Retail

+ 600 buzzes
Retail involves the sale of goods from a single point (malls, markets, department stores etc) directly to the consumer in small quantities for his end use. In a layman’s language, retailing is nothing but transaction of goods between the seller and the end user as a single unit (piece) or in small quantities to satisfy the needs of the individual and for his direct consumption.

Is Amazon To Blame For Slew of Retail Store Closures? The hero of a tale always takes center-stage, but seldom are we watching a one-person show. @Anurag Harsh I think it a little harsh to lay the blame solely at the feet of Amazon. We have been witness for decades to the arrival of big box stores such as Walmart and in Australia the likes of Bunnings ( a massive hardware chain) What we saw was the demise of the little guy whose sole trading activity simply shrivelled up and died. Ditto with Westfied whose glittering malls lure consumers into its marble and gilt halls like a siren calling from the sea. The effect, the 'High Street' with its 'community' based shopping experience simply faded away. let us not forget that the consumer always had the choice and they chose the 'big guys' whether it be for cheaper products, better service or convenience so a lot of the blame falls on us , the humble shopper. Trends are recognised by the smartest of retailers and Amazon is way ahead of the pack. Having said all that, thank you for an intriguing piece and just think, soon a drone will deliver your groceries!!

It'll be interesting to see, @Neil Hughes, how tactile the future grocery shopper will be. Will "squeezing for freshness" become a thing of the past? And will online shopping networks be able to maintain quality as consumers choose convenience over possibly taste. Should be interesting. Will foodies revolt? Will bargain hunters become the largest audience? Thanks for the post.

We're seeing something similar in the UK. Rising business taxes (rates), rising import costs and falling demand in some sectors is starting to cause a few problems. My loca mall has lost 2 retailers with big spaces in the past year and a third is "under review".

Ironic given they're building an extension!

I think it was the CEO of Next who suggested retailers would have to get used to lower turnover and smaller profits. He pointed to a trend for consumers to prefer "experiences" to spending money on owning things. His rather pithy, though accurate, tag line was "We've reached peak stuff".

    Interesting days to come, methinks!
