Social Media Is a Highway, Not a DestinationIf You're On Social Media, It Should Be For a Purpose,Not as an End In ItselfJust about everyone I've met since joining the LinkedIn community has his or her own set of reasons for being part of its pretty unique milieu. For example, some come...

#19 #20 Thank you both for reading and forbthe kind words. I agree, obviously, with both your observations. From time to time, Ivsee someone talking about "being successful on social media". But I have no idea what that means, I understand using social media to help achieve success in business. And I understand using social media to help one become successful professionally. However, I just can't see what being successful at social media would be. A million likes? Ten thousand followers? Cheers!

Great article. I feel that everything was summed up in your title, "If You're On Social Media, It Should Be For a Purpose, Not as an End In Itself."
To many people close to me, have become addicted to social media not because they want to use it as a tool. Yet, each time someone likes a post of theirs, it gives them an emotional high they can no longer find in the real world. They have created their own Matrix, and are afraid to leave.
I, myself, love using Social Media. Yet, in the end it is just a tool to create relationships to help me reach my goal and allow me to help others reach theirs.

This is a great buzz @Phil Friedman Enjoyed the read. It is true when you say "LinkedIn is not so much a platform as it is a bridge", Most people expect to find answers with social media but I would say , that it is like a hint or bits & pieces of a puzzle to be put together, that we can pick up and will inturn lead us to the answers we are looking for. Thank you for the great buzz Loved it .

@Phil Friedman, this is very good advice and worth the four minute read! The way to think about social media is no different than other ways we strive to connect and engage with people. We seek out ways to express ourselves through our own original thoughts and in some cases feelings and to find places where we can contribute to what other people are saying and experiencing. "Being on social media" is not an objective.

#4 @Dean Owen - Yes, great play on the metaphor. Put the agenda in the back seat means its always there, but it doesn't drive.. Interaction, engagement, and trying as hard as possible to offer value in content should be the team drivers. Cheers!

Nice post @Phil Friedman. I enjoy the metaphor and look forward to the next. I do enjoy the genuine discussion a post can generate, that's why I am here. Perhaps I can provide some insight or inspiration via a post or comment, and in turn, I can learn something. . . A journey, indeed!

As another Christmas Season approaches, let us be thankful for the gift of life each of us has received.

Regardless of our differences, Christmas symbolizes the hope of a renewal of peace on Earth.

Our actions are what make life worth living, even if it means tolerating those who may not match our limits of understanding.

Understanding is the first step towards the goal of peaceful coexistence.

I recall a conversation with a former boss, regarding an individual’s constant taunting. His response was enlightening.

“To be such a person must be difficult in of itself. The question is not why; because there never is a rational answer. In the face of adversity, the only thing one can fall back on is to be the better man.”

Let’s all strive to be the better person in 2017.

    MERRY CHRISTMAS!

My first exposure to Moroccan was at Chez Berber, Boulevard Montparnasse. It was our first dinner as a group of exchange students and even on my very limited student budget, I made sure to go back often. But the cous cous was so tremendous, I don't ever recall having room for dessert. Now I am certain that that was likely a good thing.
