Losers of Hope

Losers of Hope

49dea973.png

While watching selected matches of the world cup the idea of this buzz crossed my mind. Watching head coaches and how they perform their job during the games. Some head coaches were nervous, restless and with angry faces and screaming mouths. Other coaches were sitting on their chairs just observing the progress of the matches. Others showed confidence and clapped their hands when their team fell a goal behind. They kept the players motivated, hopeful and at the same time they made the right substitutions at the right time and managed to help the team win eventually.

The head coach of a soccer team role falls outside the playing yard as he isn’t involved directly in the game. His role starts from observing the opponents and analyzing their players, tactics, players’ individual performance individually and collectively and identifying their strength and weaknesses. Not only their strength and weaknesses during training, but also while playing in front of the audience on the stadiums and their ability to face playing in front of the watchful eyes and cameras. The coach realizes that players are like organs in the human body and these organs must work together for the body to remain healthy. The defense players, the midfield players and the frontline players are the levels of the team that need to synchronize their efforts so that the team may rise to higher levels of performance.

The playing conditions vary. If a team is the unlucky loser of a previous game and playing a new game with one option to win it are different than a team knowing that losing shall not affect its reaching the next stage of the competition. Here the coach of the losing team need to analyze a more complex situation and need to motivate and engage with the players to boost their morale and keep self-confidence and hope before he may implant the same in his players. Many head coaches become angry and make the players feel the same. It is during these difficult times that the head coach and his team need to reconsider their training schemes, dealing with players, game strategy and improve the selection of the playing team. In complex situation the past is not extensible to the future and the past great performance of some players may not be extensible to the future.

Will the head coach make a rigid plan regardless of how the game progresses, or a more flexible plan that evolves with the progress of the game? Once the players are on the field the role of the head coach changes as it is time for making instant decisions. It is the time to keep the players hopeful, motivated and should they face any setback during the game he is the one who should appear confident so that the players may stay positive, determined and not losers of hope and eventually losers of the game.

The head coach may apply a strict positioning policy of the players and that each player must “follow” the rules. Other coaches may allow the team to have more self-organizing freedom. How can a coach adhere to a rigid playing plan regardless of the progress of the game? How come many head coaches insisted on “fixing” pre-determined players and not try new and motivated players when the confidence-failing players are not playing to their expected capacity? Can a coach afford to have a fixed playing plan in a varied climate of the game?

Leaders are head coach of the team members. They need to do carefully select the players (team members) and organize them in a way to defend the organization and to reach the goal with the hope of scoring success. Leaders need to realize that during the play and facing circumstances that they aren’t the players; more they are the boosters of the players enhancing their motivation capacity and filling them with hope that by having setbacks they remain self-organized and self-confident that they shall eventually score success. The quality of great leaders is like those qualities of a great soccer coach. A great leader is never a loser of hope.

Despite the tyranny of technology, the Iot, and social media the value of embracing the human touch points along the paths of the collective journey. Old farts like us with years under our belts, youngsters just getting started, kids still in school, the six degrees of separation/connections and our ability to maximize each "point" we touch to advantage, benefit and growth. Chris 🐝R Guest I had a look at the research about Sport & Temperament & specifically Soccer & Temperament There's a lot of research about this. The General Good News is Players who participate in strenuous sports regularly and intensively are healthier psychologically than the general population ! [ Temperament Characteristics of Individuals Who Participate in Strenuous Sports J Research Quarterly for Exercise 7 Sport 57, 1986 - 2 ] The Team Player Good News is Team Sports Players had higher activity & lower anxiety levels than individual athletes & the general population. The role of team members & changes in playing position may provide more communication between team members. This may result in better emotional support & moderate individual displays of emotionalreactivity/individual glory seeking. The Specific Soccer Good News is Soccer players generally have low emotional reactivity & high endurance. They prefer playing as a team despite the presence of individuals with reactive temperaments. [ Influence of Temperament and Anxiety on Athletic Performance J Sports Sci Med. 2006 Sep; 5(3): 381–389. ] The Soccer Temperament Points of Interest News is There are interesting comparisons of Northern European "soccer wisdom" & Southern European "volatile Latin" temperaments. Also of interest is the influence of specific temperaments & sports migration where players are bought by clubs leading to a mismatch of indigenous playing styles. A very concise summary of the buzz Louise Smith. I must say that you captured the essence of the buzz and extracted the key points. We forget sometimes simple facts that a variable by fixed gives a variable product. For leaders/coaches who assume the product is fixed and keep their fixed mentality are simply as good as my "fixed knee". "The head coach of a soccer team role falls outside the playing yard as he isn’t involved directly in the game." This sentence & it's paragraph are such a concise explanation Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee & applicable to so many situations in life ! "How can a coach adhere to a rigid playing plan regardless of the progress of the game? " This coach is inflexible as he/she is anxious, afraid of spontaneous evaluations & risk aversive. "How come many head coaches insisted on “fixing” pre-determined players and not try new and motivated players when the confidence-failing players are not playing to their expected capacity? " New players are an unknown unproven entiity "Can a coach afford to have a fixed playing plan in a varied climate of the game?" Simple No ! This poor coach will not go far in his/her career. A great leader is never loses hope but also reads the play for a fluid creative game ! Joel Anderson- your comment is amazing and is as beautiful as the video song you shared. What baffled me most is your focus on hope which shows great synchronicity with I am charting out for my next buzz. I looked at the 14 stages of the emotions' movement of investors. They start from optimism and excitement to proceed to eventually turn into anxiety and denial to intensify eventually to panic, capitulation and despondency. The relief starts from turning the latter emotion to depression and then HOPE to be followed by relief and optimism. We have experienced this wave of emotions for long times. Hope is the first positive emotion following depression. I like to think of these as a prey-predator system. The predators (negative emotions) eat up the preys (positive emotions). Here the capacity of a person to hold negative emotions is of crucial importance in that these emotions don't eventually lead to chaotic feelings. Yes, what follows hope is exactly what you described in your super comment.

Joel Anderson

Hope is an interesting word. Based on comments I did a deeper dive and re-looked at the Websters definition and then looked at its antonyms. The context of the dialogue here gets to an interesting look under the hood and in engaging I have enhanced the value of of my personal life lessons kit bag (regardless of framework used or experienced--business, government, education, sports, profession, politics, etc.). I then looked at the definition of lose and loser and then the antonyms as well. If one loses hope, then are they hopeless. Some do fall in to this trap but the vast majority do not. In some respects, the construct of hope is just like vision, strategy and goals to achieve an objective. It starts out with something akin to a statement of intent, desire, want etc: I hope to....I hope I will.....I hope we can....I hope that....I hope you....etc. Hope by itself can be a strong factor in influencing action to achieve the desired hope or it can be a superficial placebo and shallow comment about desire with little substance or action behind whatever that hope may be. So many great comments on this thread. Well done Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee https://youtu.be/H9eqk7Z1O3M

It is amazing we have our own built in Google if we just give it a chance to flourish. We merely need to enter the search terms of future self and wala we find many different past experiences and naitive thoughts that are unique to us. I call them rabbit holes. We can search our own brain and find them or we can be lazy and allow Google to show us the holes. Google is good for helping us understand our own, found, rabbit holes, but should not be the creator. Hope like motivation, pride and the other character traits can always get out of whack. Specifically in their meaning as seen by others. You introduce a side topic here about nationalism within the paradigm that hope of winning brings. Myself i believe that what our ancestors in each nation did, bad and good, was hard fought for the group that would come after them. For this reason i believe pride in your national heritage is a good thing. Certainly not to the point of forceing it on other sovereign nation. Recent politics within the post modern realm have used our history to gauge current political status. This is a yellow flag and maybe even red flag event. Our ancestors within each nation had their reasons for leading the way they did. I can only attempt to understand these reasons and learn from them. As you stated the difference between TV/live experience, so history goes also. I can only experience it through the bias of today. Your country with all its humps and bumps is attempting to sort the future of humanity, its never pretty or easy. But each member should be inspired by the fact their country is in the mix of future tranquility. So wave your flag with the pride of all the thoughts of ancestors and their goals to defend the families of their generations. Government didnt build our countries, humans did. The pareto rule works in reverse here. The 80% is what we celebrate. Average Joe citizen that helped his/her families survive so we could be who we are today.

I would imagine that each thought on the triangle could produce another. My thought is if we could direct a person where to look, that time and experience would bring the other thoughts together. This may be wishful thinking. What i am witnessing is “i feel, therefore i am”. Although self expression is important i dont believe it should be self defeating. This in Itself is a much broader subject as reflected in CityVP 🐝 Manjit comment. The idea behind the graphic is to transfer thinking from our limbic system to our thinking brain. Just for evaluation before action. Not to eliminate a choice but rather to turn auto action into multiple choice where future self is considered. If i perform action B what are the consequences to future me? No choice is bad, but in proffesional and social settings consequences exist with each choice. By pausing to evaluate your response through the graphic you are proposing, we increase the probability the consequences will be benificial to future self. I am currently amazed at the flat earth responses that dominate each interaction. It would appear that the answer A is always the answer no letter the circumstance. This gets into the world of confirmation bias, another realm of craziness for another time. In the end wisdom is something that is supposed to be shared. Your graphic may be a way to open up dialogue where this could happen. We cant pour 50 years into another but we can, maybe, give pause for them to look at the map a little harder, towards future self.

I am still digesting your comment here Harvey Lloyd if it would be possible in the future to add images to comments. That shall be smashing. I drew the nested triangles in a way so that it would reflect your thoughts Harvey. The Future Potential is linked also to our desire and ability to be what we wish to be and hence affect our behavior. It is linked then to the purpose we have in life. As for the lower nested triangle behavior is surely governed by knowledge, experience and skills. However; I believe there are other factors in play such as social factors and how they may positively motivate us or act in the opposite direction. However; you open the possibility of expanding on the idea of using nested triangles in understanding human behavior.

We use war and sport as proxies for discussing leadership but it is a misguided proxy. Unless we are at the sports venue watching it live, what we experience "live" on our television is a record transmitted about 1 or 2 seconds earlier. Now in the live situation, we have this bizzare loss of hope in the faces of young children who burst into tears on seeing their team lose, These children only cry like that and treat it as grief because their parents have taught them nationalistic conditioning. When the World Cup comes to Canada in 2026 - we will have the bizarre situation where the host nation when playing a national group with a large presence in Canada will have Canadians cheering for the other team! Imagine Italy vs Canada, Portugal vs Canada or Croatia vs Canada. What I am saying here is that it is not about losing hope but what hope we think we are losing. Today Mexicans went super-emotional - as team and fans were crying because they assumed Germany would beat South Korea - but then on finding out what South Korea did - went running to find South Koreans and declaring them as "Mexicans". Of course there is a cute form of emotion here - but if hope is dressed up through a sports mentality - where is hope actually sitting. The starving child that is going to die today somewhere in the world will die in the moment our hope is expressed in a superficial context like a World Cup. We react therefore to recency rather than hope and we react to visceral emotion that is momentary and on screen, rather than at depth. Competitive sport produces losers - that is a fact of the pyramid scheme that any sporting competition actually is. Yet hope should not be a conditioning or an attachment - when football fans died in the Heysel Stadium disaster, they did not have hope in Belgium winning the World Cup - they transcending back to what life means.

Very aptly put. I myself enjoy chaos, the kind that forces us into a realm that is unexplored. Recent mainstream writings tend to show the newer generations in a bad light. I sense this is inappropriate, less they forget their youthful pasts. We seem apt at comparing the new and the old but the conversation stops when you ask how to move forward. The older gen's need to engage and learn the new languages so that wisdom found is not lost in acrimony. More importantly our older generations have a lot to offer but we need to learn to share the world with the next generation, not throw rocks at them. Your points are well presented. The world we live is the world we live. Wishing for something to go away or change to bring happiness to one side leads nowhere. Learning to dance with different perceptions is where creation lives.

Joel Anderson

Organizational dynamics are filled with myriad examples of chaotic situations. Similar to the soccer pitch--the work place and our individual ecosystems each are filled with steady state, chaos, change, momentum and fluidity. We learn from our past, we experience the now, and we await and/or try to influence a new now horizon that is out there somewhere. We all think, act, behave, interact and orient (maybe fixate) on things in our own ways. I think the challenge is that from an individual perspective, it is human nature to look at others with some modicum of circumspection. But in the realm of wary unwillingness that is where collectively we have an opportunity to practically apply the measures you all so eloquently describe in opening the dialogue and taking the risk to understand. Change is constant. Change is fluid. Change is messy. Change can be structured. and yes, change can be chaotic. We all find ourselves at different spots on the continuum's of our journeys. Some late in the day, others early in the morning. Some well along our given/chosen path, while others are just getting started. Each of us use our experiences and lessons therein as we strive for that illusive horizon and new now. I think in some respects, whether it be left or right brain induced, we easily lose sight of the ingredients that make up the stew. I am just an old fart, who works in and interacts within environments that have a wide array of generations where in the end, I for one have come to a conclusion. Ulitmaely, despite our differences we aren't that different in the end. Despite a world heavily influenced by technology, the human element remains fundamentally important. Approaches will vary and change. Orientation and understandings take on different perspectives. To me, how we respond to and interact within it all is the interesting thing that contributes to a world that is never dull.

#57 Your thoughts here on engagement with chaos is the thoughts i sense are lacking within our newer entries to employment. Chaos is more a theory of things that don't go according to plan and you are the leader. Given that you have given your best up to that point you need new tools or thoughts to lead well. My thoughts here is determining a mechanism in which we can visit the aspects you discussed in 56. You choose a path and from what i read you were successful in using some very right brain techniques. Ownership of various aspects of actions, themselves, etc. These concepts seem easy to the boomers who have experienced life differently than our offspring. These concepts are not necessarily built in. Its not so much how to do something as it is to help folks learn the process of leading in chaotic situations. I believe i have learned enough about you through your writings that the process has been refined in you over years of experience. You started from a different place than our offspring. So how can we as boomers offer up leadership to a younger generation that assumes chaos is a function of knowledge or lack of it? When we know that humans come to the team in various conditions of chaos in their own lives. Lining them up under a banner of goals is like herding cats sometimes. A note on the use of the word chaos. I am really not discussing the theory, but rather the human dynamic that plans remove the law of unintended consequences. When these consequences show up the mental state it causes can become anything, depending on the individual. In my mind it represents the storm at sea, it ain't smooth sailing.

Joel Anderson

And not to detract what if one chose to replace the word chaos with perturbation and assessed the elements influencing the triangle discussion from that angle. I am way out of my league here, and apologize if I am off "base" here.

"... if chaos visits and we get out of whack..." Ali knows and understands this much better than I do but in living at the edge of chaos however. one might surmise that true chaos doesn't exist. In its randomness, there is this strange structure and order that lives right on the edge. For me, in trying to understand the potential influences that chaos (or near chaos) present, I just try to put the challenges, the inputs, the outputs etc..into perspective with a realization that you have to practically merge the left and right of it all. You got to start somewhere or you end up in a conundrum. If not, then what?

I started this after inheriting (taking command) of a unit that was considered by many to be a rag tag rogue outfit of misfits. It was adrift and was considered by many to be the place to send your problems to. It had been that way for years. I had to do something as perpetuating the status quo was untenable and unacceptable to me. I needed to figure out how to reach out to a group of folks, that on the surface were comfortably numb in being where they were. They had an extremely important mission, but had been placed on terminal ignore. Rather than try to use brute force and a rah rah rah "coaching" approach i simply sat down with the folks and discussed my philosophy with them. At first they just rolled their eyes and looked at me like, oh lord, her comes another motivational speech. But I did something different. I took myself out of the equation and gave them ownership of the pyramid. I told each of them, that they were the source of strength at the apex of the pyramid. That collectively our pyramids would merge and we would either strengthen its new foundation, or we would continue down the path and eventually the pyramid would falter--to our collective detriment. We had a choice and I gave that choice to each of the folks in that discussion. They all took ownership. Ownership of themselves. Ownership of the unit. Ownership of the organization. Ownership of the change I knew that they wanted to be a part of and contributed to. That rag tag rogue outfit, became the place where everyone wanted to go and become a member of. No kidding. Not because of me, but because of each contributing member at the apex. In the end, it is just an approach.

I am in agreement here. I have scene variations of this in many articles. What i am suggesting here though is what i am hearing and reading is that the educational process tends to force us to utilize our logical brain. Not exercising our right brain. The right brain is a mystical place where things are not neatly tied together. This area of the brain allows us the opportunity to see inside the pyramid you discuss. To see many perspectives. Storytelling and many other right brain activities help us express ourselves in ways that represent chaos to the left brain. I think it is important that we can explore within our own minds the not so connected dots of what if. The inverted pyramid is an awesome view. But as you discussed if chaos visits and we get out of whack we need a mechanism to reorder events and act. The main understanding is that the knowledge that got us here will not get us out, we need new knowledge. I am suggesting a possible method of achieving this end.

The last 5 months have been spent researching these ideas. The employees we are currently meeting seem to be difficult to lead. I have zeroed in on many of the points you subscribe in your posts as what is missing from their paradigm. They are full of knowledge and maybe even skill but they lack the ability to get out of the present and see the vision of the company. Present circumstances overcome future needs. My hope is to learn how to communicate this ideal more effectively. Your triangle thought is a way to visualize the process. Some of the latest research concerning those entering the workforce is mind blowing. The ideals that we based our micro choices on do not exist in the new employee. Our communications of 50 years is falling flat. I believe a quick prefrontal cortex of understanding personal branding will expose you to the new language of the current young generation.

Interesting discussion on triangles. In looking at triangles and leadership I have subscribed to a philosophy on a variation of a triangle, -the Pyramid, throughout my adult life. In looking at the pyramid, whom some would say is a source of strength and energy, I have engaged with folks on what I describe as: "The Upside Down Pyramid Philosophy of Leadership." If one takes your considerations on triangles, and apply them to a pyramid where a human is at the center of any variation of leadership and places the pyramid upside down and on its point (apex) it provides a potentially singular orientation to the essence of its strength. When one puts the pyramid on its apex, it becomes singularly focused on what what provides a firm foundation of strength, cohesiveness and stabilization. For me, all the other inputs and outputs now rely on what will provide necessary stability to keep it upright, balanced and stalwart on a precarious point. The human element. If you remove the source of strength, or that source becomes challenged, weakened, unfocused, disinterested or "ungrounded" then as a result so too does the triangle/pyramid and it becomes unstable. End of story. When I started this approach, I would discuss this philosophy with those whom I lead by putting the palms of my hands together and allowing the hands and fingers to open outward, representing the upside down pyramid. I then put it into a graphic and have used it ever since in various forums. Just a thought.

I would think, we are in trouble now, that the two triangles represent the two different perspectives of present and future self. Keeping these two seperate allows us to have a conversation untethered to present paradigms. The outer triangle possibly should represent our imagination of what could be, right brain activity. By introducing our behaviour to that one we limit discussions to the left brain. The activity in the triangles is one of detaching from logic and exploring the imaginative processes of chaos. Letting go of the present where behaviour is under evaluation and gaining insight from our own right brain, which has no boundaries. Evaluating in this way is similar to how we played on the playground as children. We get to play out many scenarios without thought to outcome. There is no outcome in reality only your meandering thoughts of what could be, potential. Separating these two is important. They are two distinct activities. By entering the future self conversation we enter a world where communications is more picture than words, scenes if you will. If we drag the present into this then the scenes disappear. Logic doesn't work in this world. I am not a studied person of Buddhism but i would speculate that this is the meditative state in which they wish you to enter.

It's great to be back...with my own head attached, delightful Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee! I am the one who is yelling this time dear Lisa Vanderburg "Fear in the Workplace" https://www.bebee.com/producer/@edward-lewellen/fear-in-the-workplace In his buzz Edward explains beautifully the harmful effects of fear. So, my dear friend Lisa I am proud that all through my working life I used fear technique in two occasions when it was the last available resource to try to effect change in behavior.

I remember our team in the USA, only ever won the superbowl once when we were there, under a head coach who was a screaming frothy rabid potty-mouth. Any one of his guys could've crushed him with a flick of a gnarled finger. Guess they had so many hits to the head, yelling was all they responded to? Just saying.....I know you ain't talkin' about that dear Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee :)

I am still brewing the idea in my head. One thing is the first triangle and placing the future potential in the middle. Why not behavior in the middle so that all time dimensions (past, present, future) fall on the corners? Great idea to ponder on.

Harvey Lloyd

I believe i would do a nested triangle. The top one would have past, present and behavior with future potential in the middle. The nested triangle would be Behavior in the middle with experiences, skills and education on the outside legs. Behavior would serves in both. The bonds between the two triangles are inseparable. How you see yourself within the nested triangle and how it may relate to the outer one. Gratification would be a result of good assessment within the nested triangle and insure a better outcome within the top one. Good thoughts.

The triangle of changing behaviors. These are nicely juiced in your comment "I have to include my experiences, past potential gratification and skills as i choose". If I draw a triangle with behaviors in the middle. The three intersection points of the three ribs shall be named" experiences, past potential and chosen skills. How about future expectations my friend? I am still digesting your comment.

My studies have drawn me deep into the word potential. Like protons we, as humans, sit in a super-position. Specifically as we look at future potential. The potential is limitless. But i am the limiting factor. I have to choose from my current super position what i may look like in 5 years. I have to include my experiences, past potential gratification and skills as i choose. I cant be an astronaut to many years on the body and burnt up brain cells that couldn't be retrained. My concern always, is fear choosing or am i? Behavior cant change unless the value you seek changes. If the values you seek are self defeating then the behavior will always be the same. One author spoke that we should find someone we really like in a social lives and admire. Find three things that you like about that person and have a discussion with your future self. Set your sights on those three things. My bet would be behavior changes pretty quickly as now you have quantified a feeling into action.

Amazing thoughts dear Harvey Lloyd. I have already started scratching ideas on my next buzz and your comment here shall be highlighted in the buzz. What you summed up in writing "This doesn't mean something overnight happens but subtly we begin seeing current behaviors based on future results that have changed. If we sense something is hopeless then our behaviour will never change". Those who write on changing behaviors need to swallow this comment. The observant effect in action and is very well explained in this eloquent comment.

Want to add some insight beyond the present/future self dialogue. Whatever comes from the dialogue has to include those within your circle. Be it team, family or community. We cant utilize outcomes that destroys our habitat where we live. SO the conversation would need to include the success of those within our group.

Recent discoveries in quantum mechanics, of which I haven’t a clue except what is stated at my crayons level, describe the double slit experiment of proton duality. If measure/look at it its a particle, if not its a wave. Given rise to the “super position” of protons. They have a position that when viewed it can be either a wave or a particle. Some have posited that when we look at something it changes its position. If we look at a derived future vs a reactive future we change the timeline and outcomes. Merely because we looked at it. So how we look at something changes its state. Ultimately it changes our position and actions. Probably stretching a little here but it would stand to reason that if i look at my future self and posits great things then my behaviors would fall in line with that view. This doesnt mean something overnight happens but subtly we begin seeing current behaviors based on future results that have changed. If we sense something is hopeless then our behaviour will never change. Try for one month to change your behaviour based on a future conversation with self. The conversation must produce value, not consequences. At the end of the month look back over and i believe you would be surprised at what has changed. Remember keep your eyes on the road, when first learning to drive? Your physical self tends to follow your eyes. Talk to future self and set your sights and the body will follow.

I am glad to read your thoughtful comment @Jerry Fletcher. You raised a very relevant point "that often there is an on-field leader that makes the difference in games". I call this shift in leaders because the on-field leader has the leading role during a game. The coach has his biggest role before then.

Dr. Ali, Wonderful thought generating post as usual. I've said before I'm a Midwest borne American football fan that learned of futbol late in life. it took me some time to begin to understand the intricate teamwork of winning teams. My aonly addition to the comments here are that often there is an on-field leader that makes the difference in games. I can only understand world cup mania as a logic exercise even though I live in a city (Portland, OR) That has both Male and Female professional teams. The frenzied fans of futbol and football for that matter are just a little much to take in my view.

I was unfamiliar with the framework. I looked it up and see the four quadrants discussed. Interestingly the framework was to help managers understand where they began in resolving issues/problems. This is somewhat post my thoughts here. We start in a quadrant because we have already had the future conversation of failure. Then we introduce our own narrative what will happen if failure comes. This can get deep here. Our predisposition sets the tone of future self conversations. If i have behaved in such a way that i cant lose, then it is almost certainly a bad conversation with future self. Future self will tell you all the things that are going to happen to you "when" you fail. This is a natural sensation that has gotten out of control. Our brain, i believe genetically, takes all news of status and determines if i am OK first. This is our limbic system doing its job. Unfortunately in the last 50 years we have also attached other meaning to OK. Financial, social and community success. At the low level of survival you might be OK, but in any of the other categories it is catastrophic. Same results. The ability to turn on the frontal lobes during these styled limbic events is a skill. Time is the cure. Given i am in my office or on the phone or some other safe position, i can realize that my brain is alarming but i am OK. But my brain is firing in chaos so i need time to sort out the various items that are firing. Take the time to sort out this barrage before you open your mouth. If you need more info then ask for it and give yourself the time to give your brain all of the information. Your goal here is to reduce the amount of time from barrage to coherent action. This may be wisdom in action:)

Great thoughts and for me stunning ones too. You wrote "I sense with so much branding the fundamentals are all going out the window". Also, you wrote earlier in your comment "Don't drag the chaos back, just observe and learn". Harvey Lloyd- you reminded me of the Cynefin framework that Dave Snowden developed. In the chaotic times we need to act, sense, respond. In the complexity zone we need to probe, sense, respond. For me your comment explains the cynefin beautifully. Respond is the last thing to do in both complex and chaotic times. So is sense in both times. The only difference in chaotic life we start with to sense what happens; in complex times we start with probing to sense and respond.

I am always fascinated by the fact that we are to plan, set goals and execute around the idea. All of this implies some vision of future value. Secondarily if we look at the base fear we contend with, it is always concerning a future outcome. In other words we are always in metaphysical conversation with our future selves. Yet we tell everyone to stop and live in the present. The present is the basis of past future self conversations. I am living the choices i made 5 years ago. The present. The future is Chaos. But we can converse with future self within the chaos and learn things that help us in the present. Don't drag the chaos back, just observe and learn. We know that we behave ourselves into failure or success. We had many paths we could have taken but choose the ones we did take. If we metaphysically walk forward 5 years and discuss with future self who we want to be then, we now can choose paths that take us in that general direction. Scientifically, if we believe that time is another dimension, then it would extend into how we use time. Specifically how it impacts the other dimensions based on our choices. Science projects the future based on present math. Should we not as humans use current math and discuss with the future if the math will get us where we want? Great discussion as always. I sense with so much branding the fundamentals are all going out the window. When we approach crisis there is always folks branding around styles of crisis. 5 steps or programs of success. These are helpful, but only after "you" have began the journey of discussing with future self who you want to be when you grow up. The grow up period lasts about 5 years. Then you have to ask again.

Great thoughts again. Do you agree Harvey Lloyd that it is a balance between the present and the future, a balance between first- results and late-results mindedness? Temperament is a factor in competition. This is described in more detail as we look at individual archetypes. National, local or cultural pressures tend to affect archetypes differently. Do we play to win for our country, or revenge or any other emotional motivation? Or; Do we play as a team within a plan that when executed well is the best possible outcome? Emotions are force to contend with in competition. It can take the team beyond its capabilities or slam it into the ground. Focusing the emotions within the locality of the team only, surrounding execution of each member through trust is the winning formula. I am 1 of 11, my job is to make the other 10 successful. With this emotional trust through the team then i have nothing to prove or seek revenge. You bring forward a great point of coaching and leadership. We may have some differences within the team, but on game day we come together under a common goal, seeking only to lift each other up to success. A great coach here in women's soccer made the statement that at some point skills are no longer the issue, its mental. (Paraphrased.)

The true paradox is between present self and future self. If we talk to future self and see loosing then we change present self based on this fear. If we discuss with future self strategies of success, present self knows what to do outside of fear. This is a complex mode of thinking as we reach forward to predict an outcome, then begin to operate in the present. The basis for this line of thinking is predicated on producing value for self and others. If we sense with future self, value will be lost then we become the drowning victim reaching for the float that isn't there. We should point to future self and discuss the "best" possible outcome and seek to achieve that outcome. Now the present me knows what to do within the frontal lobe and not activate the limbic system of fight or flight. Good coaches know on game day, good leaders also, future self is a collective of various moments and that the moments are out of their control. They have prepped the team and now they need to enhance communications between the players that encourages the execution of the plan. Once the first shot is fired the plan has to stay intact, you (Coach) cant change it. Only the players can adapt and overcome. You cant do it for them. The players become the coach on the field.

Three catching thoughts in your valuable comment Harvey Lloyd. Thought one- "Don't coach practice within the game". A valuable insight and realizing when coaching is not is crucial. The coach here main role is to observe, make changes, adapt and boost moral. Thought two- "You better be able to adapt and overcome your own pride". Swallowing pride is one great attribute of great coaches. To adapt is to change to the new challenges and is a sign of strength. Some leaders unfortunately seem to think otherwise. They would rather keep sinking in the salty water of their pride (even the Dead Sea is salty enough for people to sink") rather than admitting and accepting change. For them, change is a sign of defeat. it is a noise and therefore stay away from adapting. Thought three- " We lost games to teams that should have been easily won, because trust was not present". Not only trust between the leader and "players", but also between the players themselves. Without trust there shall be no exchange of experience an knowledge. The team turn into many sub-teams that lost their holding glue. Thank you my friend for contributing a great comment.

In a previous comment i shared my story of becoming a soccer coach, in license only. There were great coaches of college teams as instructors. Some of the class time was surrounding your points here. Point one was the fact the coaches job was expressed during practice, on game day is where the players expressed themselves, not the coach. Basically they said, observe, lead and understand what the next practice would surround, and by the way shut the hell up if you are not going to boost moral. Don't coach practice within the game. The process of coaching 14 year old girls was a leadership experience. You want to learn leadership coach 14 year old girls in anything. Feedback is instant and brutal. They didn't pull any punches, you lead well or you were told quickly you were not cutting the mustard. You better be able to adapt and overcome your own pride. Amazingly i found as the girls grew older, trust was the issue. Each girl wanted to win. But they didn't trust the other players to do it. We beat teams far superior to us on the days that trust was strong. We lost games to teams that should have been easily won, because trust was not present. Great post as always.

You raise great issues my friend @Debasish. You bring to my attention a huge paradox. I think Harvey Lloyd, whom I miss lately, would agree. The paradox of a star that turns our eyes and minds blind!!! Aristotle did it. Newtonian thinking did it. We follow stars blindly to turn blind sometimes. We forget that they are after all humans and they have their flaws. If we write a review on star performers and how they led to closing our minds from seeing other options and possibilities we shall be surprised by our findings. Is your comment a basis for a new poem? My intuition says Yes.

i wonder, our index finger always having a tendency to point out other flaws, although sometimes point commend too. but can we afford to lose our index finger? we have to accommodate with it as for the sake of an important sense organ, we need to keep all our fingers intact. now the question how much tolerant we are? for the sake of team how long we can endure one's misdemeanor? after all leader is always in singular form. can we afford to have bunch of Einstein, Newton, or other distinguished persona? even in this platform can we get another Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee who always help to enrich us with a modest style? i wonder, which one is more pertinent and glorious to adopt, sacrilege or sacrifice? your insights are always enriching with a unique style of teaching with utter distinction! thank you very much for sharing such extremely pertinent buzz sir.

Thank you for sharing and commenting dear Debasish Majumder, Truly, star performers make the difference; yet they may be the cause of concern. Look how Egypt lost to Saudi Arabia. Mohamed Salah scored a brilliant goal and was selected as The Man of the Match; yet Egypt lost. We can't afford to make an individual more important than a team. Yes, talents may change the result by a solo run and by a magic of creativity. But, his efforts will be eroded by the team and lack of coherence of the team. I attended a training workshop years ago in the USA. An issue that was discussed is if a talent is super, but is rude to teammates would you keep hi? The answer was sacrifice with the talent after losing hope of changing his behavior. Teamwork is the goal.

I personally believe that though soccer is a team game, but there are few legendary performer, who are just rare prodigy and they alone make the difference, despite any formative strategy. whatever the couches and their gestures, when those legends perform, irrespective of coaches, in their eyes only reflect bewilderment! they are true leaders who are endowed with such gift for which they remain as legends. how they improvise in what circumstances is the key which perhaps none could anticipate. even in a soccer team, though there are numerous players, yet, they too believe we have a rare species who alone can make the difference, which no other team may possess and i guess, these prodigies cannot be catered by any coach's traditional dictum. however, wonderful buzz sir Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee! enjoyed read and shared. thank you for the buzz sir.

Absolutely Chris 🐝R Guest and as you highlighted the coach has a big role and he can glue the team members in one "synchronized body". As for your question "Does tech. now drive the human element on the field to an undue extent?"- robots and drones are other examples of how technology is disrupting our lives. Still; these are tools invented by humans and shall not replace their "inventor". Hopefully, not
