Great info @Lucy Norton. We don't need a total remodel but I'd love to add an island. We have Corian Countertops and they were not built right before we bought our home. Sadly, the company that put them in went into bankruptcy after we bought the home. It's expensive to fix too. My kitchen is 27x17, so an entire remodel would be expensive. We also have ceramic tile and for whatever reasons, the previous owners chose white counters and off white floor tile. It's a major pain to keep clean. One day, I'd love new flooring and counters if it didn't cost an arm and a leg. In the meantime I sweat over my fridge. They also put in a SubZero fridge - the upside, few part and they do last a very long time. Downside? They put in a smaller one with dimensions that are hard to find with fridges that aren't Subzeros and that's because they built a wood cabinet around it and we'd have to tear out part of our wall or counters/cabinets to put one in that fit. I love the new kitchen in this photo above!

Great suggestions. One of the techniques we find helpful is the use of poster board and design magazines. Pick out things you like and paste them to the board. Overtime you start to develop a look or style you like.

Contractors, well this is another story. Having completed a tour of duty in construction, I would recommend that you look at completed projects before you choose, talk to customers. I state this not only because of quality or schedule, but really because of your tastes and requirements should be considered. Each contractor has a price point and quality delivery model.

In our area medium new homes run at $120 sqft. Remodels range from $120-250 (Whole Additions). Bathroom and Kitchen remodels will make your wallet tight and fit. With this in mind, be comfortable with the firm that will remodel your home.

If your not sure about the process and feel you cant manage the budget/schedule. The cost is worth considering a good CM or construction manager. They typically will want a percentage of the total cost. They will help you in considering quotes, materials and schedules. Most importantly they will answer the questions you might have concerning quality and redirect subcontractors.
