Branching Interests

I was looking at the image below when so many ideas started colliding in my mind. Why some people grow up vertically and do the same thing all their lives like a stem of tree without any branching. Why some people branch out? I am not referring only to work, but also to other aspects of life. Some people don't care to learn other languages and others care to know a bundle of them. Is it better to be a gun with one eye, or one with many eyes?

If we study the lives of achievers we find that they kept doing same job for a while. Then they became overwhelmed with the realization that they were not doing what they had passion for. They decided to branch out to other areas. A medical doctor turns into a novelist. A carpenter becomes a famous actor. A wealthy man such as Carnegie donating most of his money to his community and, in return, the community favors his business to make him richer without intending it.

We are limited by our fears and negative mindsets. We allow fear to have a grip on us and thus keep us going in one direction. There are the few who realize that doing the same job isn't their growth path. They realize their dreams before realizing them. They are willing to sacrifice their comfort for the challenge and uncertainty to explore and find out more. The chasm between what they love doing and what they doing is is a great motivator for them. These people felt left out sometimes, but this feeling pushed them to make the jump. I believe those people followed simple rules that led to their success.

1. Do what your heart loves

2. Learn and get inspired by others

3. Act on what you love doing

4. Accepting the detour on a complex path

Who is willing to invest his life in doing that are foreign to his/her heart? I believe these four rules apply to all people. It is the difference in what our heart love that successful people differ in. The starting point is different, but the rules apply. It is adherence to simple rules that lead us to take same trajectories in life and what a waste it could be doing spending a life span doing what we hate. This way we end up living in a conflicts between what we are passionate for and what we keep on doing. The tree trunk bifurcates too early and only to give a poor and ill trees.

We need some disruptive events in our lives to change. I recall a lady asking me:

- So you smoke?

-Yes, I do

- You know smoking is harmful for you?

- Yes, I do

- So how could be a manager if you can't take good decisions for yourself before you may take them for your staff?

This discussion changed my life. We need sometimes a shock to disrupt us and awaken us to the right path. We tend to change paths as we grow older for varieties of reasons. This way we may branch out as we grow older. No matter what we should always branch into areas we have passion for with the objective to help others and not ourselves. Ego passion limits us and limits our growth.

While writing this buzz Donna-Luisa Eversley wrote a buzz "climbing-the-knowledge-wall". The first line of the buzz reads "We are limited only by what we 'choose not to know'. How fitting this eloquent line with this buzz is unbelievable.

#40 Interestingly Harvey has the river as being apart from the person/tree. I saw it as the branching and river/sap as being within the person. This highlights that one person's vision isn't the one someone else envisages. Both have value and the difference is whether the changes are internal or external. The answer is I suggest either or a mixture of both.

#35 “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and he's not the same man.” ― Heraclitus This was the quote i was thinking of when reading and responding to changes in our path. We reach the rivers edge each time a new person so we cross differently and with new wisdom. I may branch out, but each time i start to branch i am not the same person i was last time. Seems to be two schools of thought in branching. Forcing a branch in answer to required change, or branching as a natural process of growing wisdom. I have often seen folks who change because they are running from something, forced branch. The most successful seem to branch naturally as the tree height presents new opportunities, they are not leaving something but rather going somewhere. Two totally different mindsets. True Harvey, when younger our paths are often steep inclines that we attempt either by climbing straight up or going a circular route. When we get older we tend to opt for paths on the flat or with slight inclines. Also there is less of a rush when venturing on them in later life#8

I'm trying to remind myself of how many times I've branched out over the years and when I remind myself, I feel accomplished. Sometimes we go through things that seem so permanent but they are just temporary set backs. I get bored easily which has made me continually seek out new places, learn new things and try to keep an open mind. When we stop learning, we stop living.

Upon the conclusion of the interview the interviewer told the candidate"you don't have twenty years of experience. You have been doing the same thing for twenty years".

Your comment is so succinct and it is difficult to "prune" any part of it CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit. I paused on this "There is no such thing as a wasted life when we are all wasted". Human nature is wasting and abiding by entropy. Somebody said the biggest source of energy is wasted energy. I feel like saying the biggest source of life is wasted life.

I love your combined metaphor and how you linked the tree and river metaphors together John Rylance. I am still wondering how I could build on your metaphor and your lovely explanation of it. More, I am thinking loudly on how to expand the idea of combined metaphors as you did. I believe this is an area that merits our extreme attention.

If you are doing well but unhappy in the income you generate you may dream of rolling in your passion. But each day we must earn our daily bread for ourselves and our loved ones. Sometimes we love things only after experiencing them. But the indecision results in Points of reference become borders of relevance. Retrospectively we may try to look in the past for meaning and prospectively to the future for purpose, but we are beings with countless dimensions reduced to utility for assessment. The achievers assess for an actionable decision while the rest get tied up in restrictive assessments of society or their own understanding. The recursive conditioning of restricting the assessment too makes us look at ourselves as rooted or branched but not as a tree. Sometimes we experience things because we love them. But love needs depth, the same act which we perhaps do daily , perhaps in the same manner with the same thought process, yet the outcome is different with each experience. But love may breed the desire of continuous progress, we restrict our love into an upward graph within a small activity, points of reference become borders of relevance... we reject our abilities based on odd and rare failures. Ultimately if we see ourselves as endless possibilities and success and failures as milestones in an experience which is much larger we effortlessly branch out, root in , grow wings, harvest the wind, enjoy the sun and also charm the darkness to be our friend. We are a part of everything and growing straight or branching out ... we have to accept everything and chose the path of progress within that acceptance. I somehow feel that this is best buzz to get introduced to your writing and when i read the rest of them again, they yield more depth. Perhaps i love your writing :)

We do not have a society of branching interests, we have a society of pruning interests. What is personal branding but a pruning so we have a certain look. If Javier says Manjit this is what beBee is, then that too is pruning and not branching. There is no wrong or right in this, it is simply the way of the gardener or as Voltaire ends in his hilarious book Candide "but let us cultivate our garden". My branch seeks the Tree of Life and I don't want pruners coming in and asking me where is this going? How do I know where it is going, for this is emergent? Yet we don't live in this kind of society. We live in a society where the focal point is on achievement and ambition, that we must make of ourselves into something and that is cultivating one's garden and the very punch line in the satire of Candide. There is no such thing as a wasted life when we are all wasted. Waste is the actual natural part of life, the unusual part of life is that something lives for a moment, but it inevitably as a life cycle of beginning and end. We cannot do anything to nature that nature cannot do to us, but we are society of constant pruning. The moment we demand or envisage success, we command pruning. Little do we know that our collective pruning may serve as the basis of a war. Just because we don't own that material factor, does not mean that it is not in play when we pump gas, or use some form of fuel that powers the circuits of civilization. The Tree of Knowledge is what remains important and those branches are very different, what fruits it has represents a tiny fraction of our ambition. The Tree of Life - now that is appreciating the people to come and the people who have gone, but maybe the only branching interest we may have is actually knowledge, and my own branches are not a Tree of Life either.

Ali andHarvey I would like to combine your two metaphors. Firstly the tree grows outwards from its trunk. The river grows from the tributaries that flow into it. During the Spring and Summer the tree grows outwards collecting in your terms Ali information, come the Autumn and Winter the sap like a stream returns to the trunk with its new found knowledge. Where it strengthens the tree while it rests ready for the next year. Like us the tree grows by building on the sustinence it has gathered. I hope unlike me the metaphors are not too mixed up.

If I had the time to portray a developmental timeline of your discussion Ali Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee, it would start with a time when a group of people called "artists" who followed their passion and were expected to sacrifice material comforts and a group called "providers" who followed their sense of obligation and were expected to sacrifice their passions. Within each decade, different groups, with different names have come and gone but the issues have remained the same. For me the issue is one of identity. Do we define ourselves according to external expectations or develop a core sense of who we are and adapt rather than sacrifice that core to meet the external demands. I was lucky to witness both my parents channel the passions of their core identity into whatever life threw at them. If I look at it from the tree metaphor, maybe we need to root ourselves in that internal core and then branch out, rather than either react to the environment in which we find ourselves or have difficulty in choosing that ground in which to establish those roots.
