We need to be authentic. We need to preserve our originality. This is in spite of the rapid disruptions we encounter that change our lifestyles, our communication, our grasp of a topic of interest to be overwhelmed soon by a new interest and so many other facets of life. Technology is changing the way we socialize, the way we do business, the way we learn and the way we monitor work progress, just to give few examples. We find ourselves standing on sinking sands and above us turbulent winds that blows the sand in our eyes and we hardly can see through the blowing dust. And yet we have to keep our balance and stay who we are.

With so many connections we feel the world is shrinking into a small world. I received a letter from Bas de Baar in Holland years ago. Bas asked me if I would review his draft book on management. I accepted and he forwarded the draft to me. I made a small suggestion for him. That small thing resulted in his decision to rewrite the book and to offer me to be the co-author of the new book. I accepted. My suggestion was to use the fish pond metaphor. The shrinking world is like fish living in the spacious ocean that we moved into a small pond. The book reviewed the new challenges the fish would face such as contamination. Algae in the ocean aren’t like algae in a pond and they could kill the fish in the pond. What started as a small idea resulted in a book that still we haven’t published yet.

The introduction of the book has the following to say:

Why A Fish Pond?

The Fish Pond Metaphor is not one coherent picture of a particular pond. It is merely a collection of narratives and analogies centered on a common theme, the fish pond. We choose the Fish Pond for more than one reason, but mainly because it is an ecosystem. An ecosystem let us describe our main problem with reality called “dynamic complexity”. In our normal line of thinking, we think about an event A that happens, and that causes something else, say B. The occurrence of B might trigger some event C. A nice linear cause-and-effect chain.

With dynamic complexity this is exactly what is not taking place: cause and effect are not close in space and time, and therefore, very difficult for us to see.

Extracts of Few Main Ideas of the e-Book

Best practices become worst practices under changing environments. We give examples in the book to explain this point. And yet we have many people calling for adopting fixed best practices. Best is only valid for linear systems. In fact we then concluded “Practices perceived as best practices become worst practices under changing environments”. The best becomes worst, but the worst doesn’t become the best. This is another example of one-directional movement.

Basically, reality is too complex for us to comprehend. And in a real fish pond dozens of these processes are taking place all at the same time. The complexity is such that as soon so a small change happens and causes a butterfly effect another small cause leads to another butterfly effect. I call this the acceleration of the butterfly effect.

The work environment and its relationship to the fish pond metaphor reveals the importance of building trust in organizations. This is an example of a specific narrative surrounding the Fish Pond metaphor. It makes the analogy between the filtering and drainage of a pond, and the need for trust and elimination of toxic employees in a project. Muddy water can create problems for fish trying to feed themselves and affect their size. Is it any different for muddy organizations? My answer is no. Muddy organizations lack trust and they shall affect the growth of employees.

People around you influence your mental construct- I could replace Wikipedia with beBee had beBee existed during the time we wrote the book. The Fish Pond book highlights the concept of social capital as being the central available element that expresses the effectiveness of resilience and adaption within a social system. Although there are a many definitions going around for this concept, like on Wikipedia, it provides the notion that a higher value shows better access to other people, to either share, exchange or in another form influence shared constructs.

The People afomnd
You nfluena our
Mamtal couSvuets,

Just looking at employees or fish can already have an impact on behavior. Again the similarities are striking. The fish pond revealed the strength of the Observant Effect and how small observation of somebody might cause significant changes of his/her behavior.

The Fish Pond Metaphor is a valid one. Its dynamism may help us understand the complexity of management. The book offers examples of many more observations from the fish pond. I defer these to a future buzz.

It amazes me how an e-mail resulted in huge changes in my life and to co-author a book with Bas with whom I have never met. Our world is changing and we need to keep our authenticity. A mi the same person? I don’t know.

For some reason this got my on a Heraclitus kick this morning. “The Only Thing That Is Constant Is Change.” “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” A series of inputs and outputs, stimuli and experiences, interactions and exchanges that influence perspective along a constantly evolving and dynamic journey.. I like your insights as it causes one to actually think. Cant wait to see the book. Thanks....

You know always what you want Joyce 🐝 Bowen Brand Ambassador @ beBee. You have a clear mind even though you may think otherwise sometimes. I thank you for being always so honest in your comments.
"We find ourselves standing on sinking sands and above us turbulent winds that blows the sand in our eyes and we hardly can see through the blowing dust. And yet we have to keep our balance and stay who we are." I like the metaphor of the fish pond. I struggle to stray from linear thinking. The world and its facets are inherently nonlinear. You have a way of putting things (as with the above statement) that helps clear the mind.

i agree and appreciate your comment Yolanda Ávila Márquez. When we visit a park and find it polluted with left overs who is responsible for that? When we crowd fish in a pool with no drainage who is faulty? Yes the fish may contribute to the problem, but mostly it is us. Thst is another reason why I believe the fish pond example is applicable.

I understand your concerns Antoinette Capasso-Backdahl. The whole idea is thar we observe a fish pond to learn and adapt. If a fish pond gets stingy then why also some organizations are called fishy? Iin no way I am equating a human with a fish. The whole idea is what happens when we crowd fish in a pond. The idea came from our world that is shrinking into a small village. What does crowdiness lead to?

Brilliant response. It is in the integrity of the whole that we find our integrity. If I am correct dear Sara Jacobovici it is because of your comment.

I am grateful for the synchronicity between us Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee. I will answer your last question first; "In a inter-connected world does identity have a meaning?": definitely yes. This is the key to the human paradox of our drive to form our own unique identity while dependent on the interconnection for survival. You raise important questions Dr. Ali. The factor of time is crucial. You describe an organic, biological inter-connectedness. This process takes time to manifest into an identity of the individual part of the whole system. What is happening in our current environment of technology is the lack of time we have to adapt and establish any form of connection. We are in a disconnect and so is our identity.

Ali Anani

I can't believe this synchronicity between us. I have just prior to read written a comment to myself. It says if we are so co-dependent on each other and on other living systems then what is identity? Is is an isolated I? Humans need yeast to digest their food and have microbes in their body to help digestion. Plants need animals, wind, water and air to disperse their seeds to give new plants. We rely on plants for our food and so we are dependent on wind, air and other elements for food. Then what is Identity? In a inter-connected world does identity have a meaning dear Sara Jacobovici?

After reading this buzz and the comments, I needed to come up for air Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee. This is core life material. More questions than answers, but in a way that's good and definitely appreciate your use of metaphors and analogies and your focus on an ecosystem. I have woven this thread throughout my writing; it's all about identity and it's all about communication. The process is the communication of who "I" is in our identity. We establish ourselves in the world through communication. We declare: “Here I am!”, from the first breath we take at birth. We proudly proclaim our being with the sound of our voice, our cry. Think of everything that has happened between then and today as we navigate on social media and read how to create our personal brand. You mention the need to be authentic. Well, we're told to be authentic. But in what context? So here I come back, full-circle to the "I" in identity. By focusing on an ecosystem Dr. Ali, you are looking at that context.

The growing laziness trend seems to be universal. I have an employee who when at home she messages her mother to bring her a glass of water to her bed. You do raise a new tendency Lisa 🐝 Gallagher. Making life so comfortable is bringing laziness along with it. With laziness comes the wrong choice of communication channels. This is a very interesting idea and I wonder if it has been studied and to what degree its validity is.

Congratulations on Co-Authoring the book Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee. I like the fish pond analogy. It reminds me of my last job... the water was so muddy, it's as if it clung to you and weighed you down. I left because of the toxic environment, not because of the work I did. I enjoyed what I did. For some reason another thing came to mind when it comes to things getting smaller... the way we communicate. My sister in law was visiting my home last week, she and my mother in law flew in from Arizona. I was in my kitchen and at 2:30 pm I was receiving texts. My sister in law was actually texting me from her bedroom in my upstairs. I was blown away that she couldn't take the time to come down and chat along with asking me the silly questions she was texting me. I ignored the texts because it was so impersonal and quite lazy. It actually angered me. More people text rather than call and have human to human contact via the phone. I don't like it. Simple questions via texting, that's fine.. a full conversation, call me!

dear Harvey Lloyd- your comment is outstanding. Even though we kept two chapters out that addressed some of the issues that you mentioned. One particular point that deserves close attention is "The symbiotic relationship of survival is now broken". This is an extremely valuable point. When ants hook to each other in seas to make a raft they do this for survival. Every ant is aware that it should it leave the raft will sink. This way the raft is safe and keeps the ants safe. It is a forced symbiosis relationship. No matter what survival for all living species has a top priority. Some nations unite just to survive. Once the danger is removed problems start to surface out. You are very correct and your comment is truly a gem.

you are a very wise lady . Every point you raise in your subtle comment merits a buzz on its own. You are very sharp. In the book we did discuss some of the issues that you raise. In fact we did link the fish pond to OODA Loop. This stands for Observe, Orient, Decide and Act. Within this context we discussed some of the issues that you raised. Much grateful to you and your solid comment. We need to ob*rve constantly for all possible chsnges in the pool such as reduction of water level. You should have co-authored the book as well.

you have great points Randall Burns. The shrinkage of the world is represented by the shrinkage of an ocean to a pond. This signals this could be on the expense of free flow. We touched upon some of your ideas in the book. If you are interested I may send you a copy of the book. The pool is exposed to many detrimental factors. If we extend our imagination we may visualize throwing a shark in it or contaminating it with a poison. As we vary the types of fish in it we expect new kinds of conflicts. If we limit the resources how would the fish behave? As your comments shows brilliantly we may view the fish as a ststic metaphor or a dynamic one. In the book we highlighted its dynamism.

Very interesting read @Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee, it is a fascinating concept and I understand the analogy, (at least I think I do, maybe I'm missing something basic here), but my perception differs. I see a "fish pond" as stagnant, still, low energy with limited opportunity for change and growth. I perceive the the "linear flow" that you speak of as a river, the environment constantly changing whilst the immediate congregation of my personal "school of fish", (personal contacts, work associates, employees, etc.), are localized in a pool within the river. This allows energy to constantly flow through refreshing non stop. There is always change; change in structure, in people, in goals, adapting to fluctuating environment. People will come and go from the "pool" as conditions dictate, including ourselves. This perception could be due to the volatile nature of the kitchen which is in a constant flux, it is high energy and we learn to be light on our feet and adapt to the constant change. It could be said that in our business the only constant is change. It makes managing and leading in this environment both challenging and rewarding, it's never a dull moment. Great post. Thought provoking.

John Rylance

#8 yes ideas are flowing, fish ponds are not only homes for fish, but also aquatic insects like water boatmen, and pond skaters (aka water striders/bugs or water skippers) all of which have a part to play in the ecology of the pool, and maybe your fish pond metaphor.

Harvey Lloyd

منذ 6 سنوات #9

The metaphor of the pond is a good one to discuss the realms of management and ultimately leadership. The metaphor though at some point must translate into change. The pond level of thinking is a great challenge when considering change. We could bring the metaphor to the species of fish that we most join, but then we become part of the problem, an us and them thing. We can join a non associated species but then we look odd within the metaphor. So what change can we impact within the "Pond Domain" We are all pond dwellers. Or simply put we are all human. Certainly we have different aspirations, challenges and narratives, but fundamentally we all seek two very basic things, survival, peace and joy. Within this framework we can note that i can only survive if you do. Creating a symbiotic relationship that insures the ecosystem of the pond survives for my offspring. The challenge for managers these days is assumptions. There was a day when we assumed that everyone shared some common basic principles within the workforce. These no longer exist. So management within their assumptions find themselves bewildered at the incongruent effort within the team. WIth investigation we begin to sense that several goals unrelated to the team goals are also being served. The symbiotic relationship of survival is now broken. Management these days is a challenging aspect of growth. You may be able to develop a core group but the edge of success will always be lined with competing team agendas.

We have many more examples in the book, but not this one John Rylance. This is a great one and surely adds to the dynamism of the metaphor. What if water freezes and forms a "pond iceberg"? New ideas are flowing in my mind.

John Rylance

Another thread of the fish pond metaphor is it freezing from the surface downwards. Could this be the managers protecting the employees at difficult times due to outside pressures? Being careful not to over protect and stifle the workers.
