Rubbery World
Flexibility, resilience, agility and antifragility are frequent words in today world business domain. This is because of the rapid changes in our world with one change leading to others. Technological advances are disrupting our norms of life and we need to change to fit in the newly-created and ever-changing world. Best practices are no more valid in most situations. Interconnections globally are increasing at an alarming rate that may lead to rigidity. Like rubber, our rubbery world is. Natural rubber is useless for most applications and it needs to be cross-linked to become of value. The degree of cross-linking is important for if we over-link the otherwise loose rubber chains the rubber becomes rigid and would be useless again for use in applications like tires manufacturing.
The network and communications have advanced rapidly so that making connections with any person is almost feasible. Too many connections lead to rigidity and the cars we use to drive our lives then run on rigid tires that don’t respond to the changing environment.
The cynefin diagram of Dave Snowden is explained in the video below. The framework shows that businesses fall in four main categories: simple, complicated, complex and chaotic. This is shown in the image below.
Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynefin_framework
DO companies move from simple to complicated, complex and end up in chaos? If so, can the cynefin framework be drawn into front and back loops in emulation with the panarchy diagram? Would this be of any help to focus our thinking. This is best illustrated by showing images.
I have redrawn the cynefin framework as follows:
This presentation may be correlated directly with the Panarchy diagram.
We need early indicators to tell if a business is approaching complexity. Over-connections produce its ill-effects. In this case resilience drops. As much as we need connections, we also need to keep these connections beyond the capacity of a business or system to contain them.
I dare say that one simple indicator for simple systems is that people are more connected to best practices than they are among people. Likewise; in complicated systems people are more connected to good and functional practices than they are. It is a different story once a system enters the complex world where emergent practices are needed. Being emergent people are less attached to them and people connections become the main overriding factor. Being connected, people exchange ideas leading to the emergence of new ideas for more exploitation. This results in the quick use of available capital and resources and eventually to the formation of rigid rubbery networks that suffer from the rigidity gap. The system then needs to release itself to make sources and capital available. Eventually, the system reaches its edge of chaos and either rearranges to novel structures or end up in chaos. If so, novel practices shall be needed.
Our world is increasingly getting more connected. Are we running fast into extreme rigidity that shall initiate the back loop of release and self-organizing? Indications are in support of this guess.

Dear Tausif Mundrawala- even though I am flying in six hours and I need to sleep few hours before departure I couldn't do it without replying to your concise wisdom. Your comment amazed me because I drafted my next buzz on "Leaders Intelligence", in emulation of Emotional Intelligence. Your comment defines what is leadership intelligence. A great leaders is self-aware and is able to organize self accordingly so that he/she may be aware of others and be in a position to let them self-organize with passion, purpose, grand goals and persuasion. This leader is able to grow and allow others to grow. Besides, this leader has great communication skills to sell his ideas without forcing them or controlling. I shall refer to your grand comment in my next buzz. Meanwhile, I thank you for sharing the buzz my friend.

Fusion and confusion and their relationship- this is a great idea for further study Pascal Derrien. Not velocity alone as I would also suggest adding changing direction frequently is another source of confusion.

Thank you dear Chris 🐝 Guest for writing a formidable comment. You are right and agility in times of rapid changes is a must. Many corporate failed because their reduced capacity to respond to the changing environment of the business and because of their attachment to best practices that became invalid. These corporations lacked a big lesson- it is more important to be agile than to be big. Agility is a tribute that corporations need to activate on a continuous basis.

This is the point that the panarchy highlights dear Debasish Majumder. Over-connectivity makes the system rigid and "collapsible". If you inspect the panarchy you find this phase following the rigidity gap in the figure. It is post this phase that the system self-organizes or goes into oblivion.

thank you sir Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee for sharing your valued comment and the mention of elasticity of rubber with the bounce back metaphor. i wonder even bouncing to many primitive tribal zones with a networking and engaging trait, considering those tribal are uncivilized and to make them civilized by virtue of modern gadgets with initiating modern food habits force them to go into extinction. they even developed alcoholic habit of modern civilization and developed with various communicable diseases and thus went into oblivion. i am confused is it a chaotic approach or initiating complexity or connectivity? why the elasticity is absent from the part of the tribal? is it merely lack of empathy or profit driven inclinations which make the other species rigid? i am bit confused sir.

My friend Jerry, you provide a great definition of human elasticity with a perfect example. You may consider copyright for it. I hope also dear Debasish Majumder would read your comment. You leave me with lots to think about and how to expand on your example.

Great and challenging coment dear Debasish Majumder. In neuroscience we talk about the plasticity of the mind. Moreover, I did a 5 seconds search on human elasticity and I got surprised by the frequent use of the term human elasticity. Here is one reference: Human elasticity - IOPscience iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/0031-9120/29/6/004 In the reference I quote this "enabling us to bounce along like rubber balls". Why also do we use rigid minds and rigid rubber? I could go on. The resilience term for organization almost always compares resilience with that of a rubber band. I shall delver deeper to find out more. Meanwhile, I thank you my friend for your support and sharing the buzz.

The metaphor of chemical forces is quite weak though, considering that in real life we are dealing with multi-dimensional environments, which are quite different to the 3-dimensional ones dealt with in Chemistry. So, in order to bridge the enormous gaps of multi-dimensional space, stronger forces are not only tolerated by even required, hence a stronger connectivity is paramount for the fluid functionality of such a system. That's my view anyway. Cheers!

Zacharias 🐝 Voulgaris- great differebnce in opinions and this is more than welcome. In ego networks we find they become so self-contained and immune to change. They become rigid. If you inspect the panarchy diagram you may notice that as rigidity increases resilience drops. Their is a price for exaggeration and over-connecting is similar. It is, like rubber, as I mentioned in the buzz, too much connecting of the rubber chains through cross-linking eventually weaken the rubber. You have mentioned a great point- the quality of connections. This is an important issue. Water molecules have weak inter hydrogen bonds and so water flows. Imagine if these bonds were very strong like in crystals what would happen. I am surely going to research the quality of bonds. I think this important issue needs more attention.

@Bill King- I tried to draw the cynefin framework in analogy with the panarchy to ease their comparison. However; your suggestion is great and is worthy of serious consideration. Just to be 100% sure, if you would kindly email me your vision and I can then add it to the buzz with due credit to you. I am taken by the quality of your suggestion.

@!Oswaldo Enrique Diaz Delgado sensibly writes "Human beings must be able to change, logically understanding "Change" from the human perspective. From this point make use of all the contributions that flourish from the collective judgment, and that in turn, they can give / give us the beginning with positive signals for everything that presses from a conscious and human state. It is their whole, is the seed that motivates the will to learn to listen, secondly, give way to the origin-continuity of an opinion that within the valuations and arguments allow the truth as a source of knowledge, at the same time contributes (provides ) on a specific theme everything essentially human in its diversity of positive effects".

I liked your end paragraph and it is related to this buzz. This is in English "From this point "MIDDLE" Our abilities to generate mental balances such as truth Vs lies, reason within logic, humility within love, faith and hope as a mixture of values and principles" Gracias Oswaldo Enrique Diaz Delgado
