Honeymoon over it seems for Mourinho. He's got a big task tonight against Northampton in the EFL Cup. Funny I say this is a big task. This cup was usually used to give the youngsters some experience. I don't know where Mou is going to lead Man United. We haven't got the consistency that fans crave for and we haven't got the footballing play that United were so famous for. What's the problem? The ego? The man management skills of Mou? Strategies? Has Mou gone past his best?

This is a great case study for managerial attitudes in general no matter if it is managing a football team or a team of talented executives. Mourinho has had 14 defeats in his last 32 matches, while prior to that he had 14 defeats in 105 matches. That is some reversal of fortune. For Mourinho Manchester United was his dream job and he has taken it at a time when that club is in transition, no matter how much they have spent on players. People forget that Alex Ferguson had a torrid time when he took over the club - and he was one FA Cup defeat away from getting the sack. They won that game and 20 league titles later it is amazing to think how close he came to losing his job in the early years of his managerial career. That job comes with such a Sword of Damocles hanging on the manager. As a Spurs supporter the best scenario is that Mourinho loses the players support, the same way he did at Chelsea, gets the sack and Manchester United convince Pochettino to come to their rescue. Sir Alex Ferguson likes Pochettino in a way that did not relate to Mourinho. Then the path is set for Mourinho to become the manager of Tottenham Hotspurs - one cannot forget that Mourinho has won things, which is not the case for Pochettino, no matter how promising a manager he is.

Ok this is not Champions League opposition but Fenerbahce and Feyenoord are two of the biggest teams in their respective national leagues. I wonder how Mourinho will approach this competition. Will he focus on the Premier League or given that he has so much at his disposal go for glory in Europe too?

It's only pre-season but this kind of defeat is still chastening. United are like 'Formula 3' vs Dortmund's 'Formula 1' whose engines are already running. City next. Cannot lose in that fashion I think. The new signing, Mkhi, looked good.

Guys, I'm loving the Mourinho effect thus far. He's clearing the decks and bringing in some real quality. I hope along with Pogba he brings in Varane. I honestly think we need another centre-half alongside Bailly. Chris Smalling doesn't cut it for me. Exciting times! ;-)

@Vincent Andrew, it's been absolutely brilliant! Pogba starting tonight as well! We need a world class centre-back (I would have loved to have seen Varane) but all in all we're moving in the right direction. Mourinho has brought some much needed charisma to the club! I'm very happy! :-)

He left because he felt (at the time) he was a better player than Paul Scholes. It infuriated him when SAF brought Scholes back out of retirement. In hindsight, maybe SAF should have given him more opportunities but the past is past.

#7 Pogba will be a good buy! How did United let him go in the first place? I think United must be quick off the mark when the season starts. We usually start slowly but I'm hoping that will change. Looking at our first five fixtures, do you think we can get at least 10 points @Mark Murray?
    Mark Murray
    01/07/2016 #7 Mark Murray
He's made 2 decent signings so far, if he can get Varane and Pogba and offload 80% of the dead wood currently in the first team, the good times could return in the next couple of years. He has a big job to sort it all out but he has the expertise and the clout to improve the squad. Fingers crossed he can do it! :-)

Under Alex Ferguson, did the players come to play for him or the club? I suspect playing for one of the most successful managers in football was a motivation in itself, learning from the very best. But it could also be the brand. Man United with its history and worldwide following was a big club and still is. Good post @Nicolas Moulin.

Differing emotions with what has happened at Old Trafford over the past few days. I have the utmost respect for a person who leaves their own country and has the courage, confidence and conviction to try and apply their respective trade in another country. I know personally how difficult that process is, and it's to be respected.

Here was a man managing a team under intense scrutiny and having his stewardship undermined on a daily basis. He demonstrated strength of character throughout this whole process that can only be admired.

There is a serious lack of class with the hierarchy officiating behind the scenes at this great club. The club's owners (The Glazers) to be fair, have been financially supportive of every manager since they came to the club; however, the little tw*t they've brought in to oversee the running of the club has been nothing short of a PR disaster. It's very hard for me to speak about Ed Woodward (the Executive Vice Chairman) without cursing (a lot). He's personally embarrassed this great institution, time and again, with his ineptitude, arrogance and aloof behaviour.

I found the treatment of Van Gaal this weekend nothing short of shocking, and along with many other supporters was very embarrassed, and disappointed. Van Gaal's departure from Manchester United should been handled with the dignity and respect that he personally showed our football club. Instead, he was allowed to be publicly humiliated, by finding out he was losing his job by a BBC reporter two hours AFTER winning United's first trophy in three years.

LVG's statement says an awful lot about him. A man with class. I'll always struggle to forgive him for selling Chicharito to Bayer Leverkusen, but I salute him for his service.

    Woodward, go **** ********.
