". Also much talk about how when value is present, price doesn't matter. All of which is mostly drivel. You post, however, makes the point that one must deliver value commensurate with price, and that it is then, and only then that the price will be paid without complaint or question. Good post, great insight. Cheers!

The picture in this banner shot behind me was made of two images that I superimposed. The illusion was perfect. The shadow of the camels comes from behind the Berber and as such you see the shadow of one of them on his clothing. Further, you see a small caravan on their way to the desert oasis you see far in the back. The mountains cause the journey to be a long one as the travelers must wind through them from valley to valley.

Thank you for this awesome post Mags. There is a hive I started simply called Quotes. I like yours because it is specific to quotes from Bees. On the one I created you can buzz any quote, difficult but whenever possible with the Author's credit. I too have categorized quotes into three categories as can be seen by the Hives description: Revive, Derive, or Contrive Jive for Hive

    Let's look at each.
Revive - that's for posting someone else's quote - you are breathing some life into it.
Derive - a good example of this is a makeover like my "Do not just practice till perfect; perfect till you need no practice." This actually has roots in three distinctly different existing quotes and the variations of them, but it offers a more succinct approach with a clever use of the two words perfect and perfect.
Today I saw a quote I rather liked and asked the person posting it for the originator's name. Eventually I tracked down who that probably was that said it back in the nineties. I will post this to the hive, "Quotes' in a short time.
Contrive - that's the quotes that also belong in @Margaret Aranda, MD, PhD's hive.

#3 @David B. Grinberg, number one in my 12000 when it comes to spending the time to tag people on important news, articles, and stuff in general that he knows is of interest to them. I am used to people tagging me and a bunch of others because they want us to see their articles, but David has always brought real value to the 'Dark Side' by using the Platinum Rule instead of the Golden Rule.

Deb, I so understand what you're saying. In the last year I've been pushing for 'there' and not realizing the opportunity my triails were giving me to grow, change,, and achieve what always seemed just outside my reach as I dealt with the rush of day to day life. I would question every move, every thought, every decision instead of just realizing that 'there' was always 'here'

#4 Indeed, @Deb Criveau. Because change is so constant and non-negotiable, I am trying to learn to stop spending an enormous amount of time pursuing being there - in the future. As it is highly likely that there won't be there, at least in the way I conceive it today.
