Embedded Choices

Embedded Choices

82cfb0ed.jpg

Male bees waggle dance to attract the fit drone bees. The female bee shall watch the male bees dancing to select the fittest ones to mate with. It is her choice and whatever she chooses shall decide her chances of birthing healthy bees and change consequences. We aren't different for whatever choice we make shall improve or deteriorate our chances in life and change to the better or worse.

We may choose to act or not acting and freeze in our position for fear of doing the wrong thing. Many times we find ourselves on the opposite ends such as control or not control others, have a focused attention or unfocused one and work and earn or stay in bed hoping to earn. Bees on beBee have the choice between publishing their ideas or not for fear of getting criticized.

Whatever choice we take means we are changing our current position to another one. The starting position has changed and consequently the consequences shall change. It is unfortunate that small changes in our positions that are unnoticeable today may show drastic consequences in the future because of the butterfly effect. There is always an embedded choice in what we choose and it is choosing between short-term results and long-term ones. One good example is The Greenhouse Effect. We produce gases such as carbon dioxide at a large scale. Carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases act like a blanket by absorbing infrared radiation and preventing it from escaping into outer space. Global warming is the result and life on earth is threatened. Short-term thinking didn't give enough space to pause and think of the consequences. This has resulted in lowering the quality of life on earth. Funnily enough, we talk about the butterfly effect when we have endangered the lives of butterflies to the extent that many species are now a story of the past.

We need to choose and we need to also consider the consequences. We have another embedded choice here: to be selfish and think of ourselves or be unselfish and think of others and what consequences will result in the future. It is a choice between thinking between now and the future. The trouble is for now the harm may be insignificant, but over the years it could escalate and risk the lives of others.

It is unfortunate that we choose to go with disorder than order. The harm of smoking a cigarette a day might not be noticeable today, but we all know the consequences in the long term. We enjoy the present, but darken the future. It is also with drinking water as I neglected drinking enough water on a daily basis and that resulted in severe health problems, most of which disappeared because I was forced to drink enough water or else die.

27290b81.jpg

Eating junk food is another example. A recent story of a volunteer who kept eating junk month for more than a month was reported to end up having the health of quite orderly people. This is a form of accelerated simulation of the consequences of our choices.

Why do we hope to have a healthy plant in the future when we pick a bad seed? The queen bee doesn't do it because she builds its choice on getting sperms from healthy drones. Are we sometimes less than bees in making choices? Sadly, my answer is yes.

It's a pleasure to share this buzz it was a embedded choice to share the lovely message you were conveying through this buzz. #Whatever choice we take means we are changing our current position to another one. The starting position has changed and consequently the consequences shall change." ! When we make a choice we fail to consider the most important question. A.How does this choice benefit me ? B. Will it add value to my life? C. Will the consequences of this choice be good for the people around me? " Rather than the above we end up with the below questions? Will this choice benefit others ? etc " I believe that the embedded choice for me is asking the questions A,B & C. You might call it selfish. But this is the lesson I've learnt from my experience with the people and my choices in life so far. Are we sometimes less than bees in making choices? Sadly,Even my answer is yes. But I'm learning to be Bee 🐝

Plants consume carbon dioxide and thus reduce the greenhouse effect my friend debasish majumder. If it wasn't for the plants living on earth would be almost impossible. We are producing more carbon dioxide than plants can consume at the same time we suffer from deforestation. That is more carbon dioxide and less plants. This is our dilemma.Thank you for bringing this point to the discussion menue.

DEar CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit- you amaze me again with your not only superb comment, but also for your ability to connect my buzzes together. I am endowed to have your comments indeed. Equally impressing is your metaphor and I know one thing for sure- " if consequences flow into an existing positive spiral then consequences may extend in a way that delights rather than scares us". You surely fit into this criteria. I told you I am blessed o read your comments on my buzzes. I love your conclusion remark "Individual choice is impacted by our own individual capability to see choices from the larger context". It is through constructive dialogues that we may tune to the waggling dance of superb comments such as yours.

The ocean of consequences society faces begins with individual streams of choices. This little stream that is flowing with me is focused on the flow of a reservoir to my home rather than the flow of the stream to all the estuary of society, which in part is related to the sum and quality of homes. Noting that an estuary is where the tide meets the stream, there are so many tides currently in action that it is exhausting to observe their wasted energy. The expression that is called a silver-lining is where we have an optimistic view of what presently feels horrendous. What extenuates consequences is also our immediate and visceral reactions which accelerate in the direction of change. If these consequences flow into an existing negative spiral, nature extenuates it - if consequences flow into an existing positive spiral then consequences may extend in a way that delights rather than scares us. So what is in my reservoir that is not flowing into the unknown consequences of the estuary? The "Ideas Waggle Dance" is still in my estuary https://www.bebee.com/producer/@ali-anani/ideas-waggling-dance Here you related an electron orbit with a waggle dance and a waggle dance to a butterfly. If we attain an ability to utilize our own information reservoirs and can make likewise relationships between three images, we are also capable of making smart life choices. Yet even the brightest person can make sub-optimal choices where either they just don't see the consequences or worse just don't care about the consequences. Usually it is due to not seeing rather than refusing to see. The waggle dance from May 2016 is about human beings able to see more than what is presented and the waggle dance today is more binary in it's choice. Individual choice is impacted by our own individual capability to see choices from the larger context.

#18 - This is a dilemma and I am truly looking forward to enhanced comments from all on this issue. I ask myself for now that governments collect huge taxes from cigarettes and alcohols. This need for taxes is contradicted with the task of the governments to provide health insurances for the population. How much of the proceeds of taxes go for treating illnesses resulting from cigarettes and alcohols? If I claim I have a ready answer I shall not be telling the perfect truth. Besides, as the governments increase taxes the smokers have less money to buy good food for themselves and the families. I dare say in some countries more than 20% of the income goes for buying cigarettes. So, are we trading an evil with an evil?

For a latter read, enjoy the weekend. Sara Jacobovici the reason for the need for enhanced growth, storage and temperature sensitive food is so we can serve the population that is condensed into small places. I don't advocate the process but do recognize we have evolved into a life of convenience that has dictated how food is processed and produced. How do you unwind the need for these food stuffs without hurting the high density location? We need X number of tons of food to serve the population. Modified food stuffs allow us to do this efficiently. I agree it may not be healthy, but i also recognize that reducing food production below needs will ultimately hurt the very ones we wish to help. No/less food vs GMO food, which is the better choice? Certainly we should continue to find ways to feed ourselves in a healthier way, but how we do that could have devastating consequences on volume available to the population. I would offer up the environmentally friendly laws that reduced coal to nothing. From where i sit this was transparent. It devastated homes, families and whole economies in our rust/coal belt of America.

Ali Anani Fully agree with what you say. My thoughts which overlap with yours: What is a decision other than a choice in action, belief or attitude? As such, not changing it is a decision in itself. Learning and adaptation happens when imperfect decisions are perceived and reflected on. Smaller incremental decisions may often be the better way to learn and optimise but sometimes a big step into uncertainty needs to be taken. Thank you for the interesting discussion thread Doc Ali.

Harvey Lloyd. I have one choice and that is to agree with you "The density of existence is causing the issue". Yes, I agree. I wonder if the families were aware of their choices if such crowdiness problem would exist. What starts small on a family scale eventually grows into a huge issue. You wrote correctly When we consider the concentration of humans in small land masses we create issues that as a whole can not be solved by the individual". I still have a question though- didn't those families realize that the area they live in have a limited capacity to meet their requirements? In poor countries we have a rapid growth of population; in contrast, rich countries have almost zero population growth. Poor countries feel the pain, but they also compound it. I am sure you have something to say here.

Gert Scholtz will find your response as much valuable as I find it. I agree entirely with your wisdom. What forced me mostly to pause is your writing "the invisible effects of habitual thinking". This is a buzz on its own. When we don't make a choice in reality we do- we choose to continue the way we are. So, even if decisions aren't perfect we chose and this affects our decision. To decide and proven later that our decision was imperfect gives us the opportunity to learn and adapt. Yes, if we choose to take good and even small choices will improve our chances in improving the consequences. Do you agree?

Harvey Lloyd

I agree here with the basic tenants of attitude as you described in three. But within this segment i believe you would want to consider a growing issue that is indirectly causing the situation. When we consider the concentration of humans in small land masses we create issues that as a whole can not be solved by the individual. Population growth and the sub-division of high density housing has lead to the need to for food production that can only be met outside of the area. Also with mass production. If we had the agrarian lifestyle of the past, social media would not be present. We would all be in the fields and tending livestock. (Somewhat overstated for the point.) This presents us with the proverbial catch 22. The density of existence is causing the issue. To revert back to an earlier time period through regulation would devastate Manhattan and quite frankly all of the east and west coast. In considering the solution we have to keep in mind that individuals can only impact the situation but so much. Regulation as a solution could disrupt the population centers adversely at the basic levels.

Ali Anani To your interesting and provocative post: Our choices are often not optimal because of impulse overriding good sense, imperfect information, short term orientation vs a longer term view, and the invisible effects of habitual thinking. The quality of decisions might be improved by taking a longer time to develop and consider information (a luxury we often don’t have), testing alternatives with others thereby shaping the value calibration around possibilities, and sometimes waiting for the sway of emotion and impulse to subside. Decisions are not always easy, neither are they perfect and unfortunately one can only fully judge a decision and effects thereof in hindsight. Thank you Doc Anani for an interesting post.

Sara Jacobovici- the story is a sad one and again reflects short sightedness. If we don't suffer today then we shall suffer tomorrow. Even if we don't suffer tomorrow our kids shall suffer the day after tomorrow. Yes, attitudes are to blame. I am going to eagerly read your link, but meanwhile I must say how satisfied I am to see your involvement and its positivity as signaled by becoming a vegetarian and still find many more choices than those people who in spite of having many choices still opt for junk food.

Sara Jacobovici- it is true, but very sad what you wrote "The mass consumer, however, remains the threat to the environment. And the industry’s attitude is, as long as the public asks for it, we will produce it, regardless of the consequences". There is an embedded paradox here and you, being The Queen of Paradoxes, may help me in solving this paradox. As you mentioned, humans have many choices to choose from and so why go for the choice of least value? Is it the choice of least resistance to the consumer? Or, are our attitudes, as you mentioned, to blame? This issue is boggling my mind.

Dear Sara Jacobovici- you give weight and value to this buzz with your very thoughtful comment. Yes, we are consumer driven and parts 2 and 3 of your comment validates your saying on a very solid ground.

Part Three: The end of a story I have written about in the past is how when two friends are on a cruise ship and there is an alarm that the ship is sinking, while one is getting a lifejacket for himself and his friend, his friend is “relaxing” on a deck chair. When asked if he had not heard the alarm, that the ship is sinking, he responds; why panic, is it your ship? This “short-sighted” blindness is controlled by attitude. So, our capacities of projecting into the future and ethical responsibilities are denied expression. I think education is the key factor here. Bees and other species in nature do the “right” thing naturally. Humans need to be taught. I am taking the liberty of including a link of one of my very first posts (August/2014) about attitude in business. As always Dr. Ali, thank you for the opportunity to think out loud in the comment boxes of your thought provoking posts. http://www.artspsychotherapy.com/what_goes_around/

Sara Jacobovici

Part Two: When decades ago, I decided to become a vegetarian, it wasn’t an easy lifestyle choice in a community of meat-eaters. Then, when I decided to consume organic products, things became more difficult. And later, when I decide to keep Kosher, well…you can imagine. I didn’t have a weight problem in those days! Now, because over the years, more consumers have taken on these “alternative” lifestyles (presently there is a growth in choosing the vegan lifestyle), I have many more choices. The mass consumer, however, remains the threat to the environment. And the industry’s attitude is, as long as the public asks for it, we will produce it, regardless of the consequences. Why does the individual consumer make these irresponsible choices? Because of attitude.

Sara Jacobovici

منذ 7 سنوات #3

Part One: Dear Ali Anani what a tremendously thoughtful and important buzz. I apologize ahead of time, this is going to be a long comment. Two things that come up for me right away is, our human ability to project into the future, and our ethical ability to be responsible humans. When bees (or other species in nature) choose the best seed, it is because they are hard wired for a particular function. They just do it. They don’t debate whether it’s the right thing or not or make a choice based on a subjective experience. Humans are also hard wired for self-preservation but we transcend the purely physical and we have the capacity to make choices; in which is “embedded” responsibility. What is often challenging us is the number of choices we have available to us and, in our culture, it’s all consumer driven.

Your very thoughtful comment Harvey Lloyd reminds me of what  Mahatma Gandhi said: “Your beliefs become your thoughts,  Your thoughts become your words,  Your words become your actions,  Your actions become your habits,  Your habits become your values,  Your values become your destiny.”  Your comment is very consistent with this quote. I believe your reference to the family and its role is significant in this regard. We need to start from the family because there is hope. Yes, the family unit is the best seed. I concur with you

Harvey Lloyd

I believe we are a sum of our choices. Many versions of this statement have been submitted both in posts and memes. Choices evolve into a way of life, ritualistic, if you will, or habits. Once the habits of thought or action form, the future choices will be compared against them. One of these storied epochs is global warming. I know that change will be needed in the near future, but my actions of absorbing more energy for my existence continues. The irony of this epoch is that if a family was experiencing a destabilizing event, as our environment is, most likely they would join together and walk through the journey of changing the habits that lead to the event. However, as a community we cant pull together that way. The seed selection appears bad at the global issue but when we look at the family unit it is the best seed. The two scenarios are incongruent. Given the system and comparison i will always choose family. Families are causing global warming, not fossil fuels or coal or any other national contributor. This is a harsh statement, but choices of existence up to those that may appear in luxury, will continue until we bring the family on board to reduce our carbon footprint. I enjoy watching the protests in this area as i know everyone with signs and solidarity go home to conditioned homes in their car and stop by and pick up groceries from their favorite store. Their is no sarcasm here. But merely the point our existence today is predicated on the use of energy. Thought proving and challenging as always Ali Anani.
