Comfortably Uncomfortable in the Comfort Zone

Comfortably Uncomfortable in the Comfort Zone

948871c9.jpg

You are setting happily in your comfortable zone. It might be uncomfortable; yet you enjoy the familiarity you have with the pain. Sometimes the pain of staying in the painful trough of the comfort zone is greater than the desire to move out of it. This is a paradox that needs further study.

Standing objects tend to remain so. Humans setting on a trough are the same. There are opposing forces in tension. The negative emotions of fear, negative thinking, regret, self-blaming and self-mistrust that tend to draw us back. The desire to move to a better place, the creativity of finding simple and effective solutions, curiosity to know what awaits us outside the trough and ambition are forward moving emotions. It is sad that we tend to magnify the negative emotions and therefore end up going deeper in the trough.

Falling to the negative emotions shapes our characters. Character is not what we experience; it is more how we respond to what we experience. When we experience negative emotions and allow ourselves to be the prey of these predators we lose our character. We lose hope, the desire to be better, the power of imagination and the creativity to realize these imaginations. We limit ourselves to stay in the trough and yield to fear and self-mistrust. This happens and we forget that there is the needle of opportunity hidden in haystack of impossibilities.

It is sad that we prefer to stay in the trough painfully for we think what is outside id more painful or we become fearful of change. There is also the pain of change. This reminds me of few people I know who refuse to go to a dentist even they suffer badly from a rotten tooth. They imagine the pain of treatment is greater than the pain of its suffering. Only when the tooth becomes extremely painful they go for treatment.

When we focus our attention to the place we are in and assume other places are more gloomy then we have mostly developed characters that see negativity as a blessing because it is still better than the miseries we imagine awaiting us elsewhere. We lose the spirit of discovery, of trying and breathing new air. We become the prey and the predator in one body. We fail to think of the hidden losses by staying where we are and the opportunities that await us if we move on.

We experience pain always in doing new things to start with. For example, moving into a new country speaking a language that you don't understand word of is painful. The pain of leaving home and the pain of not communicating compound and may force you to return home. It is at these difficult moments that we need to think what comes after pain? Sooner or later you shall gain a new language, knowledge of new cultures and habits and new opportunities might emerge. It is these moments that we need to move on by the positive emotions, thoughts and actions with readiness to accept the initial pain. It is at these moments that we need to weaken or repel the negative thoughts to keep our characters strong to face the new challenges.

Some ladies try to shrink there facial pores, but no matter what they stay the same. Deceptively, they look smaller on well-washed faces. Unfortunately we tend to do the same. We may scale down the pores of problems so that may look smaller. This doesn't serve the issue. It is the acceptance of facts and moving on that make sense. The syndrome of Alex in the Wonderland is still alive.

It is the instability that leads to self-organizing and the emergence of new possibilities. It is about time to move out of the trough.

This is a sensational comment dear Harvey Lloyd. What captured my attention greatly is your line The beginnings of rising from the trough are always met with naysayers and those who new you before, when you were still in the trough." You are 100% correct and early steps are the most difficult ones. Like a child when starting to walk he fails and by insisting to succeed he succeeds. The energy and desire to move up are what differentiates great leaders from others.

Dear Sara Jacobovici- I have just noticed that you published a beautiful buzz today. I was so busy to write a comment. I shall do in few minutes. As regard your comment here " brings our attention to things which are happening internally or externally, to something that gets triggered by emotions (both negative and positive) which come from experiences attached to meanings...". This is a powerful insight and I have no doubt that you shall expand on this line. It is worthy. I tank you for your kind words and sharing oof this buzz. Thi means a lot to me.

The "Trough" is an excellent word. Change, specifically character change, is difficult at best and at its worst can lead to competitive brain battles. When we think of great leaders who have stepped above the trough we can certainly discuss their accomplishments, but for me i can only imagine the challenges in their start. The beginnings of rising from the trough are always met with naysayers and those who new you before, when you were still in the trough. This is the place where we require courage and faith. Courage to continue the journey out, and faith that outside the trough is the world we want to live. The banks of the trough are becoming the issue. We certainly can create the walls of our discontent, but humanity is also divided and building walls. Gone are the days of apprentice and journeyman teacher. The expectation is that all must start at the top of their field. Whether from their own perspective or the environment they work. We should grow people out of their trough and not add to their walls of discontent.

Ali Anani writes: "Character is not what we experience; it is more how we respond to what we experience." A must read.

I would be doing your buzz a disservice if I were to attempt to highlight a particular line Ali Anani. It flows beautifully and poetically as it integrates facts with insight. One concept that is reinforced for me is how fear has been transformed from our earlier stage of development survival tool, that communicates and brings our attention to things which are happening internally or externally, to something that gets triggered by emotions (both negative and positive) which come from experiences attached to meanings. The predator/prey metaphor is very powerful. Thank you Dr. Ali, for another push that moves us forward in our thinking and learning.

Dear David Navarro L\u00f3pez- often we here the right and left brain or the logical and creative brain. THis time you expand our thoughts with your line "reptilian brain, or our basic instincts and our cortex, or our rational thoughts, in order to...". THis led you to some very interesting perspectives. Yes, we are still programmed to pay attention more to negative emotions than positive one. Will we make the swing one day?

Dear Ali, to your words "It is sad that we tend to magnify the negative emotions" I like the theory that we as humans, have been millennia in the jungle, and our reptilian brain, responsible for our survival, has been "programmed" to just pay attention to the threats, to the negative things, and triggers an immediate reaction without our conscious level, our rational brain or cortex even noticing it. But now we have, since relatively short time, the cortex brain, and we are not using all the potential it has yet, we are just at the beginning. In my opinion, there is still a fight between our reptilian brain, or our basic instincts and our cortex, or our rational thoughts, in order to, in your words "to move on by the positive emotions, thoughts and actions with readiness to accept the initial pain. " Our instincts don't want to accept the initial pain. Our rational thoughts tell us we should do it in order to enhance our situation. "The force of going forward" should lead us. To succumb as prey to negative things puts us back, hinders us from human advancing, makes us more "animals" than we really are. I believe we are still not so far away from our "animal past", and that the key for human progress, as you are pointing out in this delightful post, resides in taking advantage of these instincts instead of falling to be victims of them.

Thank you event for making a prompt comment. I liked your prescription dear that "Failure and rejection" are responsible for our freezing in place. I would say fears of both failure and rejection so that the ugly face of fear appears. We need to be bigger than both fears ". No wonder you move forward, Ivette

Ali Anani You have given much to think about in this post. One line that stands out to me is: "This happens and we forget that there is the needle of opportunity hidden in haystack of impossibilities." Brilliant post Ali - thank you.

Again... if we can identify threats and obstacles then we are more capable to move ahead than we were in a state of ignorance. Doubt and fear are natural, sustainig them is conditioned trait we humans have developed. We prolong the actual pain due to the imagined pain. It hurts but it serves certain other ulterior motives of gain or delusion, as i have witnessed...not necessarily a universal rule.

I think pain can also be associated with past events and it may impact judgement sometimes depending on what level is one emotional strength :-)
