Great read @Pamela L. Williams You have spelled out some ground realities in today's recruitment process environment. I think technology has made them a bit lazy . They want everything on their plate with a simple 'click'. Whereas, to bring someone on board with lasting commitment is bringing someone in your life as your partner.

Thanks @Pamela L. Williams for this raw account. Resumes are so 2 dimensional and ATS screening cannot capture the third dimension and neither can a lazy pair of eyes. I have never been hired through recruiters, always by the boss. While I assume that not all recruiters are bad, I think the trend to bypass recruiters where possible is more important than ever. Great article, mind if I share?

I learned early - jobs are all temp - and a 'career' is a purely propaganda piece they sell to you to enslave you in their brand of cube farm. I work projects - create, form, launch, steer, and leave. Many of the companies in the Insurance vertical are suffering from problems I have already solved elsewhere. I am not interested in your perks, culture, or ping pong tables - I am here to fix your broken widget and get out. Nearly 30 years of doing that for too many companies to name. PS - why wait to retire ? I take a good long break nearly anytime I want.

I couldn't agree more! This needed to happen long ago. On Thursday while in the waiting room of the garage doing service on my car I had a long conversation with one of the mechanics, a young father of two, a 3 and 4 year old. He told me the 4 yr/old could already read and the younger sibling was well on her way. We started discussing education. He had tried college but loved being a mechanic but he wanted to help his children learn. He asked my advice and this is what I told him. "Reading is great, math an absolute must, even history and geography, but go out and buy some puzzles, a rubics cube, use riddles, anything that makes them have to use logic, critical thinking, non-numerical problem-solving. Set up an obstacle course with written clues on what they have to do to get through the course. Don't just tell them how to solve a problem get them to train their brains use logic skills. Then set up games where they have to work together, where the problem requires both of them, not where just one wins or loses. THAT is what the schools aren't teaching".

I told him this because in the times I have been asked to mentor someone it was the 'Logic and critical thinking' where I hit the wall. I had a interviewer tell me just last week that part of problem with those coming right out of college is their inability to 'think outside the box, they need a constructed path to follow". I don't know where the ball is being dropped, but dropped it is.

Thanks for your excellent comments, @Tony Rossi. I agree that Millennials, like their predecessors, have generally received a bad rap in the media (including social media). Blanket stereotyping of any group is usually shortsighted, wrong and filled with myths.
I chalk this up to a generational rite of passage, sort of like fraternity hazing of pledges. As this Bloomberg article states: "When they came of age in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Gen Xers were depicted as slacker-cynics who listened to grunge music and lionized Kurt Cobain." Sound somewhat familiar? http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-06-10/millennials-think-they-have-it-bad-generation-x-has-it-worse Gen X was also portrayed as lazy, carefree slackers in the Hollywood movie, "Reality Bites" -- Reality Bites, Trailer
    Tony Rossi
    15/08/2016 #12 Tony Rossi
Popular conversation likes to paint Millennials as lazy or entitled... I believe much of that misconception comes from how comfortable and quick we are to switch and shift. Rapid, repeated iteration and diminishing fear of failure are what has built the modern, digital economy. On the flipside, can that propensity get in the way of building deep, lasting relationships? The kinds that forged careers for Boomers and GenX...?

After applying to almost 50 jobs in the past month, with little positive feedback, this post has been beneficial to me. #2 Neville thank you for the white paper, this topic is really interesting for me. I also think like you in the way that leadership should be inspiring and a leader should be passionate and "let it flow" when it comes to pressure. Thank you again, keep up the buzz!
    Neville Gaunt
    22/04/2016 #2 Neville Gaunt
Hi Catalina - you are right in that there's lots of pressure etc however the great leaders if you notice rarely get stressed even with that pressure. To be a great or any type of leader you have to master one thing first and that's leading yourself. Michael Jacksons song "Man in the Mirror" is a great example to understand the concept. You make a great point about the company too, as it's a cultural thing that drives everyone's behaviour - but what is culture if not the sum of everyone's behaviour? When you have a top down do it this way culture it can and does stifle the best behaviours. I've sent you the white paper and some more info that I hope will help.
    Cat Gal U.
    22/04/2016 #1 Cat Gal U.
Hi @Neville Gaunt I think that being a leader in a company is harder than it looks, so much pressure, tasks, and even different roles which that person has to adopt, so not all leaders are great leaders even if they are leaders. Also I think that depends on the concept of the company and the specific area that a type of leader is required instead of another, also depends on what you want to get from the people he/she is leading. So much aspects to consider, but that is what it makes it interesting.

Also I wanted to comment that we're almost 11M bees. Also, the reply system is being worked on, right now it is in the first stage and nesting type of comments and replying will be coming eventually. Right now what I can explain is that if you hit reply, you don't have to tag the person. Since a number (in this way: #1, #4, #8) will appear and it's referring to the number of post the person you're replying to has, so the person will receive a notifaction. Don't worry, beBee will keep evolving and changing with our bees suggestions. again, thank you and keep buzzing!

On the 'Bad', from what I can tell, the Discover window clearly states that if you share your email contact list with beBee, invitations to join the site will be sent. Other networking sites have similar features and I never click on any auto-fill button. So, you found beBee through Wikipedia? You have some good suggestions. I would like to see more features available on the profile page; being a visual artist, I would like to have the ability to post images of my work on my profile. I would also like to see larger profile pics on the main buzz wall when someone shares a buzz. It is good to have you as part of the community.

Nice review @Jahanara Hoque. I think beBee is up to 10.5 million now, in just over a year. Pretty impressive. On the emailing of everyone in your contact list, if I recall there was a click box somewhere along the sign up process, so it did not happen with me, although now I am familiar with beBee, I would happily invite all my contacts to join (where is that click box again?). I totally get the sense of community you feel, and I loved your line "I feel like a hipster that discovered something cool before everyone else".
