Windmills, Bicycles, Clogs and ..... Tulip and Hamster JamIt was springtime, this was our second day in the Netherlands, and here we were, soaking in a sea of tulips; subtle pastel shades alongside bold bright hues; a mirage of fragrance in a semi-rural landscape, just a short drive outside Amsterdam. #27 interesting theory, Dean-san. Perhaps more research would get to the bottom of this one and help differentiate between supposition and suppository? 😂

#26 Perhaps cleanliness of public toilets is somewhat related to the national average consumption of exotic spices?

#25 Following on from our recent exchange of bathroom humour, Kev (re the self propagating enema joke) you may wish to visit the Netherlands (beyond Schiphol), like @Dean Owen, in order to inspect "the cleanest public toilets in Europe, if not the world"? 😊

Hamster jam... giving Vegemite a run for its money. Nice travelogue Ken. My only experience in Holland is a transfer at the Amsterdam airport. We saw the tulips fields from the air, and felt like hobbits amongst all the tall, blonde Dutch people.

#23 I hope you learned one lesson while in Pisa, Claire, and that's to ensure you have an extensive site investigation performed by geotechnical engineer, prior to design and construction. 😂

#22 Maybe - my parents took me all over Europe when I was a child - even up the Leaning Tower of Pisa (my Dad had to carry me about half way up as my toddler legs got tired - so of course he gave me a fireman's lift!) I got exposed to absolutely stunning architecture and beauty. I was v. lucky!

#17 Sounds like an interesting book, Deb. Can't say I've heard the 'wet liberal' or 'pharmaphobia' concepts before. Must ask the rellies. And how about that doppelgänger portrait? Sounds scarily eerie. 👻

What a delightful post, Ken. The Netherlands must be a beautiful place to see. Thank you for the tour and now I want a pair of clogs!

Way to cover the big 4 of Dutch tourism, @Ken Boddie. One of the most memorable books I have ever read is "Amsterdam" by Russell Shorto where I learned 4 things:

    1. The Underwater situation of the landscape can be directly traced as a source of the city's famed liberalism.
    2. One of Anne Frank's contemporaries - Frieda Menco Brommet whose life was intertwined with Anne's including being in Auschwitz together for awhile - was still alive in August @ 91 years old to meet with Shorto on his trip.
    3. That the Dutch are very suspicious of pharma, even though famous for tolerance to soft street drugs.
    4. One of the most bizarre things I have ever encountered is that I have a male look-alike whose portrait in the Rijksmuseum is from 1642. Spooky likeness at a distance, for certain.

#15 No, Gert, the Scots are still the most thrifty. I used to walk to and from school because bicycles were luxury items. 😂

@Ken Boddie "Poffertjes" haven't heard that word since last my children could not stop eating it when we traveled the Netherlands. Bicycles are probably so popular because Holland is flat and peddling is easy. But I think it is more that they share the trait of thriftiness with the Scots?

#10 The Dutch have 'mols', pero el pueblo de La Mancha tiene 'molinos'. The name is bigger therefore 'el gigante' debe ser más grande en La Mancha. Perhaps El Quixote should practica en Holanda primero? 😂

This camera was a gift from my father years ago. It was his as a young man, and when I was in high school I shot more than a few rolls of 620 film.

It now is displayed on my bookshelf and still reminds me of the darkroom my dad built for me under the basement stairs.

those boots were made for walking, by Nancy Sinatra: You keep saying you got something for me
Something you call love but confess
    You've been a'messin' where you shouldn't 've been a'messin'
And now someone else is getting all your best
These boots are made for walking,
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
You keep lyin' when you oughta be truthin'
You keep losing when you oughta not bet
You keep samin' when you oughta be a'changin'
Now what's right is right but you ain't been right yet
These boots are made for walking,
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you
