I know some people bristle at the word "hack." (Phil?) But, this is a great hack indeed! Last April, I never saw a message which led to the one and only time I ever missed a deadline. It's tough to keep to a deadline you didn't know existed.

@Matt 🐝 Sweetwood - Thanks for posting this. I find it sort of funny people are wishing you a happy brithday on this buzz. It does indicate how many people like to boink a button, though.

Here is something good about this birthday feature: For those of us who have a medium-size network on LinkedIn, the feature does help folks interact with their network in some way. For example, a real estate agent or an insurance salesperson could send out a personalized birthday message to someone. If the message is crafted well - and if the recipient is open to buying something - it could turn out to be a good thing.

What if you simply deleted the entry for your birthday on your profile? That should eliminate the birthday wishes coming in, right? No birthday data = no outgoing congratulations message = no incoming birthday wishes.

And I do agree, LinkedIn's "new messaging experience" continues to be rather clunky. No topic search capability, for example. The "CC" function is dangerous. I prefer using e-mail or telephone for serious communication.

I am looking forward to the new beBee features. Thanks for all the work beBee Hq staffers are doing in the background.

I get the need to promote beBee as the newcomer to the social media channel landscape, especially in the American market, but why must users be pushed to abandon LinkedIn? For those of us that have spent months building connections, fine tuning our profiles and harvesting personal endorsements...quitting LinkedIn seems extreme. And like most things extreme, difficult to undo should beBee fail to meet the hype. Why can't users just leverage each socail channel for its distinct merits and allow them to coexist? LinkedIn may have a lot of issues, birthday notices notwithstanding, but it also has longer standing advantages over beBee.
Look, I love cars, even own competing brands US and German. Still, each brand of car has unique appeals. I would never think of ridding my foreign models over domestic brands...I enjoy all of them...the reason I purchased them in the first place. I voted with my pocketbook.
Thus, I like beBee, but I also enjoy Twitter and LinkedIn and Instagram and a host of other socials. I thrive in a multi-channel ecosystem. Like to think that when I reach into my social media toolbox, I like to see variety vice one tool for all of things requiring fixin'.
Just had a birthday...well wishers swarmed my inMail inbox. Still, better than zero greetings. Thanks for sharing your fix suggestion.

@Matt 🐝 Sweetwood - I just had this same thing happen to me for my mommy blog anniversary - I ended up with hundreds of congratulations messages - that I started to respond back to - but then gave up. I'd rather people just click the like button for something like this, because when I get a message, I feel obligated to answer. :-) One of the reasons why I just wished you HB on FB.

#5 Thanks for your comment @Charlene Burke. I once at a dinner meeting and made a "toast to our mothers"... it went something like this, "I want to make a toast to our mothers; they brought us into this world, they taught very important things and I allowed us to meet such wonderful people".

Well said. No one ever reaches the top solely on their own power. They may have always been the leader with the vision, the task master ensuring that all did their work, and/or the innovator who continually challenged herself and therefore anyone on the team. Leaders and winners that get my respect will acknowledge the contributions of those who helped make it happen. And, yes, sometimes it begins with "Thank you, Mom". :)

Wonderful tips @Graham🐝 Edwards, the importance of teamwork is something that we can overlook - especially when we focus on putting importance in carving some sort of metaphorical niche for ourselves whether freelancing or in a company.

@Martin Wright Nice piece. I sold my company a few years ago and now live in Bali where I write books. I sometimes have an extraordinary amount of time on my hands which leads to that devilish pastime known as procrastination. I have had wonderful on going e mail conversations with people who want to deposit billions of dollars into my account and the like. These can go on for weeks until the scammer finally realising he has gone to hell in contacting me finally abandons all Hope. I usually report these enterprising chaps to the likes of Linked in and lately beBEE where I guess they deal with it . Anyway thank you for writing a post to have over my morning coffee

Good morning Martin. Apparently we have somehow traveled the same trails, yet somehow never entered the others orbit. I imagine we could spend hours swapping stories. Like you, I smell BS when it walks by.......at 100 paces. First I simply exposed them publicly so that others knew to beware. Then for a while I wrote articles [as you have] detailing the process, a kind of PSA [public service announcement] because the fraud was simply to prevalent and I can't be everywhere at once. Having done that to raise awareness of these 'bad actors' I found a number of kindred spirits. So we formed a loose coalition [informally of course] of community watchdogs. White Hats if you will. We communicated some behind the scenes, but by and large were quite blatant in our presence. None of us really wanted to make a full time job of it, we just wanted to clean up the neighborhood. Like the community watch programs which have become very popular in the American west. All volunteer, work at our pleasure and when we felt the need. Because the LI membership is global, it worked best when we had members from a number of countries. With a dozen or so regular users, we were on the job around the clock so it didn't take long to make a difference. Keep up the good work and I'll see you around the neighborhood.
