Finding Ways to Make an Impact
Overcoming fear can be a big part of finding success as an entrepreneur. And strategies that help people to do that don't just enhance business triumphs, they also are ways to make life in general a lot more enjoyable.
What holds people back? Often, it's a combination of factors. These can include a lack of self-confidence, compare and despair and an inadequate support system. The good news is all of these obstacles can be overcome. The key is in how the experience is framed. People can't control how they feel. Feelings are natural, and have a beginning, middle and end. However, they can control the way they utilize their feelings.
Confidence is key in the business world, and daily anxiety about each decision is a bad sign. While sometimes nervousness is normal, it is important to understand and internalize that this is the case. Arguably, big decisions should always come with some self-doubt. While it's important to make educated decisions, some decisions will be imperfect. That's true no matter how long someone ruminates on a decision. This is also acceptable, and more opportunities will follow. No one should let uncertainty hold them back.
Comparisons can be another trap. It's not helpful for a newbie to compare him or herself to legends like Steve Jobs. In fact, trying to follow in someone else's footsteps or beat their records can lead to failure. Consider the example of Elizabeth Holmes. Entrepreneurs should be themselves, and if an entrepreneur won't be him or herself, investors should be comfortable asking why.
Finally, no entrepreneur should be trying to go it totally alone. Take the example of Jobs once again. Though he looms large over the Apple story, he wasn't alone. There was also a Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Success stories are written by teams and new entrepreneurs should seek out support and surround themselves with good people.
It's also important to remember that sometimes feeling fear is normal. Starting a new business is a stressful process for anyone. Entrepreneurship is something that releases a lot of adrenaline. That means sometimes it will feel great and focused, like being in the zone. Sometimes it can feel isolated and stressed while both of those feelings are normal. Success never comes easy, but keeping these thoughts in mind might just make it come easier.
