Simple Values Interactions

Simple Values Interactions

33ede3b3.jpg

I love comments that stretch my mind and fold it so that new attractors form with new possibilities. The comments of the great mind of Harvey Lloyd fall under this category. This is best exemplified in his comments on my buzz "Is It Better to Have More Choices"? In one of his comments Harvey wrote "Our choices don't make us successful. Bear with me as I split hairs. My values drive my success as I bring value to others. My choices then become tethered to this act. The values that lead success through the dark times is what we can't see but we do see the choices of an individual in a material sense. Basketball players are not successful because they wear Nike shoes".

We know that three simple rules may lead to the emergence of complex systems with unique behaviors such as the V-shape of flying birds. Self-organizing is an emergent property in this flying V-pattern. The inspiration that popped up in my mind having read Harvey's comment is the following:

If three simple rules interact to produce self-organizing patterns then how about following three or four simple values in life? Do we expect the formation of new patterns that would beautify our lives?
Ali Anani, PhD

The real values are those that serve others. They aren't egoistic values being self-centered. For values to have a feedback effect they should extend beyond the boundary of self-interest. These values should be larger than their "material sense" so that they may interact and produce unexpected patterns of rewards.

Not all values are the same. A person may have the value of "to be attractive to others". This is self-centered and quite different from restating it to "help people to be attractive to each other". This is one side of the issue. The other side is when we "underscore" ourselves and fail to appreciate our potential. We give low values to us and behave accordingly. Our choices tend to be distorted under these circumstances. Our decisions shall be inadequate and our actions shall be flaw. We need to have building values and stretch them to affect positively the lives of other people.

I believe that we need to have few building values. These values will not only guide us to make the right decisions; more these values shall feedback to each other and new version of us shall emerge. If I believe in myself and make others do the same. If I appreciate others and they do the same. If I share information with others to help them grow and they do the same something might emerge. The interactions of beliefs, appreciation and sharing shall produce new shapes and patterns for us all.

I believe in what Harvey wrote "My values drive my success as I bring value to others. My choices then become tethered to this act". I believe more that it is not only simple rules that lead to the emergence of new structural patterns; equally possible is the interactions of simple values to produce emerging patterns of human behavior. The choice is ours.

Harvey Lloyd's viewpoint is well worth framing within this buzz because the link to success is unarguable. It also reiterates what a great mind Harvey possesses based on a bedrock of PRACTICAL experiences - for the success relationship that Harvey articulates here is a practice. Now comes the challenging part for my own learning. Where do I store this golden nugget. In the framing it has been attached to complex systems and as an emergence, but the point Harvey made is way more practical than emergent scenarios. So I decided not to place this in my Violet Hive. Clearly the values articulated by Harvey are also a great leadership lesson. The great leadership lesson here is not the observation that Harvey's values contributes to his success, but that Harvey practices what he preaches. On this point alone, I would place this in my Blue Hive. Yet there is a group of people that are small number that I interact with, where this golden nugget can be pulled out of the draw when times come that I need it - a show and tell moment, rather than a capture thought. So it is I decided that this buzz will be placed in my Success Masters hive. With students it is never a case of "you must read this piece" because without those students having a personal context in which the values conversation can take place, this buzz remains a golden nugget, to pull out at the right time, as a one-on-one interaction. Even if I asked students to read this, they are told by their professors and their TA's and their social media to read this, and read that, and they will and the real golden nugget of what Harvey has said here will be lost on them - but as timely opening of the draw, it is a simple values interaction.

An exemplary buzz on the universal truth in life. My values drive my success as I bring value to others. These words are golden Harvey and should be the base foundation for our drive to success. For our values help us grow, learn and achieve sucess and when it is purpose driven we add value to others we meet along the way who are part of the journey we are on. For we do not grow alone we use the immediate surrounding and the people around us to grow and shine. And when we shine we shed light enabling others to see a well defined path. Thank you to the exemplary minds that have contributed to this discussion. A cup of knowledge and I'm still thirsty. As I keep drinking my cup runs empty and I will continue to find ways to fill my cup. Apologies for coming late into commenting on this enriching buzz.

DearSara Jacobovici- if I were to be asked who is the bee who reads your intentions of writing" my answer shall be you. Your comment is just precisely my intention of writing this buzz. I find the simplicity of your comment hugely important and I urge you to buzz on it. I intend too myself. I paused on your writing "I think it's because we need to break things down to intellectually understand how things work". I may also add the pride that an intellectual finds in dealing with issues that aren't easy. THis is a false pride. Your next statement is so powerful "... and stop the process there, we lose sight of the fact that such systems are dynamic and require continual interactions". This is the result of false pride. Is this a new paradox "The queen of paradoxes"? We say we are intellectual, but then this intellectualism that leads us far from understanding? I am so absorbed by your comment Sara and I now that it shall keep my mind busy till I formulate a buzz on it.

You said it correctly dear "The buzz is growing louder worldwide thanks to you and so many other brilliant bees". If it wasn't for the support, exchange of comments and appreciation as your comment is exemplary of I wouldn't have been able to make the buzz louder and so it is for other bees. I wish myself if I had more time to comment more because this is a great way to make beBee a more distinguished place. I appreciate your support beyond imagination. +1

Another important and thought provoking buzz Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee. You highlight the need for a simplicity that, unfortunately, our human nature finds difficult to accept; that is the human way, to complicate the simple. I think it's because we need to break things down to intellectually understand how things work. Yes, it's practical but we lose the trust of our ability to take in the whole and understand the "simple" fact. So when we identify the multiplicity of interactions that characterizes self-organizing systems, and stop the process there, we lose sight of the fact that such systems are dynamic and require continual interactions. This is where you come in and teach us: "I believe more that it is not only simple rules that lead to the emergence of new structural patterns; equally possible is the interactions of simple values to produce emerging patterns of human behavior. The choice is ours."

I agree with your assessment, Ali: "The real values are those that serve others. They aren't egoistic values being self-centered. For values to have a feedback effect they should extend beyond the boundary of self-interest." There's an important centuries-old quote (almost 1,000 years old) which I have tried to adopt as a manifesto in my own life experience: “For it is in giving that we receive.” —Saint Francis of Assisi https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Assisi

Thank you dear Tausif Mundrawala for your very sound comment. At least values give us the direction to follow. People with jealousy and envy for others will have a different direction as they tend to fold on themselves. They limit their possibilities. Those people with positive values grow beyond their boundaries and great things may unfold for them unexpectedly.

Thank you for the mention and your quote is spot on. In the midst of turmoil we need that guiding light that helps us work from a rote position. The values you subscribe are what can sustain us during these times. When we look at success we view it from a reflection of what has happened and what we perceive as the ingredients. I am sure we have all had success reflected back to us only to realize the person who was observing had no idea of what we went through to get to there. The late and sleepless nights of musing over options, the family's experience while you pontificated the risk professionally and personally, dont really get reflected in the street view of success. The perception of success often does not match the reality experienced. Great post and yes i would agree, in the end, it is our values that get exposed within our choices.

It is adaptation to the circumstances dear debasish majumder. If we read carefully through the simple rules birds follow then we find that they follow them so as not to collide while on flight and not obscure the sight from each other. We humans too need not obscure the light from each other and not collide with each other s that we may all progress.
