Often it's not about motivating, often it's about persistent demotivation. If boss isn't around for long and only shows up to criticise, or motivate without knowing the facts, it is basically telling the employee that promotions are not fair. Makes one distracted, sales isn't good or sales isn't enough.. both scenarios same output. Bosses have to have the combination, absence of body but presence of mind , knowing everything , being the dependable problem solver when the employee is in a fix . After that even if the employee gets burned he would know he deserved it.
