This discussion is relevant and i agree with its desires. But we have lost our framework due to media and the debate being controlled by powerful institutions. The internet was but a fad for a few geeks who understood the medium. It has now exploded into our lives as Alexa and Google have teamed up to tell us the weather each day to allowing professionals to extend their reach into communities that lack life needs, locally. When the geeks had it no one cared about it. Capitalism saw it and invested their private money. They built the infrastructure. Today we all care as it has invaded our lives. Democracy and capitalism demand that the infrastructure be compensated. If we should do this should not be the debate. How you do this should be. The 5th Amendment is at play here. The internet is going to stay in private hands and capitalism will drive growth and the future with certain government intervention or the government will enter the fray and compensate, own or otherwise fund the infrastructure. These are the real choices. The American people have become duplicitous in their beliefs. They individually want capitalism to work for them but want everything else to be socialized. They want cheap prices at Walmart but want a living wage. These are the equivalent of holding fire and ice in the same hand. If we want socialism then lets vote it in, but right now we cant create a hybrid no mans land as it will then come to roost on the individual. Tell your politicians you want to nationalize the infrastructure and pay taxes to keep it neutral or allow capitalism to work it out with government oversight.
