Great suggestions @Vannesa Tucker! Especially secondhand materials. I haven't done any remodeling myself but have seen friends go through the process and the high quality/much lower cost leftover material the're able to acquire is impressive.

Great suggestions. One of the techniques we find helpful is the use of poster board and design magazines. Pick out things you like and paste them to the board. Overtime you start to develop a look or style you like.

Contractors, well this is another story. Having completed a tour of duty in construction, I would recommend that you look at completed projects before you choose, talk to customers. I state this not only because of quality or schedule, but really because of your tastes and requirements should be considered. Each contractor has a price point and quality delivery model.

In our area medium new homes run at $120 sqft. Remodels range from $120-250 (Whole Additions). Bathroom and Kitchen remodels will make your wallet tight and fit. With this in mind, be comfortable with the firm that will remodel your home.

If your not sure about the process and feel you cant manage the budget/schedule. The cost is worth considering a good CM or construction manager. They typically will want a percentage of the total cost. They will help you in considering quotes, materials and schedules. Most importantly they will answer the questions you might have concerning quality and redirect subcontractors.
