Cheating that is not

Cheating that is not

It amazes me how structures replicate in nature. Is this a coincidence or luck by chance (serendipity)? Or, more is it a form of legal cheating? Let me explain by example.

If I ask the reader this question- is there a relationship or connection between bees honeycomb structure and our bone structure, or flying birds bone structure? What would be the answer? We know that bones and bees don't talk to each other, don't communicate and how on earth would they have any commonality?

It turns out that there are similarities. All flying birds have a honeycomb-like bone structure to make them as light as possible. Bees use the least amount of materials in constructing honeycomb structure. Birds may flight easier with bones of honey comb structure. This structure, even though light, it gives birth added strength to continue on with their flying.

Still more surprising is the structure of high plants. Bamboo, for example, grows very fast and needs to save material as much as possible to grow high and not fall under because of its heavy weight. It turns out that bamboo has similar structure to bones with fractal tube-like structure. If we compare our bone structure and the bamboo "be" structure they turn out to be strikingly similar.

The same honeycomb-like structure extends to the eyes of cockroaches. These creatures have compound eyes (honeycomb-like light sensors). Again, the honeycomb structure appears in the eyes of cockroaches. Are cockroaches stealing or cheating the honeycomb structure from bamboos or bees?

The advancement of technology has allowed researches to probe into domains that were unimaginable years ago. For example, the use of colored scanning electron micrograph of empty fat cells in our bodies has revealed that these cells too have a honeycomb structure. Normal lipid (fat) deposits of the cells were removed and this approach revealed the honeycomb structure of the cell membranes. We humans too have honeycomb structures in our bodies.

Honeycomb structures reveal more than that. The concept of honeycomb structures extends into different domains. Is there a hidden force that allows this legal cheating of the honeycomb structure and copying it? What would you call it?

Are their secretive forms of silent communication? Is this the hidden power? May be your comments guide me in finding an answer.

Sorry for the belated reply, Ali Anani. Topics like these intrigue me the most. As you said, the concept of honeycomb structures extends into different domains. The latest find in astronomy shows that universe has a structure which resembles a honeycomb - superclusters of galaxies linked together in a cosmic web. In one of your comments you asked how cockroaches, human cell membranes, bees or even bamboo plant determine that the honeycomb structure is ideal for their growth. We could ask a similar question about universe and the “forces” that attract galaxies into honeycomb pattern. Does the pattern simply represent the nature’s tendency to create the efficient hexagonal close-packing structures, such as a honeycomb? Is this “propensity” embedded into the very laws of nature? Some questions are simply unanswerable.

Great and challenging questions Aaron Skogen. Yu open my mind to thousand of more questions. The key question is can an imitator be a creator? The first one was not surely an imitator? More puzzling questions are creeping in my head.

It is a mind game and Harvey Lloyd comments expressed it very well. I am thinking of many other structures that we find in humans, plants, and other creatures. Will let you know of whatever conclusion or possible explanations I arrive to dear Tausif.

Yes, you are right dear Tausif. The question then is how many coincidences do we expect?

Your answer is prompt dear Tausif Mundrawala and reflects your good knowledge. My main question is how did cockroaches, human cell membranes, bees and cockroaches and other examples determined all that the honeycomb structure is ideal for their growth. Even plants such as bamboo have this structure. How did they all realize this fact? Not only that, but also did they reveal their secrets to each other? Did bamboo have a "silent communication" with bees, for example? These are the questions that prompted me to write this buzz dear Tausif.

Thank you for your remarkable comment and two questions Sara Jacobovici. Silence is a form of communication as body language is. However; the interpretation of messages might vary from one person to another. I wondered how a membrane cell and the eye sensors of cockroaches have hexagonal structures. They have no direct communication and hence the term silent communication crossed my mind. The paradox of hidden power as you highlight it gives urges me to think deeper. I am so happy with the reasoning of your comment.

Ali Anani writes, "Honeycomb structures reveal more than that. The concept of honeycomb structures extends into different domains." An "eye opener".

Your buzzes are expansive Ali Anani. It is always an experience reading them. This one is no exception. I can only comment in the moment but what you write stays with me for a much longer period of time. In the moment, I am captured by two things: 1. "silent communication" and 2. "hidden power". The first, "silent communication", assumes the opposite of silence, sound. Sound is vibration which is heard differently by different life forms. There is an embedded paradox here; if the communication is silent, is the silence itself the communication or is it possible to tell if there is anything being communicated? The second, "hidden power", assumes the opposite of hidden, what is visible. If the power is not seen, it can be experienced in different ways. If it is experienced at all, can we say that it is hidden? As always, thank you for allowing me to think aloud and spontaneously and always for your inspiration and learning, Dr. Ali.

You nailed it down superbly Harvey Lloyd " I have strong beliefs that i take in faith. But have no truth of facts". May be I dare say there are very few lasting facts. Can we conclude from variable facts? I am with you that what calms the mind is faith.

Expanding the intentions would cause me to consider the many lives that have come before you and i, who asked and answered these very questions. Leaving a legacy of even more questions. In my very small walk within the timeline i realize i add but yet a few more variables for those i come in contact. I have no answers for the moment of beginning and struggle with those who think they do. I have strong beliefs that i take in faith. But have no truth of facts. The microscope is no more than a car. It can takes us to places of speculation and aligning variables. My thought is this journey will be the same in in another 1,000 years. The larger question is can we choose to believe in something and move on with the health of humanity?

This is a fascinating comment Harvey Lloyd. You probed with it some of my intentions in publishing this buzz. The challenge you pause in asking "My fascination is the moment of beginning. Something happened that created our current understanding of physical laws and properties. Can we ever see that moment"?. This is a very deep question. In complex system we work backwards in trying to understand how a system evolved. How fixed the physical laws shall remain adds to my loss. We are discovering now that Newtonian thinking isn't enough. Will be ever sure of what happened at the moment of beginning? Again, you throw another big challenge in your line "Although we can certainly break out the microscope and see what is present today, the variables over time is what established the structures". Can we identify the small variables and their interactions that led to such striking structural similarities? Thank you Harvey for making comment that boggles my mind.

Harvey Lloyd

As usually you pose some very deep discussion and challenges in commenting, Ali Anani. The "hidden force" is and will be the challenge within my lifetime. You see within the structures of nature patterns during your lifetime, what happens when we look back to the beginning? What if gravity was less, our distance from the sun more or less or many other factors that in the beginning established our physical world's evolutionary process. The physics we see today and try and understand are from origins many millennia ago. Although we can certainly break out the microscope and see what is present today, the variables over time is what established the structures. My fascination is the moment of beginning. Something happened that created our current understanding of physical laws and properties. Can we ever see that moment?
