Job Description

Fortitude Re’s Internal Audit Director (IAD) provides independent and objective assurance, advice, and insight guided by a philosophy of adding value to improve the operations of Fortitude Re. IAD assists Fortitude Re in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic and disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of Fortitude Re’s control environment including risk management, operational, financial, internal control, and governance processes.

As Internal Audit Director you will be part of Fortitude Re’s audit team in the Nashville, TN office. You will collaborate with Fortitude Re stakeholders, AIG, External Audits and third-party service providers to:

- Lead the development of a portfolio of audits to ensure that audit projects and stakeholders focus on key risks and controls
- Partner with the business to identify and analyze the inherent risks and the controls that management has implemented to mitigate their risks
- Educate stakeholders on the internal audit process and work to improve the overall audit experience
- Contribute to the overall effectiveness and value of internal audit by recommending and developing innovative approaches and solutions (e.g. the use of data analytics, automation, and Agile audit methodology)

Fortitude Re is seeking a highly engaged and experienced audit professional with insurance or financial services industry experience and strong technical and interpersonal competencies and people management skills. The successful candidate will be a key contributor to the achievement of the Fortitude Re’s strategic goals. We are looking for candidates that are proactive, continuous learners and open to improved ways of doing things, both with business stakeholders in the development of solutions to problems, internal audit processes and the use of data analytics.

You will gain a unique view of Fortitude Re, as part of planning and executing on all aspects of the audit process and risk assessment activities and will build close working relationships with business and functional leaders.

Specific Responsibilities

- Assist senior management in the development and execution of a risk-based audit plan and lead the full audit lifecycle (planning, testing of controls, and issue verification) for audit engagements covering the Finance department
- Effectively manage a team of audit professionals primarily in a managed service environment to execute all aspects of audit activities in accordance with Internal Audit and professional standards ensuring audit projects are delivered on time
- Coordinate and manage the execution of the audit plan which includes risk and control evaluation, testing, audit report issuance, workpaper review, and follow-up and verification of issue closure
- Clearly and concisely communicate audit results or other key messages to a variety of constituents, including senior business and audit management, and regulators, and advise on emerging industry or regulatory topics/issues that may impact audit coverage
- Continuously update the business risk and control environment assessments, including key risks and controls, through periodic client meetings, ad-hoc walk throughs, monitoring of key business metrics and data analytics
- Interact with regulators for regulatory examinations, status updates and other queries, as needed
- Some travel may be required


- 10 years minimum of relevant Finance industry or audit experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree
- A certified professional designation (e.g., CPA, CIA, CISA, CRISC, CISSP) is expected or must be obtained within the first 12 months of hire date
- CPA designation required
- Knowledge of or experience with financial statement analysis, budgeting and forecasting processes, GAAP and more complex accounting topics capital adequacy, stress testing, collateral, and cash management
- Familiarity with applicable industry laws and regulations
- Supervisory / managerial experience, with strong people management skills to coach, motivate and lead a team of senior professionals
- Ability to develop successful coalitions within IAD and stakeholders by actively seeking the perspectives of others, focused listening, and sharing information and ideas
