Punishing the Innocent

Punishing the Innocent

7ab68356.jpg

We live in complex societies that are drifting towards chaos. In complex systems we have what we call “emergent causes” of complexity that produced drastic societal effects. Emergent means they weren’t predicted and emerged suddenly. We assume the causes and try to eliminate their effects only with the causes increasing because they weren’t addressed. The result is chaos of every person seeking his/her own well. The social structure is unstable and we need to self-organize our thinking into new structures. One example is punishment and the cure for it. The laws of punishment need to be addressed and the whole law system may need new thinking. Who is responsible for the misconducts is perplexing because factors interact and it is difficult to isolate s cause to cure it.

We are part of nature. What we find in plants and animals extends to humans. Why some plants are aggressive? Why some animals are overly aggressive? Why humans are showing increasing aggressive behaviors? Is there a common line of causes among them? It is the chemistry that controls the behavior that is disturbed by several factors that cause all species to develop aggressive behaviors.

Let me explain by examples.

It has been known for some time that, irrespective of the pathogen, the immune system uses common mechanisms of defense and clearance in plants, animals and humans.

Animal behaviors maybe affected by sensing the vibrations of incoming danger. For example, spiders feel the vibrations of a foreign species entering its web and become aggressive. Humans are indifferent. Humans have chemicals in their brains that sense the danger. A chemical known as serotonin helps human in building acceptable social behaviors and reducing aggression. So, what happens if we reduce this chemical in our brains? We shall notice a tendency in aggression. This is what we are doing humans in several ways including:

· Industrial Activities- production of chemicals from so many industrial activities that deteriorate the social health. These chemicals may act as endocrine disruptors. Endocrine is made up of glands that secrete hormones which act as regulators for cells and organs. Research indicates that endocrine disruptors are likely contributors to neurobehavioral deficits and disability, including autistic disorders. Toxic chemicals are found in household products. These chemicals affect our bodies and in turn affecting their behaviors. Are we the prey of our predating activities?

· Poor Diet may result in aggressive behaviors- recent research findings established that food maybe deprived from the serotonin because it is not produced in sufficient quantities because the food we take is poor or deprived of the components that produce this quieting-chemical. Our brains are affected by what we eat. Poor diet may result in aggressive behaviors. Yet; we rush to punish the aggressor while the causes remain intact. This is a losing battle and shall only lead to more aggression. WE deal with the effect, but not the possible emergent causes that resulted from the interactions of many factors.

· Senses Reasons- Yes, humans’ behaviors is affected by our senses. Chemosignals are chemicals that signal to our brains of something happening. This is a topic that aroused my attention upon reading “Fruit flies release a distinct chemical substance – an aggression pheromone – when provoked. In humans, personality traits related to aggression and dominance can be detected by smelling individual body odor, while competitive behavior has been seen to produce fear-inducing chemosignals”. Sometimes, our behaviors are influenced greatly by small volatile chemicals. We experience this when we see a child’s tears because these tears contain chemosignals.

· Environmental Factors- Children living in agricultural areas with poor health were found to have different levels of chemosignals in their brains than the fortunate kids who afforded to eat well

I want to say that human activities are affecting the chemicals in our brains. Big question remains- if an aggressor commits a crime and analysis established that because of deficiencies of certain chemicals in their bodies they became aggressive. Is it their fault? With children living in countries like Syria, Iran and Iraq and other countries exposed to so many chemicals that deteriorate the chemical balance of their brains combined with nasty smells and poor nutrition and increased stress are they going to be responsible for their acts when they grow up? Do we need to change our view to blame the innocent and leave the real aggressors?

Social capital is eroded because we punish the innocent.

Nothing in nature takes more than it needs, but humans store up for seasons leaving others to suffer. We have so much food waste and we allow people to starve. We make very primitive decisions in a very advanced period of time.

Tight mindset is the key factor to transform information to knowledge. I agree with you Zacharias \ud83d\udc1d Voulgaris.Piling information or storing it is only of value if we have the right mindset to make this information of use.Piling information while holding false assumptions and concepts will mot change info to knowledge. In fact, iy could create an adverse effect.

@Fay Vietmeier & Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee, indeed it's information we pass to others though usually it transforms itself to knowledge once internalized. However, we often fail to pass on an equally important thing (or perhaps even more important): understanding and mental maturity. A digital analog to information in the computer world is data so the whole process is akin to downloading lots of data to a computer that doesn't have the right software to use it properly. That's why in DS I put a lot of emphasis in developing the right mindset towards the field, not just accumulating methods, information, and techniques. That's my two cents on the topic.

Fay Vietmeier The paradox is that we pass what we call information regardless whether it is true, false, positive or negative or whatever. Worse, if information is based on false sources such as rumors. Worst, is that the longer we "export" wrong information from generation to generation. The longer we own them, the stronger we defend them. History is full of examples that people believed in something that turns out false and still we defend them. Generations may turn info into knowledge and these generations are blessed because they give the world knowledge and help the next generations.

Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee Edward Lewellen (part 2) On “Time binding” this excellent point by Ralph E. Kenyon Jr Korzybski characterized mankind as a time-binding class of life because, he claimed, "knowledge" increased as an exponential rate though the use of language passing messages from generation to generation. (Manhood of Humanity, p.20, Science and Sanity, p. 364) Korzybski was flat wrong on this point. It is not "knowledge" that is passed from generation to generation but "information". "Knowledge" is the ability to use information, and that must be learned anew by members of each generation. "Information", however, does not differentiate between "good" and "bad", between "correct" and "wrong", between "true" and "false". In the context of time-binding and exponential growth, "information" includes misinformation, false theories, speculations, fiction, and anything that can be expressed in symbols. The exponential growth includes all the trash, wrong information, and everything else that has been expressed. It's possible to see individuals holding and using theories that have been disconfirmed, but continue to be passed from generation to generation. https://www.xenodochy.org/gs/timebind.html

Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee Edward Lewellen Edward~ What rich insight you offer As I read the thought that occurred to me is that “more is caught than taught” Seeing Social media as a “chemical” and the HUGE shift its application has brought to the world ... “Before the prevalence of Social Media, mankind had to go to great lengths to spread ideologies. When they did, people knew directly whom to attribute the ideologies, so there was responsibility and consequences for spreading ideologies.” ... “Time-binding” In its positive form, it just means that each successive generation learns from the previous generation and passes the learnings on to future generations. ... But it can be negative, as well. The hurts past generations have suffered are passed on to the current and future generations. The passing on of “hurts” from generation to generation makes me think of the “fractal state of humanity” (fractal from Latin “broken”) We are “broken” beings ... broken parents pass on to the next generation the same state of “brokenness” they were born into The Fractal State of Humanity https://www.bebee.com/producer/@fay-vietmeier-pennsylvania/the-fractal-state-of-humanity-the-hidden-forces-at-work-for-you-against-you (part 1)

Again, I am in full agreement with your thoughts here my good friend Edward Lewellen What you say is in keeping with the butterfly effect. The 7% of people even though they are minority they may cause much than the even intended. This is because humans smell their "signals" and get worried and respond to their senses. Animals and plants are the same as they react when their pheromones secrete chemicals to alert the plant'animal to the possible coming danger. We humans react to bad news much more than we do to good news. This is the famous Negativity Bias in action. So, I am again agreeing with all your thoughts here.

Dear friend Edward Lewellen So great to read a comment by you after a while. It is a worthy wait as you enrich these discussions with deep thoughts. The two main points in your comment are: "However, I also believe that what we are seeing in society today is the 'chemical' of Social Media" A second is what is called "Time Binding". I first read your second thought as "Time bonding and not binding". However; it is not a bad idea as the longer we believe in something for many reasons such as inheriting it we become bound to it and we feel we "Own" it and so we protect it. You reveal a hugely-important point in that those long-inherited thoughts are being eroded and whom defenders find their dominance eaten. There is an emerging social struggle. If those people with dominance start to lose dominance they maybe tempted to use force to defend their dominance. What comes after using force in repeating historical social cycles? It initiates the cycle of chaos and social-restructuring.The coming times are testing times. Great thoughts yours are my friend.

Fay Vietmeier My friend- you aren't going outside the line, but giving different examples that extend the domain of the post. My concern is yours. The household chemicals such as detergents and pesticides are "hiding criminals" as their chemicals may hurt our brains. There are enough researches who warn fro the excessive exposure to detergents and the like. Who get hurt mostly? It is the children because their brains haven't developed yet. The other examples you give such as aborted babies highlight the declining value of humans and punishing the innocent and leaving out the criminal. It is a very sad situation.

I recognize this is a sensitive issue and my intent is not to incite rather to express the innocence of a child in the womb who has no voice. I recognize that is off topic and I’m drifting from my lane ... as I have a tendency to go outside the “lines” Another example is theft ... innocent honest, hard-working citizens pay for this 3) I believe the HUGE increase in mental health issues in recent decades related to 2 factors: a) The HUGE increase of chemicals in our food chain & HUGE increase in use of drugs (I mean pharma) ... increased RELIANCE on drugs to cure ... which they rarely do ... but many of these drugs do create ADDICTS and that is the stated mission of many pharmaceutical giants: To create “life-long consumers” of their DRUGS As subtle as the devil can be, in some things ... his truth is simple & very clear Case in point: While recently visiting a friend in a mental health hospital (who suffers from bi-polar disorder) I was ask while signing in “which consumer” are you here to Wal-ah and cha-ching !!!

#18 #21 When we look at the paradigms you suggest exist we can easily look upstream to attempt to find motivation. I believe almost across the board you can find a duality in design. Personal goals and public service. In capitalism this would be expected. But in public service it is a monster. A beast whereby each party to the solution is grappling for position at the table to feast on the power that comes with the solution. This is not the design of public service. The answer is and always be, allowing the local community to solve its own issues. Support the community, build a country. Support the country and build tyranny. In supporting the community though power is diverse and to spread out to take advantage of by brokers. Power likes to consolidate itself, its a natural underpinning of the human dynamic. But consolidated power in the wrong place hurts the community. I like the community aspect of government, you can actively participate. Its not without its own issues but the issues are owned by the community. Not far out of reach of Joe citizen.

"What is a GOOD human? Can we reach a definition that is agreeable to all? This is the first step so that we may have a goal that is owned by all." This statement has jumped clear off the page and right into my consciousness...An excellent question! Perhaps we can take a closer look at what may be a major contributing factor in the creation of the 'malignant mindset'...to borrow a term from the resident neurosurgeon Ian Weinberg... More and more research keeps emerging on the 'gut/brain connection and its influence on our health. The neurotransmitters in our brains can be produced by the bacteria that resides in our 'gut'...Hence, restoring the health of the microbiome heavily influences the health of the brain. When the delicate balance of healthy bacteria in the gut is thrown off by poor eating habits and/or medications such as antibiotics, it manifests myriad 'mood disorders' that contribute to the aggressive behavior we see in those with mental illness. Many of these folks are misdiagnosed and medicated mercilessly, spawning all kinds serious mental/physical symptoms as a side effect. For a very 'unlucky lot'...there is also the possibility of a 'genetic pre-disposition'... .I found this interview with Professor Bill Sullivan of Indiana University School of Medicine fascinating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2ofL0HvBME

Dear Jerry Fletcher- you aren't late to the party because I published this post hours ago. I like the paradoxes you mention. Indeed, humans are complex being and predicting their behaviors is like predicting weather. Maybe the predictions are correct for the next few days, but for longer times it is just accidental if our predictions prove right.

Jerry Fletcher

Dr. Ali, Sorry to be late to the party. I've been traveling and picked up a nasty cold. this whole discussion takes me back to my curiosity about the psychological underpinnings of things. the one lesson that stands out starkly in all I studied is that we have no ability to see into another's mind. We can see their behavior but all else is conjecture. Politicians claim to build jobs. They don't. We suspect entrepreneurs of being in it only for the money. They aren't. Humans are complex beasts that go astray when they ascribe or try to control motivation. As you point out, what happens may not be happening for the reasons we believe. And so it goes.

Many ideas as chemicals are have two faces- one face is good that may turn bad if exceeded beyond a limit. Our societies like here in the Middle East are living in fear for years. Fear of losing jobs, of escalating prices and taxes, of increasing poverty, of being killed by a bomb or rocket or even war chemicals, of being threatened by Corona and many more life-threatening conflicts. Not only Adrenaline, but also by a host of other chemical disorders that make people behave chaotically. ,

"Again a paradoxical position that sanity would rule out the process. We have found the cure but it kills the patient reasoning seems so barbaric". In a society with big voids- and I mean in income, education levels, amusement, water quality or whatever is bound to break down. Big voids weaken the social structure and most policies make them even bigger. This is a paradox that amazes me in a negative way..Policy-makers keep saying they want to address the poverty of the big voids, but adopt policies that create an adverse effect. I believe one core reason is only thinking of the immediate effects and leaving out the mid-term ones. We treat the symptoms with over-doze that results in killing the patient.

Harvey Lloyd

Your opening paragraph is quite amazing. Social structure and other words that describe a society that needs to be "organized" are words that tell us some metaphysical propositions need to be fundamental. The challenge is always taking these words down to what a group thinks is social correct. These thoughts come in two paradigms. What is a human? How do we organize humanity around that answer? If we declare that a human is a sentient being with inalienable rights of existence, then metaphysical underpinnings would support this definition. Support it in all aspects of existence. Laws would be written when the metaphysical properties of one is violated by another. But even in this, the violator never loses their own inalienable rights, they are not reduced to less than human. Self organizing implies that we can organize around something shared. What would that be? Nature organizes around survival of the fittest. Humans have a conscious and this organizational structure offends us. So then we must decide as humans what structure to place at the center of our paradigm for all to adopt. This is no easy task. We were attached to the Christian faith in the western worlds for centuries. This had its good and bad consequences. Now we have detached from that and we are struggling to see who will own the new morality. Seems everyone with a microphone and a audience has the answer, but no coalescing into a mainstream concept. Mainly because the person benifits from owning the morality. It is divisive.

Awesome concept, we have to clean up our own messes. This would reinstall the value of honor and integrity. I have witnessed Pandora's box on many occasions. I might have been the one that opened it:). It is an ugly box and once opened the destruction must take its course. I believe we are experiencing this phenomena in the US right now. I have watched folks on the same side of the isle decimate one another just to gain a vote. The honor and integrity paradigm has been cast aside in the name of "care". Pick your group. With just a little thinking it never quite settles when we save one group by destroying another. Each group has its problems that need to be sorted, but once Pandora's shows up everyone dies. But each group thinks they can wield the power. Pandora is your friend until the other half is dead. Then she splits the group in half again. This half life is short. Then once complete Pandora climbs back in the box until someone dares open it again. The 1st, 2nd and 5th amendments are under attack by Pandora. She is laying at the feet of many the power they can have in creating nirvana through reducing these basic understandings to useless.. Those with some historical understanding realize Pandora's presence. She will not get back in her box until some dramatic event occurs and draws folks into the clear and she is exposed.

Adrenaline is our chemical. I am afraid though it offers a complex paradox in how we experience it in others. Given a persons belief system or "Shadow" the adrenaline can manifest itself quite differently in each of us. Adrenaline runs contrary to our thinking brain. It states we must act before being acted on, but tension exists in the brain while we think about what if we are wrong? If we start off with a belief that each life is special and that i am to serve my fellow human the tension is great when we experience adrenaline. If we start off that life is suppose to be fair and just then adrenaline becomes a tool of justice. This form of justice is not so blind but rather determined. The military has to deal with these diverse world views. They need troops that can win over adrenaline through positive experiences and thinking. They need troops that are rational. Not trigger happy and not docile. But reasonable thinking individuals that can execute around general orders. These troops attend a boot camp where the world view is aligned into a basic set of values and focus. This is not necessarily good or bad, but demonstrates that the social construct needs to have some form of underpinning where we can determine right from wrong.

I love that you mention 'Pandora's Box' here Harvey Lloyd...All the ills of the world released when we lift that lid... Humans tend to explore 'physical reality' with a sense of fear...Of other Nations, races, religions and each other quite frankly. It would be interesting if we all embodied a more 'metaphysical mindset' of reality and considered the very 'real' possibility that even after we leave this earth, we are all STILL responsible for our choices and the effect they've had on not only ourselves but also the environment. Perhaps if we became acutely aware that we will be back to clean up the mess we've made, our choices would be vastly different.

There is one concept that i believe we have lost sight. The impoverished will always be with us. This implies both mentally and physically. This is not a license to ignore the impoverished. But rather a fundamental concept of fighting to remove this limiting belief and environment while realizing that people make choices. They are individuals. In the US we have weaponized the "impoverished", groups, politicians and other organizations are going on crusades to save these impoverished folks while blaming and destroying the very system that can help them. Again a paradoxical position that sanity would rule out the process. We have found the cure but it kills the patient reasoning seems so barbaric. We all have enough blame to share but blaming does not fix the issues. Yesterday we did do something that sounded good and now we know its not. Lets re-access and make another choice. We seem to following the law of subtraction. If we can subtract all that is bad, nirvana will appear. Many leaders thought that they could subtract their way to success. It never comes out well. Great post and thought provoking.

had replied to your first comment before I read your second and powerful one. You caught my attention right from the first line "Much like the leader of a pack defending it's dominate role, traits of good and bad are all sidelined until they win or lose in holding their position". You remind me of animals who protect their territory and fight for their rights to be the only ones there. You wrote later "By weakness i mean those areas we tend to shy away from are all of a sudden forcefully placed in front of us and we lack any experience in managing these traits in ourselves. Our immediate response is kill (Metaphor) the cause of exposure". I am saying WOW because this part I left out from the post to keep it short. I was going to discuss the emerging and accelerating changes in our lives. Not only we fear being forced to change, but also changes that surprise us and emerge from nowhere. Such changes require calm thinking and this negates fearful minds. Emergent changes signal the onset of chaos and act as alarming signals. Either we get more scared by these signals, or we think calmly.and fast enough. I am intending to cover this issue in a post soon.

Instead of emptying the box, we are filling it with what makes the issue more complicated. I mentioned you in my previous comment because of the quote I presented in the post "“Fruit flies release a distinct chemical substance – an aggression pheromone – when provoked. In humans, personality traits related to aggression and dominance can be detected by smelling individual body odor, while competitive behavior has been seen to produce fear-inducing chemosignals”. This is in perfect coordination with your comment.

As to the personality traits involvement it is a hole lot less clear their impact when we have opened up the shadow in this way. Much like the leader of a pack defending it's dominate role, traits of good and bad are all sidelined until they win or lose in holding their position. One point i can state within the personality traits is our weaknesses, within character get energized and engaged within the fight or flight environment. By weakness i mean those areas we tend to shy away from are all of a sudden forcefully placed in front of us and we lack any experience in managing these traits in ourselves. Our immediate response is kill (Metaphor) the cause of exposure. One of my weaknesses is dealing with those character traits around care/harm or feelings. The definition of care is not very clear accept at the extremes. Some rationality has to exist within all levels of thinking. Care or feelings can become aggressive in defending the one being served. I don't present well when one is trying to save a person or group by killing another group or person. This seems irrational to me. But in the one providing care they seem justified in presenting the death of one to save another. I am trying to understand as i don't want to become them in suggesting they must die because they are irrational. I have now broken my own rule. I don't believe the word complex really covers this phenomena. I believe we are living within a paradoxical social construct brought on by identity politics.

Wow! This is a truly hot topic across many nations today. From politics to social norms we are all experiencing some form of performance anxiety within the basics of existence. Our environment is critical to our success. Yes the physical environment is important but as you asked it is the metaphysical interpretation of that environment that brings aggression online. We can be intellectual concerning our environment to a point. But once the fight or flight chemicals engage our brain an acute turn happens. We become focused on cause and effect and begin the journey of removing the cause. Amazingly once this happens the cause is all that is seen. We may destroy that which we love in the name of the cause. This represents a total shadow shift much akin to Pandora's box. Until the shadow or box is completely emptied the process does not end. No amount of reasoning, facts or discussion can put the lid back on the box. It must run its course.

The irony is that we create the issue and that search for irrelevant solutions. Thank you dear Mohammed Abdul Jawad for being first to comment.

Thought-provoking post. We, humans have to reflect what causes behavioral changes. Instead of blaming in absence of evidences, it's far better to comprehend issues and come up with solutions.
