    #2 @Pamela L. Williams, I think that's where the confusion lies. What you are describing is retargeting (btw, using any Google products is where the majority of that is coming from for you). Marketing automation is another animal. It's a software that is the hub of marketing. It's usually driven primarily by content marketing. Much like Amazon, it serves up a "people who read this also like that" and holds the customer's hand down the purchasing journey. It also serves up customized web pages based on what you've proven to be interested in. Thank you SO much for chiming in. I do share your frustrations with retargeting. I bought a high end blender (Blendtec) and I was raving about it on social media anytime someone would ask what blender their friends recommended. Of course, the result was Blendtec ads. It made me crazy as a marketer and as a consumer. Ugh!

    Kathie, I enjoyed reading your musings, I believe its a valuable addition to beBee. I have one counter to the Marketing automation; Just about everyone that I know says those marketing automations are: "Creepy". I understand where collecting purchasing choices would definitely help with decision making about sales BUT, When people are subjected to ads for stuff because they might have visited a site once by accident or on behalf of a friend, or even for themselves but realized they were on the wrong site, it is creepy and invasive. My daughter was doing research for class and accidentally went on an objectionable site. She's tried clearing history, getting rid of cookies, just stopping short of cleaning off everything on her computer and yet she continues to have ads show up on any internet page that accepts those types of ads. Quite frankly I'm ready to close my Yahoo email account because it's near useless because of all those targeted ads with long running scripts that lock it up...constantly. I don't need to see an Ad for my university Alma Mater, I've graduated. I think targeted marketing is going to create more disgruntled customers than sales it's going to attract. What really peeves me off is when I get actual junk mail in my mailbox that appears to be a direct result of something I viewed online. How did they get my address? I make a point of not using it on sites where I am not guaranteed it will not be shared and yet...there you are, someone gave it up or I wouldn't be receiving junk mail. Targeting is just a little big brother-ish in my opinion. But that's just this customer's opinion. Nuff said!

    , #1 Ali, the thing with marketing automation is it does wonders for the customer. Instead of providing them with content the marketer thinks is important to them, the consumer chooses their own experience. I wish the marketing automation industry could rebrand because so many think it's a "set it and forget it" environment. Marketing automation, in my opinion, is more human than the way marketing was done in the past.

    I agree with you @Kathie Kinde Clark. Automation saves time, but lack the human senses. People like to feel important and sense this feeling. I wonder what need automation satisfies for the customer? It is more of serving the provider than the customer.

    The danger in A/F testing is not having a statistically significant sample size. So long as you tackle that, test as many iterations as you can. I'm a huge fan of multivariate testing, but, of course you require a statistician to properly set that up.
