Creativity Sweet Zone
I was pondering on the most creative times. These are times that we suffer from the tensions of dealing with opposites. Are there best times for creativity? If so, when and why these times exist and what are their sweet zones or spots?
I reviewed some of the greatest creative ideas and why they were born while asleep. I thought of my own ideas and when they were born?
I even considered nature and the spring times when the rainy showers of April generate the May flowers. Creative ideas maybe the flowers of the showers of confused and scattered ideas that seem to have no resemblance to reality, but then proved they were the seed that allowed the crystals of new ideas to form. Who could think that while asleep Kekule found the inspiration that a benzene ring closed like a serpentine closes on itself as if biting its tail? Spring is the sweet zone between winter and summer.
Live the spring of creativity and flowering of ideas. Spring is the season with atmospheric energy and tension of unsettled weather conditions. What is the spring for generating creative ideas?
I find that the best creative times are those times that we you have two opposites close enough to bond, but not too far to be completely separated or too close to repel each other. The reason that great ideas come during sleep is that when the logical brain is still functioning at low level to allow for the conscious mind to function. This way it may be easier to swing from one brain to the other.
A second question jumps to mind. Why don’t we always generate ideas while asleep? One reason is that we go to bed while our logical brains are fatigued to think. We need it to be functional, but not dominating. This is possible if we retire to bed at these times and then we have the two brains- the logical and creative brain- bonding together. The tension of the opposites may be tuned to function without one brain dominating the other. This is the spring of creativity that is energetic enough to allow for new thinking structures to emerge. It is not the conscious mind or the unconscious mind. It is not that you asleep or awake. It is not that you are ideas-oriented or people-oriented. It is not that you are sure or doubtful about an idea. It is both in each case. It is the twinning of the opposites that forms emerging new ideas.
That we talk frequently about night dreaming and not about daydreaming may make sense. Daydreaming is the deliberate and conscious act of distracting self away from reality. The unconscious mind is idle. This is contrasting with night dreaming and the opportunity for the conscious and unconscious mind to work together. Maybe it is not even the swing from one brain to the other; more it is their fusion into a new brain that leads to new thinking.
I was relieved to find these thoughts have firm support from recent research findings. Our brains do creative work well when you’re tired. These are the times when we have both brains close enough to work together.
The above-mentioned finding makes me question the value of creative sessions in organizations. Many fail because the logical minds of the participants are on alert and ready to criticize creative ideas because they seem to be illogical. The separation of the brains between members thinking logically and other thinking creatively deprive them from the opportunity of generating new ideas. I think that more thoughts should be given to the best times for these sessions to be held to have any real value. The spring hours of the day are short and we need such sessions to be held during those times.
The minds become blind if too tired, and tend to be critical if completely relaxed. We want times when the minds are in both situations. Call them the spring times of creativity.
Acknowledgement and dedication- I wrote this post following a comment by my notable friend Harvey Lloyd to go to bed before falling completely sleepy so that new ideas may pop up in my mind. This post resulted from me experiencing his valuable suggestion. Thank you Harveyمقالات من Ali Anani

I have the same issue dear Proma \ud83d\udc1d Nautiyal or I cannot recreate the same magic in written words that I had so vividly seen the night earlier".Maybe that is why it is called sweet zone because it is the sweetest of times. Yes, is my answer to your question. We need to have both brains interacting fast enough to create ideas that either mind may create alone. You write and you experience these sweet zones. It is frustrating when you have a sweet idea that turns bitter because we lost it when we wake up. This explains the need to write ideas as they occur to us. I use the mobile phone these days to record my ideas as they pop up. Time has its sweet zones my good friend..

Fay Vietmeier Even though I attended a wedding of a relative last night and came home late I couldn't still respond to your comment even if my eyes need "pruning" You wrote "GROWTH can be a continuous process". I smiled and opened my mouth in surprise. This is because I intend to write my next post on step-wise growth versus logarithmic growth(the main types of growth". So,my response shall be next week on this.

Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee IDEAS do need pruning ... GROWTH can be a continuous process (I would like to believe) I imagine myself as a beautiful Bonsai ... the eye of the "Master-Gardner" looks ... sees the desired outcome and prunes The wise Bonsai ... submits to the pruning for it trusts the Masters prescient ability The Bonsai is lovingly and patiently shaped... until it becomes what the Master intended A masterpiece ;~)

& #44 Thank You. In terms of reverse creativity think about "inversion" as James Clear talks about it https://jamesclear.com/inversion Here we contemplate the destructive and from that sharpen our creative ability because we anticipate what could go wrong. I referenced the Dunning-Kruger effect in a response at LinkedIn but the reason I was thinking about it was because of this thread. With the Dunning-Kruger effect people have a tendency to overestimate their own ability and that explains people like Donald Trump who like to project that they are great thinkers when they are not i.e. "illusory superiority". It is the reverse of that effect which is interesting because we call that effect more popularly as '"Imposter Syndrome". I do not like the term "imposter syndrome" instead the reverse of Dunning-Kruger is the actual explanation - how many times have we seen highly capable people not believe in themselves or not recognize their own brilliance, so they assume they are merely average. Thus reverse creativity is a reverse Dunning-Kruger effect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOLmD_WVY-E The issue of reverse creativity is not only the waste of skills that society could benefit from, but it is the loss of personal success as the reverse of Dunning-Kruger means we may be ceding our power to people less competent than us, or not taking opportunities we do not believe we are good enough for. The consequences of that is we never elect the best President, or very smart women cede their personal capital to men, when reverse creativity means both that talent goes wasted but society continues to reward the ignorant. It takes an act of creativity to awaken our own creativity and then break away our chains.

Your comment filled me with deep emotions. Your last paragraph summarizes your thoughts beautifully. It reminded me of plants that grow with aerial roots growing downwards with gravity. You also stretch the value of the idea of a sweet zone of creativity. Too much control versus hardly any control. WE need both so that no one would overwhelm and the sweet zone disappears. No control and we have confusion generating too many new ideas. Too much command and control and we end up with the sad situation you described "..., creativity does not branch out for oxygen, it digs deeper underground, we turn the tree of creativity upside down and those years are damaging because life is not best when it is buried like roots". We bury creativity. I love this idea. It is terrible, but to the point/ But creativity stays alive, but dormant and when conditions allow it awakens up. No wonder conservative societies have had very little contributions to creativity. Controlling social forces may become excessive and the sweet zone of creativity diminishes. Your comment expands the value of the tree as a metaphor for creativity and I think a new perspective is emerging. May I call this Reverse Creativity?

My own experiences are that as creativity was pruned, the roots were not. My experiences is that my own creativity developed in the hidden world of roots and so I did utilize creativity but to create my own world. My school reports mainly said "Manjit stares into space and does nothing, he is very lazy" - but it was not laziness, creative people can either withdraw into their own world or worse they shift their creativity to engage in maladjusted choices. That is why I am not surprised to find bright people caught by addiction or getting in trouble with the law. Thankfully I did not move into a darker world of either crime or dark rebellion, I simply tuned out the world that was harsh or destroying creative values. Creativity that goes underground is creativity that does not add value much needed value to society. Creative people denied creative space or experiences or education that enrich creativity, simply shift their creativity to maintain a different reality. Yet that different reality comes with costs where no one can see where the roots of creativity are going, and at the same time recognizing how much life there should be in the "tree of life". When people look at some people and say "they live in their own world", the world is not benefiting from that world - yet creative people are simply using their creativity in more wasteful rather than value creating ways. Think about the life of women in highly patriarchal societies - women who lived under these conditions found ways of being creative but lost out that which would have contributed so much to society. Creativity demands the oxygen where creativity branches out into the world, but in cases like mine or in the case of women and in the case of strict societies limiting people's freedoms, creativity does not branch out for oxygen, it digs deeper underground, we turn the tree of creativity upside down and those years are damaging because life is not best when it is buried like roots.

A great comment my friend Bill Stankiewicz, \ud83d\udc1d Brand Ambassador. In fact, it is your longest comment on any of my posts. You know that big cities are repelling young talents because of the rising cost of sustaining a quality life. That may be good for the unfortunate areas to attract talents and benefit from their presence. It is also good for the talents because they don't have financial and traffic burdens which free their minds to do what they are doing best.

I wake up with a correction dear Harvey Lloyd. I have just edited the post and added the last paragraph, in which I mention you and your valuable suggestion. Yes, what we observe and what may have elapsed our observation might be the talk between the two brains before falling in deep sleep. You are spot on. That you generate new questions means you open a new round for the talking brains to sleep on and see what emerges,

On a side note. I listened to a scientist who is highly published and has a keen career in the public, discuss that nothing if really something. In an attempt to not deal with the true casualties current science is displaying in origins and destinations. Amazingly he has very large cheerleading squad who thinks the same way he does. Science both hard and social has lost all credibility within its public domain. Some have even ventured to state that science is becoming the new religion. Requiring more faith than any religion humans have experienced.

If we conclude that the levels are degrees of openness within active listening, then i say yes there are different levels. We have all been accustomed to team members who begin to defend their area of expertise when new ideas come before them. EIther through fears of failure or stress on resources. This reduces their ability to present their skills and begins to shutdown the rest of the group as new ideas must now deal with fears first. After 30 minutes all minds have become logical, taping the creative side would be easier with a tree.

It is surprising that same people who reject your thoughts are the same people who create new ideas using the same thoughts you offer in your comment Harvey Lloyd. Yes, I recall your comment on "This was the reason for my comment concerning the last fifteen minutes. It is during this time we can prayerfully condition our mind to respond to the two halves discussion". Unfortunately, I lost track of its reference.I concur fully and again based on my experience I say it is a big yes. This is why I highlighted the idea that we need to be sleepy to allow for imagination and also slightly awake so that the two brains may talk to each other. Enough to talk, but not long enough for the logical mind to start criticizing. Are there different levels of activities for our conscious acts?

Our senses throughout the day take in more than we can manage during real time. A lot is going on in conversations and meetings. We can open ourselves to the process by identifying various positions, word choice and body language. ANother area is to consider what you didn't see and maybe should have. Aligning these thoughts in outline form and attempting to draw wisdom from the details not understood at the time, we can sleep on the new findings. Hopefully waking to some new queries of the points. I know i wake up with better questions more than solutions.

You are an originator thinker dear Harvey Lloyd. Yes, when the two brains "meet" and talk to each other things emerge without any prior planning. Is it their chemical bonding? Is it there fusion? Whatever it is, what counts is the emerging ideas that broaden our perspectives. Avert good point your raise is that we need long-enough sleeping time to keep the two brains conversing. I don't want to repeat my own stories. I can well remember that the breakthrough in my PhD research came in a dream. What is equally important to have a way to record your dream for in the morning they disappear faster than they emerged.

+Jerry- absolutely, and I fully concur with your comment. Many managers are trapped in the poverty gap of habitual thinking and either ideas fall in this trap or they are false in their opinion. Or, may be it is a poverty gap of conservative thinking that stands against new ideas. This is how the ball bounces, just to emulate yours and this how it goes.
Jerry Fletcher

Dr. Ali, You reinforce my observation that one of the myths of management is that more minds make for more and better ideas. That seems to be the fall back for managers that have little or no creativity and less faith in the ability of their staff. And they wonder why it doesn't work! And so it goes.

Dear Jerry, I thank you for your detailed and well-outlined comment. I liked in particular your writing "That's why creative problems are generally left with small teams, usually fewer than four". I fully agree because they may not create group influence in such small numbers. That organizations separate the generation of ideas from the subsequent logical evaluation is commendable. What happens is that in many organizations a large group participates in generating ideas with some members tilted towards logical thinking and they aim at shooting ideas prematurely. The discovered of polymers when addressed a scientific gathering to present his ideas and novel findings was described as a crazy researcher by a notable chemist. The discoverer (Staudinger) won the Noble Prize in chemistry five years later. This is how it goes.
