Absolutely agree that being present is the key to application. I also believe that building positive habits requires thinking about multiple time horizons, but acting in the here and now.

I, too, have a love-hate relationship with the word "maturity" -when it is defined by being sensitive to others and not wrapped up in ourselves exclusively -I'm OK with that. But when it means "acting my age" - Id rather act my shoe-size.
Thanks again for reading and joining the conversation.

I'm not so sure that maturity is all it is cracked up to be. Sometimes we need to recapture that silly youthful spontaneous action that inspires.

    Really enjoyed the read.

Really enjoyed the perspective of the discipline needed for CI. I would also state that we need to be present in the moment we find ourselves. Application requires dedication and focus for the time we set aside for such matters.

Way too many distractions with the false illusion of multitasking.

    Great stuff.

"...what problem you are trying to solve” requires an understanding of the strategic priorities, the processes that underlie them, what is currently happening with those processes that shouldn’t be happening (defects), and what is going well that you don’t want to break (constraints)". This is very correct @Alan Culler. The problem is finding the problem and I agree with you completely.

#4 Much obliged to react Alan, thank you for your add on. Indeed, Practicing Aikido for over fourty years, Kai zen is simply a part of it and the family aspect, being half Italian, an important aspect of my life. Here in the Netherlands we face today similar individualism as we see elsewhere. We also face the immediate damages as a consequence of that. Still refuse to change our ways in that respect. Happy buzzing, enjoy your weekend. :O)

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. No disrespect taken.
So much of what we package as new methodologies is very old. Thank you for pointing this out.
When W. Edwards Demming could not interest US businesses in analytically based improvement processes in the 1950s, he went to Japan and found openness to his methods because they resonated with centuries old Kai Zen principles.
I do admire your points about the community of practice -the loving family with with mutual respect and commitment, missing in so many corporations. As a consultant I have frequently talked with workers who are willing to do "the dumb things that management tells us to do, " rather than working efficiently "so they can get rid of my job."
Thanks again for sharing your insight.

According to Jon Katzenbach and Doug Smith in the Wisdom of Teams three of the defining variables of team performance are :
    1. Shared goal
    2. Shared working approach
    3. Collective work product

Seems like it aligns with your view of team alignment. :-)

Great read and supports the fact that a unified system of team building with achievable goals will always succeed over the free range proffesional system. (A group of mavericks.)

Sustainability has become a word for me in my later years of business. Although the idea of free range thought and seat of the pants leadership is appealing, i have come to understand that a team that shares a focus within a framework gets the job done.

I don't wish to diminish those with true knowledge and my remark is meant respectful. 'Lean' is nothing new. It is derived from the older Kai zen Principle, which basically is over 1200 years old coming from China. In Japan Kai zen stands simply for 'Making Perfect.' There are basically four steps to do so hence, the principle of Kai zen, is nothing new on itself either. It is what all reader here, has by default in the human system and DNA. It is nothing more then the principle of when you didn't succeed, you simply try again another way.

A child falls, sees people around it walk on two legs, and simply tries again until it masters stepping. Apply this simple principle in every days lives, your and mine, and there you have 'lean'. Now there is some more to it surely. The commercial bit. The Kai zen principle only works in an environment where the ground rule is that each component 'has it's place in the grand whole...' This also goes for the individual whom in the Japanese philosophy is part of the 'organization/family'. Belonging to the family takes great pride and loyalty and great sense of responsibility towards the family and it's members.

If we compare these basic principles with how we go about with 'family members' in the enterprise, one can not else conclude then that Kai zen hardly will work in the western oriented enterprises since the two major principles, in times of economic depression, simply don't exist. Cohesion and Membership. For as soon as the shareholder demands, people easily are 'let go' which is in direct conflict with the Kai zen principle. The 'belt' system also is derived from the Japanese dojo as a grade system which all together makes lean a pretty expensive questionable method that basically can be implemented with a simple E2E principle implementing ownership and responsibility for each company member as a standard.

    Lean in a nutshell.
