Businesses Driving to Success

Businesses Driving to Success

I have shown the analogy between driving cars and driving businesses. The presentation highlighted the role of the driver in driving safely to the intended destination. However; the role of the vehicle and passengers was not discusses. This post shown the forgotten facts that business drivers may overlook.

Humans and cars share one thing- only one part touches the ground. When we walk or run it is our feet that are touching the ground. In cars it is the tires. Our feet and the tires are on the ground and they both need special attention. The synchronization between the steering and wheels is crucial to safe driving. Strangely enough, we care about our shoes whether it is comfortable, sized well, branded, appropriate and of matching color. We replace them before they are torn out. In cars, we fail to do the same. We change tires only if terribly torn out or punctured to the extent that they have to be replaced. I may claim that we also tend to drive businesses on torn out tires.

It makes me wonder why we care for shoes more than tires. A manager cares about his shoes being of the last fashion, clean, matching to his suit and don't pay attention to the tires. Why managers insist on driving businesses on worn and unsuitable tires? Is this the way to drive a business?

Like driving cars on different terrains and climates we drive business on changing terrains and climates. We have pebbles sticking to the tires, nails the roads that may puncture the tires, rain that makes the tires slippery, heat that may inflate the tires and make them liable to exploding. I experienced this recently when traveling. We were four in a car taking us to a very important meeting. It was a very hot day and all of a sudden one tire exploded. The smell of smoke was terrible and the dust around us made it hard to breathe. Sitting in the car was impossible because of the smell of the exploded tire. Staying outside was difficult because of the sand storm. It was an experience in which spoiled tires may drive a business to predicaments. We were late to the meeting. Our clothes were dirty adding to the troubles we faced.

A business leader knows on which land he/she is driving the business. If on rocky roads the leader opts for tires that are flexible enough to conform to irregular surfaces and with biting edges to adhere to the rocks. The tires shall have a flexible rubbery component to have a better grip. It is not the tires which determine the road; it is the road which determines which tires to use.

It is always advisable to change tires in pairs at minimum. Leaders should think about what changes they need to make in pairs to keep the balance and drive the organization to success. Replacing one tire with a different model, size or tread depth can cause a noticeable pull in the steering wheel or other handling issues. The leader shall lose the ability to steer the organization safely.

True leader cares for the knowing the ground on which to drive the business so as to have a grip on the rocky and slippery roads ahead. They choose the right people who have:

· the correct" inflation",

· material, structure and characteristics which fit with the road ahead,

· The adaptability to changing conditions, and

· Characteristics to get ahead without "burning out" or torn out or exploding

We can't drive a business to success on faulty tires. It is as simple as that.

Beautiful and new perspective William King. You are absolutely correct. Emotions are never to the tires; rather for the driver and passengers. I love your expansion and i am sure readers shall find it worthy

I know this cluster of Sara Jacobovici and I can see a new model of thinking is emerging. No matter at what station I leave the bus, I know that Sara will be available with her great insights.

Believe me Anees Zaidi you can do it. I assure you it shall be a masterpiece. I am not inflating a punctured balloon; rather I am promoting and trusting a mind that is filled with oxygen, flowers and bees buzzing all telling you the buzz shall continue till you finish writing this post. I shall not be surprised if i read it later tonight. Your mind is like a garden- and you shall pick the flowers tonight.

Thank you Ali Anani for bringing @Qamar Ali Khan's comment to my attention. I love the journey/process within the metaphor of the bus as a business. If I may add the opportunity for expanding the services and allowing the passengers to get off and board at different stations, this may provide more "diversity in services". Just a thought.

That you are one of my great "discoveries" Anees Zaidi. Your comment and combined with other comments push me to explore in more depth developing two strategies.. The first one is on "Driving-Based" strategy. The second one on "The "bee-flower" metaphor-based strategies.May be a third one based on what you wrote below "' Interesting in this case the 'driver' and the 'driven' are the same entity. And curiously enough 'watchdog' is also no different from the 'driver' and the 'driven'. I really need to ponder on your comment before expressing my deepest appreciation of it. It got my mind busy like a red bee.

This is a brilliant comment dear Qamar Ali Khan shall thrive on your comment. I think if we merge this post with that of Sara and the comments here we then have "The beBee Strategy Model". How about initiating this project Javier?

Ali Anani! A business is like a vehicle, not used for domestic purposes, but as a public service mean. Passengers are the customers. The driver is the top management and the vehicle has it's repair and maintenance staff, the employees. The body of the car is the organizational structure. The objective and purpose of the vehicle is to get the passengers to their desired destination, i.e. to provide the required goods or services that make the customers satisfied and happy. The owner of the vehicle is responsible to maintain the vehicle in good shape so that the passengers face no problem with the Journey. The staff of the vehicle charges fare in return to get the passengers to their desired destinations. Similarly, the business charge the customers in return of providing goods and services in the most convenient way. If the vehicle is in superb and most comfortable condition, and provide sharp timely service, the passengers will prefer it over others. If the condition of the vehicle is extra-ordinary excellent and it's staff is highly cooperative and kind to the passengers, the passengers will be ready to have a seat in the vehicle even paying premium price. Same is applicable to other business organizations. So, with worn-out tires, the vehicle is not only a dangerous transportation to travel on, but it's very inconvenient to the passengers as well.

Sara Jacobovici respond first. For now, you shall never stop amazing me with your comprehension Sara. The tires are pat of a system. Howvever; this part has been left out in many plans. Yes, the value of the tires increases if part of synchronization.

Wonderfully articulated buzz Ali Anani! It's absolutely true that tires are something that receive the least attention. As you said, they are replaced when they become completely useless. Driving on old and worn-out tires can result fatal consequences sometime. The vehicle can face a horrible accident that may cause the loss of precious lives, keeping aside the complete destruction of the vehicle itself. You have beautifully explained what a tire means to an organization. In my own opinion, strategic determinations and decisions work as tires to the organizational vehicle. Thank you Dear Ali for such a superb buzz!

Ali Anani. Gentlemen, may I add by saying that we can not minimize or neglect the process involved. In other words, we can break down the business into its components; best designers, engineers, mechanics, materials, drivers and even passengers/navigators, yet who are those who "assemble" these cars? The people on the assembly line (even if they operate the robots that assemble the cars), these people are crucial to the potential of the success of the business; what direction the business takes is not always in the GPS of the car, it begins with the team and the environment in which the GPS was installed. Thank you for the opportunity to take part in this discussion.

fully agreed. Tyres are the main part of it !!!!

I agree Javier Cámara Rica fully, but again wish to emphasize that the tires are the only part that touches the road. I wonder with the new trend of having driverless cars how things and perspectives would change. That is an off-shoot that I believe is of value.

tyres, engineers , pilot, co-pilot, car, road, curves, speed, garage, petrol, tank,,, so many things can influence !!! But I agree, tyres in a good shape are a must. If you like Formula One, a good pilot with a right car without right tyres can not succeed !!!

Javier Cámara Rica- great and you are expanding the scope of the metaphor. I always say the problem id finding the problem. We need people who are excellent in probing the problem and identifying its root causes. The problem here is that even though the tires have a great role they are more often than not ignored. Great leaders define the problem and "engineer" its solution. Now, with your great insights dear Javier we may write a book. Keep your great inspirations.

Javier Cámara Rica- this is a perfect analogy and adds much to this buzz and my original presentation on driving businesses. I wonder if beBee awould apply it for I find your comment very relevant and you have the mindset for that. Honey of this quality comes only from a golden bee.

It is important to have everything to succeed: the pilot (very important the team), the car ( your product or service need to add value ), and the petrol ( money or funds for starting, speeding up and getting to the finish line ) ! Sometimes you don't have a great car or a smart pilot or your tank is empty.

I appreciate your feedback Javier Cámara Rica and I am glad the buzz resonates with you. yes, we care for the car, but forget it is the synchronization between the steering and tires that determine the driving quality of a car. So, are businesses.
