Merge to Emerge

The merger of companies and the merger of electron orbitals share many common grounds. Whereas the merger of orbitals lead to successful bonding between two atoms, the merger of two businesses leads to a new and gigantic corporation to emerge, but mostly not to surviving ones that wouldn't fall apart and collapse. Culture problems, opinions and the sudden change in the work environment are among the reasons to blame for these failures.
So, why atoms merge their orbitals so that an emerging molecular entity survives? One simple reason is that it is the loss of self-ego. When orbitals of atoms merge it is not anymore me, it is always: the togetherness spirit that leads surviving new entities. When atomic orbitals merge, their self-ego disappears and the new molecular orbital is the new entity with no tears crying over the past. This is what lacks in business merges that lead only to transient states with many embedded "pockets of memory" so that the past overwhelms the present and soon the promising emerging entity dissolves in every pocket of memory.

What applies to businesses is extensible to our personal interests. This is a key issue that we fail mostly to understand. We might have interests that if they would merge they would lead to the emergence of new us. This is only possible if the "orbitals of Interests" overlap to produce "molecular Interest" with no regret over the past or overriding the old interests over the emerging ones. We have compatible desires, conflicting desires, and neutral desires, charged desires, modest desires and extreme desires as well. How can we merge our desires and interests so that a better desire would emerge and create a new entity for us?

Merging interests purposefully and genuinely is a great way to make progress in life. I believe there are enough stories on beBee that would make all of us realize the value of merging to emerge a new person. I give one example of Margaret Aranda, MD, PhD. Her writings tell us about some of her great sufferings. But she managed to merge her interests for writing and her personal sufferings in creating new business models, ideas and even now writing poetry. Being a researcher and a poet might seem to be conflicting interests; but it is the merging of these two interests that make her write unique poetry. May be one day she would start a training business on writing scientific poetry in partnership with @debasish majumder. I am sure there are many examples of beBee authors who have combined interests in a way that resulted in the emergence of new business ideas. I don't wish to discuss the authors' personal stories, but I do invite them to share them. For example, Lisa Gallagher rich writing invokes the idea of inviting her to share her stories.

On a personal level I suffered (and still do) from my awful handwriting. My love for writing conflicted with me unable to read my own handwriting sometimes! I had conflicts of interests. I learn computer science so as to use the computer as a writing tool long times ago. Rarely now I use a pen to write as the keyboard and voice recording are my main tools for writing. I started a business on computers. I may claim that I succeeded because I have never looked back at my problems of poor handwriting and the new me lasted because the merge of my conflicting interests was genuine.

I was in Turkey last week. I found new spots that filled my heart with new interests such as photography. I discovered new interest because of my failure to capture some great scenery. I am looking now to combine this interest with other interests so that a new molecule would emerge. The journey has begun.

Let beBee be the landscape for meeting and merging of interests with the hope the emerging new ones will stand the test of time. BeBee isn't sharing of profiles or affinities; more is how to make these interests merge and new possibilities emerge accordingly. This is a noble goal that is worthy of pursuing.

Dear Ali Anani IMHO comments are comments, practical wisdom is practical wisdom. When I read your thoughts it is through the lens of practical wisdom. Wisdom has x-ray vision, whereas comments are exactly that, opinions expressed as they have always been expressed since the dawn of newspapers through commentators or commentaries. Comments speak to the world, practical wisdom is meditating on the thinking we observe, to inspire the thinking we think. It is not a Manjit Style but phronesis - something that goes back to the world of ancient Greeks. Happiness comes through virtues is what Aristotle thought about and we just happen to share that virtue. Note how Socrates saw life as questions, this is what I refer to as the good old days :-)

Dear Sara, before Ali Anani introduced me to electron orbitals, I had very little conception about this idea. Where you say "each space acquires its own state" is what most resonates with me. I can equate time with certainty and in that, the flow from uncertainty, but the conception of space as it is in an electron orbital speaks even more to me. We are not predictable orbits in a world manifested with predictable orbits. What you call "moved by" is to me magic. We share moments of magic and we grow in that magic because like electrons our own path is no longer predictable - like magic we can appear at one point, disappear and appear at a totally different point - we are not bound by ideologies, we are not bound by politics, we are not even bound by certainties. The magic are the questions that move us. This is all space. Yet we are also appreciative of time, time sense, time appreciation, time intelligence. So we know our own terra firma, we know how to become grounded in our discovery. We know the time bounded nature of humanity and the eternity of space that is alpha (cosmos) and omega (quantum). It is here where our balance is a dance between the familiarity of time and the open minded wonder of space. We are electrons of intelligence and lovers of life - for we touch our flow through space, cosmos or quantum.

Dear CityVP Manjit. The following is an attempt to verbalise what I experienced when I read your "comment". I apologise for the rough edges. I have often been moved by your writings, be they articles or comments. This one seems to have moved me into the experience of the integration between time and space. In that space I experience memory, mythology and storytelling as manifestations of time. In this way, each space aguires its own state. "The mythology in electron orbitals is the atomic symbol." Thinking is the energy equivalent to the energy in the space of orbitals. In this way, I am thinking that we are born into the space of the unknown and the imitations/images which occur, take place in the flow from uncertainty to certainty.

What makes a genuine difference is sharing personal experiences because they are authentic dear Lisa Gallagher. Your comment prompts me to rethink and rewrite one of my few years old presentation. The core message of it is that we were created from clay, and so we all and I quote you "We are all flawed in one way or another but again, that's part of being human". Absolutely correct you are Lisa. No clay is perfect and we were born from an imperfect clay. It is how we emerge out of an imperfect clay. A lot to ponder on my dear Lisa.

Dear Lisa Gallagher- it was not accidental that I mentioned your name in the buzz because I am aware of your experiences and readiness to share. I felt dizzy while reading this pat of your comment "I detest the term 'mental illness," because that leads others to *believe* the person is crazy....". I share your rejection of this term. Your merged your disinterest with some appalling terms and misunderstanding with your interest in writing stories that made you the person you are. You are a in the bright spot of selected story genre because of your bravery to emerge as a truly strong person. I love your thinking and humanity as reflected for others.

Great buzz Ali Anani! I love the idea of 'merging to emerge.' I will share a secret, I too, have bad handwriting and I'm so thankful for the keyboard! Thanks for mentioning me. I write stories that are diverse but as you know one area that I feel very strong about is an illness that has been stigmatized for way too long- Anxiety Disease and Panic disorder which I have shared that I do suffer from. There are many mental illnesses that people suffer from and a label or a stigma is attached. I detest the term 'mental illness," because that leads others to *believe* the person is crazy if they are not educated about the many disorders that affect the brain. It's hard for me to understand why, when people are afflicted with an illness of the brain or disease that causes physical symptoms, it's an illness, yet those afflicted with an illness that affects much of what can't be seen are called mental patients? I would like to see the every illness classified as such, AN ILLNESS. Labels would begin to disappear and maybe others would become more informed. Maybe one day I will find the right people to collaborate with and we can tackle this issue. I think it would take Physician's to make noise about this along with things like TED Talks, infomercials, and talk shows that focused on the stigma and the illness. A gal can dream, right? Thanks Ali!

My dear Ali Anani, the first problem of any merger is that there is not enough space created for the merger. A merger needs space to emerge, but in mergers and acquisitions that space is filled with certainties, ego, speculations, fear and other inputs which does not allow a new entity to emerge. We also do this here at beBee. I have always created sufficient space for emergence, for I cannot see any other way of emerging in my learning journey. There is nothing linear about my learning journey, it is fully dimensional, abstract and metamorphic. We largely have not learned how to create this space, so we orbit and at the utmost try to be orbital - in that we only orbit - we are only used to circling the Sun or the moon circling the Earth - most are too uncomfortable getting closer to the bizarre and emergent. Create orbitals with plenty of space and then let magic happen - this is who I am - the only form of atomic orbital that I know. My favourite expression from Jiddu Krishnamurti is that the "observer is the observed". In terms of emergence, let it be.(bee).

Sara Jacobovici- memory and communications is the...and I am using words which you suggested for my book title...the success formula. Absolutely, and I find your two comments of amazing values. You know I avoided using the word fractal- from small individual interests scaling up to societal and corporations interests the success formula is the same, or the scaling factor is the same: memory and communications. Memory so that it is not going to be a random walk and communication so that the scaling rules be the same.

Part 2/2 Communication: Everything, at all levels, atomic and sub-atomic vibrates. This vibration is a form of communication. Merging of atoms takes place as a result of what has been communicated. Failure of business merges is a direct result of failure in communication; before, during and after the merge. You say and ask, "We have compatible desires, conflicting desires, and neutral desires, charged desires, modest desires and extreme desires as well. How can we merge our desires and interests so that a better desire would emerge and create a new entity for us?" My answer would be; we do these through communication. Leaders, current and future, need to communicate to the "corporate body" that the mutual interests of its needs and growth will be addressed by the merge and to put in place a mechanism of exchange of ideas. But not linearally "across the board", rather by mimicing the atomic orbital, we communicate "spherically".

Your description is right on. Often there is the added component of fear of the unknown and a reluctance to let go of the familiar. What memory exists in the atomic processes of merging? The process must have an embedded memory of movement and engagement. Maybe that is what is lacking in business; if there isn't an embedded memory of the foundation of the company, its vision, its projected growth, then there is disengagement in the process rather than the natural process of engagement to emerge from the merge.

Engaged performers may lose heart Apply the Hawthorne Effect The Hawthorne effect refers to a phenomenon in which employees change their behavior as a result of showing them your interest and appreciation. I wonder here if we have the Interest Effect in that interests change their course and work better if merged properly and so that new interests emerge and stay.

Yes, business mergers fail due to many reasons with culture standing as a prime reason dear Qamar Ali Khan. I wanted to highlight here the value of merging our interests and doing what you wrote " a careful pre-merger analysis is the key to assure the success or otherwise of a merger". I also add intentions because if self-ego prevails mergers fail.

A fascinating post Dear Ali Anani! The power of merger is absolutely magnificent. The only condition is the compatibility of the objects, being merged, with each other. Everything cannot be merged with each other. Sometimes, we misjudge and miscalculate the merger and its process. That might also be the cause of failure. In scientific labs, such mergers are tested in a very calculated way and in a controlled environment, and even then, all atomic or cellular mergers do not achieve the desired result. In my personal opinion, a careful pre-merger analysis is the key to assure the success or otherwise of a merger.
