Dachshunds can actually run really fast ! Mine love to run full pelt. But they are smart and realise I can only hold their lead and run with them for 10 mins from stop to full pace. Then they slow down for me ! So when I walk them I do a few lots of small sprints which is s'posed to be good exercise ? ! ?

Interesting read @Louise Smith. It's sad that there are so many who don't put a lot of thought into ownership of a dog. We have had 2 dogs over a period of 21 years. I researched the breeds, met the parents and still took some time to decide before jumping to bring one home. Our first dog was a sweetheart of a Cocker Spaniel. Sadly, she developed cancer at age 7 and passed right before her 8th birthday. I wasn't sure I wanted another dog after feeling her loss. As time passed, we decided to research breeds again and we ended up bringing a Boston Terrier home. They are also an energetic breed, no matter what the internet may state. They are very loving but are also very dependent on their families/owners. They require a lot of attention because they want to be a part of everything. My boston terrier is 13 years old now. He still has spunk but I've been noticing some strange behavior at night. I would never pick a breed because they appear to be the flavor of the year. And, people need to realize it's a long term, full time commitment if they decide to bring a dog into their home. Frenchies were popular here about 10 years ago. I'm not sure if they are still as popular as they are in Australia. I know Pit Bulls are extremely popular, but they end up with many irresponsible owners who bring them home for purposes other than love. Many use their pit bulls as status symbols- they are probably one of the breeds in the US that end up in shelters the most. I could be wrong but I see so many.

I have 2 dachshunds and use them in therapy frequently. Scapa is 6yo black and tan male. Lila is 5 yo chocolate and tan female. They are standards but more like tweens than miniatures.
They are very affectionate and intuitive and great comforters for people: adults teenagers children toddlers babies who are upset or angry. Sometimes my clients and I take them for a walk as part of the session.

Because, of course, every dog learns to be the companion of the person they live with. They are such a diverse and successful species precisely because of their affinity to bond with people, most especially the ones who give them affection.

#1 It's common in posh suburban bakeries here too! It's getting more common for cafes to allow dogs outside and provide water bowls.

LOL... Actually, when I had the restaurant/bakery many people would leave their dogs tied up outside. Dogs are "people" too, so I started baking high-end dog cookies. It started as a joke but we ended up selling over 150 pounds of them a week.
