While reading the buzz titled “All Transactions Will Soon Be Automated On The Blockchain” by Daniel Kay I paused on his writing “The Blockchain will make companies run more efficiently and also provide a better user experience but this comes at the cost of jobs”. So, there is a new trend to cut jobs arising from technological advancement. In driverless- cars the same trend is also expected to cut jobs drastically such as less need for spare parts, maintenance and less accidents. This shall in turn affect insurance companies. Cutting jobs is a serious issue because people need sometime to grasp new technologies before they may find a “job niche” or “market-niche”. No sooner they job-seekers have mastered a new technology before a new technology is announced. It is a hard pursuit.

The business trends are affected to a large scale by technological advancements. We don’t wish to lag before a new trend arrives. How easy is it to spot trends before they happen? What makes prediction a complex issue is the interference of many sectors because on one major disruptive trend and spill-over effect is bound to take place. Another example is working from home and the redefinition of work and the shrinkage of spaces of offices and the introduction of flexible work hours. Another major shift is in marketing where customers prefer to experience what they want, and quality is not anymore, the determining factor. Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence are becoming the name of the game accordingly. The rise of Social Advertising is becoming more important than any other form of advertising.

One definite trend is the micro trend. Examples include micro-housing, micro-influencers, micro-nutrients and micro-second. I wish here to suggest the idea of “The Long-Tail Distribution of Trends”. Big trends seem to create waves of smaller trends. Disruptive trends are few like major earthquakes; however, their “daughter trends” between more than few macro-trends and many micro-trends provide new opportunities.

Very few disruptive trends

Many macro-trends

Geeat numbers of micro-trends.

Trends Popularity

I believe there are great opportunities for businesses and start-ups in the long-tail by finding niche opportunities before others are awaken to them. There are many examples to support this idea. Disruptive technologies surface out micro-trends that aren’t very clear except the observant senses. It is the age of spotting micro-trends that shall make many businesses come out of the disruption as victorious.

Are you in the travel business- what are then the emerging opportunities that are worthy of capturing? How do you benefit from the blurred line dividing the travel for business and for pleasure? How to combine them? This idea of combination is worthy. Deciding whether to have pancakes or waffles usually results in a battle between kids or adults, so the 'PanWaffle' has been created to help satisfy everyone. Turning the tension of making into a product that meets all choices is a good example of a micro-trend that should grow in popularity.

It is the age of micro-trends and the winning businesses are those businesses that can spot them first and then popularize them.

This is a great comment and you are correct . The z- generation (those born as of 1998) are also vastly changing the world of business. Many studies findings are in line with your comment. This generation believes in social learning, social marketing and social belonging. This generation shall surely be the most influential people who will change the way we do business tomorrow.

There is a big difference between what I like and what the majority of the people like. You, and I, are not interested in video games. but what percentage of people we represent? Same applies to PanWaffle. You know about the crowd effect and that you can stand away from it is admirable. But again how many people do the same?

You have sharp senses Louise Smith. People with sharp senses tend to rely on their senses than anything else. I believe you are living a simple life, but not too simple because you are leading a natural life. The list of your hobbies tells a lot about your admirable characters. Your senses help you to proceed i a direction that serves you without need for technology or costly solutions. There is a tendency to depend less on our senses and this evident on the times people tend to spend on phone or playing games. No wonder many bookshops are closing.

2. That's not to say I am against new technology - I am not. But it has to be practical, have a real purpose & not cost increasingly more money. I would love to be able to invent useful apps or be in a start up. As long as these endeavours are to fulfill a real need niche. I regard a PanWaffle as an advertising stunt, a corruption of 2 separate delicious breakfasts, a sign that parents can't teach their children to negotiate, take turns or share. I am a purist in lots of ways as if integrity is constantly degraded so will the simple pleasures of life & the society to which they belong.

Louise Smith

1. I am a very practical person. I like to cook, sew clothes & garden to grow food & flowers. I like to read a book made of real paper. I like to hear music from a real instrument not a digital composition. I like to recycle things & reinvent them for different purposes. I like to talk to people f2f & establish an ongoing relationship. My mobile phone & computer are like my car - a means to get from A to B. I don't play any computer games & probably never will. Maybe I am a dinosaur but I am happy having as simple a life as I can. I don't really understand the purpose of most apps I have looked at. They often seem over-simplistic - a storage system for information that I keep in my mind without difficulty. They seem to compile details which can generate statistics. I don't want my life to be treated like this. I don't want to become a statistic. Another modern phenomena is data. Everything I could do easily before data, is getting hard to do without data. Like downloading data temporarily or permanently in the guise of songs, TV, research information, transport timetables, restaurant bookings, webinars, online courses, banking, bill paying, Library borrowing, GPS, scanning groceries after each shop, buying absolutely anything online ....... Data is expensive & will only get more so. I don't want to keep paying for data for things I have used in my lifetime before digital data existed.

as would language teaching if the women wanted to connect f2f instead of using a digital or a human translator For women it may be important to be able to communicate with not just the business associates but to see how people live first hand in the unfamiliar culture.

I have no difference with you. Even creativity improves skills. They work together. The creative mind and the observant eye that noticed how to make photographs look better and more effective by placing objects in their right places allowed others to improve their photography skills as well.

- spot on and as light and darkness co-exist so are opportunities and threats. If opportunities are light then threats are darkness and they live together. It is creativity that makes use of opportunities and turn threats to opportunities. There is no day without night and there is no opportunity with no threat.

With photography we can develop a specific skill-set, but with a way of seeing the challenge is to develop an adaptive mindset. The ability to adapt is not discipline specific, creativity as a kind of metanoia is learning to see - which only a few can rise to though I do think the atoms of creativity are within us all, the exercising of what is possible as someone transforming that latent creative potential, that is the road less traveled.

CityVP 🐝 Manjit- I agree with you with a cautious note. Yes, the individual creativity will have a great impact on businesses and even on mega-businesses. I give one example of visual photography. People trust amateur photographers more the news agency. An amateur photographer has the means to shoot photographers on a mobile phone and publish it without filtering or improvement as a crude one. People will trust the photographer more than new agencies because they are accused of faking the news. If a photographer is lucky enough while walking to witness an accident and take an effective, even crude, photograph he may become famous. But to make the photo impacting the photographer has to have certain knowledge in photography such as awareness of the 1/3 Rule in which the photo is divided into three equal parts horizontally and vertically and that his important elements of the photograph be placed at the crossing lines opposite to each other. It is both curiosity and skills working together. The other conditional if is the need for the individual to capture an emerging trend such as the trend of trusting amateur photographers than news agencies. Most often than not this requires advanced skills, which many not be available for the individuals. However; there is much more hope for the creative individual than any time before. To this I fully agree.

While Harvey has touched on creation, the importance of creativity involves the ability to look at these emerging discontinuities with a different perspective. In the past the artist has suffered in an economy which was tailor made for the industrialist. In the future as Marshall McLuhan actually pointed out many decades ago, in the Electric Age we observe the artists as the seer of the future. While a 21st Century "Technological Seer" does not have powers of divination, they do have the ability to think differently and generate creative outcomes that are individually relevant. I actually view this as more of an individual dimension than a social dynamic. I do agree with Harvey that the answers we need are within us, but we need to think creatively in order to access this.

#16 overcoming and adapting was near recent mantra that was reasonable to expect as changed happened. Like all seasoned people I knew in the past 👴🏼 I repeating the same message. This time is different. Student loan debt, regulations and AI presenting reduced jobs may be the perfect storm that each generation predicts but hasn’t come true Caution at a minimum is required The tension is rising and the question is will it find relief? I believe for the USA another major issue is present that wasn’t here last generation. The family structure has changed and not as stable All points to ponder while engaging in libations

I honestly need to meet with you Bill King for you do turn theories into practice with great examples. I would say there might be a macro-trend for women worldwide to prove their social value and competence to the world. Now, to scale down the trend we may ask in which country? If we choose China your example will be perfect. In which sector? Traveling, or becoming entrepreneurs, women in China as leaders, and we could ask many more questions. The end result shall be many micro-trends. Recently, the women in The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have been allowed to drive and to become entrepreneurs. What opportunities these changes provide. Business is first of all about asking the right questions.

What a great example this is Bill King. You remind me of the photoacoustic technique, which I was one of the early adopters. This is a technique to hear a trapped dark object with light of varying wavelengths to heat the dark sample, which in turn heats the air trapped below it. We draw the graph between light wavelength and the generated sound coming from the heated trapped air. has its graph print. This is a non-destructive technique. It was later developed to take air samples from exhale air of patients to identify =if air has any of volatile such as acetone. This way one part in a billion can be detected. Yes, new technologies create new possibilities.

Yes, I don't question this Jerry Fletcher. I wonder if Freud were still living he would change the words fittest to another one to reflect the incredible rate of having to adapt. Like a windmill we design it to take preferentially one wind direction for if the wind keeps changing its direction the wind turbine would change its rotation rapidly. The result is the collapse of the turbine.

In my view, only the adaptable will survive. There is no longer a single path way to being employed for an extended period of time. Even in the construction trades the tools keep changing forcing continuous learning. What we are seeing is nature's way...survival of the fittest.

Ali Anani

Thank you for your profound comment dear Tausif Mundrawala. Sometimes, as in the case in your story, we may need to sacrifice few jobs for a company to survive and employ fewer number of people. We have to notice here that the definition of work has changed from the place you go to work to the place where you get your work done. It could be home and I envisage an expansion on the number of people working at home. This way we may have stronger family ties. But again, working from home requires alertness to the new possibilities. Who shall provide training on how to do AI to spot emerging opportunities for people working at home? What the influence would be on society? How many people will venture? Many questions remain open.

I agree fully Harvey Lloyd. I f we use the human body as a metaphor for the society then what applies to the human body applies also to the human societies. If anything goes wrong with any organ of the human body all the body shall suffer physically and spiritually. Yes, to need to restore the balance of human societies if they are to be healthy. The problem of one individual shall affect the health of the community and the society as a whole. Therefore, I am in agreement with you "I have always determined that its OK to take a micro viewpoint, as long as you relies it has to survive as it pulls out to the macro environment". It is very easy to lose the balance of human societies and we need to be aware of this fact.

Pascal Derrien

Tools vs people value it has happened before and it will probably create new jobs if the trend become a fact .Are those things a breakthrough or a mere shift in the human compass that's the essential question to me as we probably have not changed that much when it comes to the very core of our DNA Trends are just that ....trends 🤔

I'm not to the point of suggesting us to stop,.....YET. But do believe that to answer both questions, we have to relook at technology, not from AI, cost savings or profits, but within the human paradigm. Humans need a social group to create within, secondarily this creation must have perceived value. Within self and the community. Our motivation for profits to benefit humanity has driven off a cliff. Our capitalism should be looking at the efficacy of socioeconomic focus. I am not referring to socialism but rather that the efforts of creation should benefit the human condition. This is a very idealistic world view. Humans will always look to tune things in their bias, no one is immune. What is the efficacy of Facebook? Don't shoot the questioner:) I have always determined that its OK to take a micro viewpoint, as long as you relies it has to survive as it pulls out to the macro environment. Polarization begins when we get lots of folks hung up in the micro view without being able too deliberate across the macro. We see this within the extremes of media presentations. I raise these questions only to state that future generations will have to serve in the environment we leave behind. Will Automation at any level benefit this next group? Either answer is acceptable. But the answer must be met with more than philosophical opinions. With either answer action is required and the journey must begin.

Your comments sent my mind brewing. I wonder Harvey Lloyd if the value of community would change for us as humans. Dislodging from community will also bring fear for we then lack the sense of community protection. If people become fearful what would happen next? Reading your line "I fully admit that maybe i have taken to micro a view of the technology and mankind's adaptability" forces me to pause. If trend are fractal and follow a power law would it the micro-view be simply a smaller picture of the self-similar structure? Are micro-views simple a scale down of the macro-views? I have to think deeper.

Hugely relevant comment Harvey Lloyd. AI and Augmented Reality (AR) are causing great disruption to our habits, social network, job openings and the list goes on. Is there a way to stop this trend? I believe it is unstoppable and all what we can hope for is adapting to the new realities. We tend to see the threats, but there is no threat without an opportunity. I fully agree with you that the life time of a micro-trend falls between 2-3 years and this requires us to keep looking for fresh opportunities. As for community support this is a lasting need. For a community to provide support it has to have cohesion within. I recall in Jordan how close neighbors were. Not anymore. Hardly you find a neighbor talking to his neighbor. More, in families they are mostly busy scrolling their mobile phones. It is a race and we have to move faster just to keep our current position. The death of time is bringing so many new micro-trends. What shall glue us together?

Harvey Lloyd

Continued from 4. I also sense that while AI is being presented on the media front as the next big thing in our evolution. Alternatively i believe e behind the curtain it represents the cost savings of not having to deal with the very difficult landscape humans present when they group. AI doesn't have a gender, nationality, religious belief or labor laws. We can actaully repaint, commandeer and discriminate across brands of AI without lawsuits or other social maladies that bring harm to our brands. Humans will have difficulty evolving into a greater humanity without the opportunity to struggle through groups both positive and negative. Communities and "jobs" is where we create material value and share our beliefs in action. I fully admit that maybe i have taken to micro a view of the technology and mankind's adaptability. This discussion, you have provided a platform for, Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee is a discussion that deserves all measure of thought.

Harvey Lloyd

منذ 6 سنوات #4

You offer some insight to success within a very dynamic paradigm in which we find ourselves. If i could climb a little deep into the motivation for AI and expose a debate of the necessity for such digital of things for humans. Your observations point us towards our ability to adapt to how digits impact our ability to self preserve. In this adaptation needs are being met by niche players. If the niche grows then AI becomes an answer to the expense of the need. There was a time when automobiles were a niche. So this brings us to the question, what is the motivation and end game of AI? On one side we have AI taking Jobs and the other we have the nirvana outcome of "time to do what we really enjoy". If we can look back a few decades we find that communities were all self supporting and needed each to survive. If we can broaden the definition of AI to include modern conveniences also we can see where AI has taken us from community dynamics to individual. The need of the community has been removed within the material aspects of existence. If AI is to provide the time/happiness while machines work and we pontificate, then we will also have to address the need for community support, engagement and belonging. My fear is that with each AI advancement within in workforce, the workforce is becoming a commodity. The advent of the niches of success are based on fee for service models that tend to lack commitment for the long term. Leaving the provider with a constant effort in loading the conveyor with more and more clients as those fall off the rear. To demonstrate my bias i sense that AI is the pot of water the temperature is slowly being turned up on humanity.
