    #22 You are of course correct, Dean-san. Couldn't really accuse most Aussie manly men of being dapper dressers at the leading edge of this century's fashion facade. But as for your hard core 'carry your pocket around with you' gear, Dean, I can't really see me buying this new age piece of updated 'man bag' flotsam. Besides, it wouldn't match my deerstalker hat and buttoned spats. As 'old mate' Polonius sayeth, Sir Dean,
    "Costly thy habit as thy purse can buy,
    But not express'd in fancy; rich, not gaudy;
    For the apparel oft proclaims the man."
    Good quality pocketed shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt are apparel enough for this man, and neither 'fancy' nor 'gaudy'. But if you have a spare Boblbee Megalopolis lying around, Spotty would love to use it for keeping her bird seed in. 😂
    Phillip Hubbell
    04/10/2016 #23 Phillip Hubbell
    Best guess, at the bottom of a spreadsheet someplace, a financial analyst determined that they could shave a fraction of a penny off the cost, eliminated the pocket, laid off 10,000 people and everyone in finance got a bonus. But I may be cynical about that sort of internal business process.
    Dean Owen
    04/10/2016 #22 Dean Owen
    The concept of fashion is apparently lost on your continent Ken-san. Breast pockets are so 20th Century, and didn't you know even in the tropics, a short sleeve shirt is a no no! With business attire you will have to get yourself a Boblbee Megalopolis A1. Perfect with a charcoal grey flannel suit and white herringbone shirt. Designed in Sweden by the same guys that gave you tacky furniture from Ikea, they are perfect to carry your Macbook, iPhone, iPod, and a spare Herringbone Prince Charles check shirt for the evenings. And great news, they even sell them in Australia -http://www.boblbee.com.au/megalopolis/#exec

    @Ken Boddie As one who is sartorially challenged - I think the disappearance of the breast pocket is a secret campaign from those who just cannot bear to see another accountant-type with pens sticking our from the the pocket. Now where did I put my pen......

    #14 We live in a land where half of us are being threatened by bushfires and drought, while the other half are being swept away by floods. RE: "Or is this perhaps a ploy, on behalf of retailers in general, to 'persuade' we mere males to carry a 'man bag', yes that piece of irrelevant flotsam that surfaced a few years back and is generally as popular with manly males as a skunk at a barbecue?"

    OMG! I remember those monstrosities. Suits were cut so tight that pockets were useless. Heck, they were so tight that it was possible to tell a man's religion. I lost my "man-purse" several times before I gave them up.

    On shirt pockets, they are becoming a rarity. I have my suit coat pockets sewn shut so it is practically a necessity for me on those few occasions where I wear a suit.

    #8 I'd love to applaud your observation, Paul, but, would you believe it, I can't clap my hands unless I put down my iPhone. I assume that you don't carry a pen - you know, to get those annoying pieces of sandwich out of the gaps in your keyboard, or to chew on when you're thinking, or to get to that annoying itch in the middle of your back that your fingers just won't reach? 😊

    @Ken Boddie, P.S. - the first tin opener came packed in a tin. Sliced white bread was invented by a Caribbean Obea priestess as part of a ritual of chilling similarity to Voodoo. The notion of a piece of string was invented by a guy named Möbius. A Scottsman generally wears his brains beneath his kilt, or at least, that part of his psyche which he used to make decisions. Cheers!
    Phil Friedman
    02/10/2016 #9 Phil Friedman
    @Ken Boddie, the pocket is disappearing in an effort to introduce change of fashion into menswear. Manufscturers hate it that men wear business shirts until they wear out. Which could be decades. Each time something wears out, many men like me simply buy a new instance of the same old thing. I am still wearing the same make and style of shoes, jeans, shirts I did a couple of decades ago. Good and easy for me. Bad for clothing industry.
