Smelly Organizations

Smelly Organizations

0fc689b4.jpg

I walked in my house the other day and could smell the fragrance of roasted butter-enriched popcorn. I was right and my daughter had just finished eating it. The smell revealed to me an action that I didn't see. Smells can be very revealing.

The question that crossed my mind then was how about organizations that breathe their culture and if their smell would reveal their actions. It turned out that Professor Sumantra Ghoshal tackled this issue recently in his talk to the World Economic Forum. I embed the video and encourage watching it attentively.

I felt there is more that can still be discussed. Some organizations have a tight grip on all affairs without empowering the staff or trusting them to do anything but listen and obey instructions. Those organizations lack interacting with the environment and their staff are stressed and fearful because if they don't finish jobs on time they shall be penalized. The employees breathe fear and exhale their worries. The more the employees are stressed, the more likely they shall exhale volatile metabolites that shall intoxicate the indoor environment. That ventilation is restricted because of tight instructions shall even make the place rapidly a house of moulds growing everywhere.

681c85c9.jpg

I have seen what fear does. I recall that while doing my post doctorate research a previous student of mine started his post-graduate work at the same university and he was also new wed. I invited the couple for a lunch and then went out for relaxation on the beautiful yards outside. It was a lovely sunny day. Over a long distance the wife saw a lady taking her dog for a walk. The wife was afraid of dogs and started yelling "what if this dog runs away"? She started sweating and yelling louder "the dog is approaching me". The dog was still far away, but the closer it was the greater the worry of the lady was. All of a sudden the dog smelled her fear and rushed at her at great speed. You can imagine what happened.
The smell of organizations might invite watching "dogs" to an organization and bite it. Fearful organizations have their smell and the greater fear is, the more likely the watching competitors shall smell their fear. Who is scared from a scared organization?

The problem compounds because when organizations live in fear for long times the employees become used to the smell and lose their power to observe it. It becomes an accepted risk. They aren't different from employees working in petrol stations and soon the employees lose their sense to smell benzene. Should benzene leak and burn it shall be late to control its risk. Oppression shall lead to the same and employees may find themselves in a burning house because they lost their sense to smell the leaking danger.

Tight-controlled organizations generate no fresh air, no fresh ideas and no fresh initiatives. They live in a culture where bad smells or bad ideas are accepted whereas fresh ones are rejected. Fishy ideas become the norm and fishy people get most of the opportunities.

I have to find out how you gathered so many nuggets of your own wisdom dear CityVP 🐝 Manjit. You keep amazing me. In reference to what you have written "but life has it nature of waste and we often end up wasting that waste", you remind me of the saying "The biggest source of energy is wasted energy". Later I showed that the biggest source of time is wasted times. Yes, we end up in wasting cheap waste sources.

Dear Ali Anani I am the smeller of my own words and sometimes they don't smell well, because we are focused on the nutrition, but life has it nature of waste and we often end up wasting that waste. There is value in every iota of existence. Louis CK made an observation about a typical waste that ends up making us happy. He says in this clip "you don't have to be smart to laugh at farts, but you have to be stupid not to" - sometimes that can be a nugget of wisdom for someone in this world too - that is why I value this diversity and variations in who we are as people. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN-YT-S0th0

Dear @Fatima Williams- your sharp mind amazes me. When I read a comment by you then I know what a high quality comment to expect. I love your triad of energy, place and people. I wonder if you could provide a little bit more on them. I have a sense you have deep thoughts on this. In fact, you have just inspired me with an idea for a forthcoming buzz. I hope your time would allow you to explain a little more. Thank you. Your reference to beBee is valid and I again sense what you meant by the triad by referring to beBee. Still, I would love to probe more your thinking.

The concept of smell and it's effect on us and the people around us is a very interesting topic Ali Anani Smell forms a triad with energy, place and people. The energy that is present in a particular place with a particular set of people defines Smell to me; in the context of a organisation or a home. If these 3 are in a perfect unison then there is fragrance. Correct me if I'm wrong please. I have witnessed that these three have resulted in forming a project at office or shutting down of projects as well and Have resulted in a Happy or broken home. SMELL - Simply Making Effective Essence Lasts. The smell of beBee is like honey and hence the essense will last for a long time until unless the essense or the people making it are lost. To everlasting fragrance created from the Smell of us beBee's ❤ #beBeesforever #beBeelove

That is what diversity is Harvey where I value the activist and the soldier. A lot of people have died so we can have this space and there are people who are sacrificing so we do not revert to control that denies us a space to think. Sometimes those that died were not one's that actually wanted to die for their cause, they got caught up in the maelstrom and the system finished them off. That is the story of Aaron Swartz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M85UvH0TRPc Aaron Swartz commited suicide because he became the object of an institutional witchhunt that wanted to make an example of him and the pressure applied on him, led to the loss of a life that worked to protect this ability for us to use media in the manner we are now accustomed - and to make this a greater freedom. How we choose to fight or how we choose to love is at the heart of who we are. Those choices also include how we choose to learn. The 1960's did get us to where we are today, because they produced the hippies, that produced the technologists, that produced a space called the Internet but it did not change the smell of the world - this world stinks as much as it did in the 60's. When our lives pass and what we believe is changes is cremated or buried with it, human beings will continue to evolve. That is how change happens. Aaron Swartz did not commit suicide because he had chosen to fight the good fight, he died because he got caught in the cross-fire - and that stinks, that really stinks, as much as people who still don't know who that young lad is or why his death was such a phenomenal tragedy the way Lawrence Lessig would see it. I honour Harvey Lloyd but I am no Harvey Lloyd.

Your original comment spoke to the bloating at the top of resources where the bottom is barely making it, if at all. I am understanding of the balance between ones perception of the world and maintaining a healthy inward spirit. In my thoughts this is a given. We have folks at both ends of the spectrum. But folks like the ones commenting here have the presence of mind to start a wave of change. We deal in poverty everyday in my profession, not just financial but poverty of the mind. We must act on this force to the extent we can and hope that a few years from now we have steered the youth one degree in the beginning and far away from their current mindset over time. A holistic approach will be required that emanates from a grass roots effort to overcome what we have built.

I agree Harvey we should not shy away from the truths of this world but we should not wear them permanently either, I don't want to develop a tough skin but find my way back to a supple skin that acknowledges my own ability to develop resilience but also safety intelligent. Our guts both have the strength of a bacterial army but they also have a smell and too often what flows from our gut is being plugged into a world that is full of cruelty, and violence and all sorts of abominations, and instead of battling that world, we begin to battle our chemistry. Our stomachs are engineered to protect us from the acid and microbiome that helps us - I am mindful of how our thoughts can create an imbalance within us since our mind cannot discern between what we imagine and what is real, so as we seek to live with the imbalance that is prevalent in the world, I need to improve the relationship within between my own mind and my heart and my gut - an inner trinity. That is also when ideas such as the Chakras make most sense to me because then it provides another kind of map. That I call this learning defines my own limitations but it also opens the door to life.

Personally CityVP 🐝 Manjit, your comment has gone straight to my heart. Thank you. Your comment about fragrance and home and then the fractal connection between home and organization, gives us a glimpse of a potential that is rarely realized. Dear Ali Anani I have duly responded to Harvey's comment by taking about the sensory space that is a home. This is where our good friend Milos Djukic should be interested because an organization is a fractal, and that fractal begins with the making of organization. The making of organization begins with the making of a home for a home is the first fractal level of organization.

There is a human faculty of desensitization regarding what we get exposed to. This numbing of senses from overwhelm is real and it needs due consideration. The one feature of a rotting corpse that is depicted in movies about murder is the apparent obnoxious smell, and I cannot attest to this third party observation, nor do I ever wish to find out what this smell is. What I admire most about Sara Jacobovici is that she does not relish for one nano-second any media that depicts horror, I learned from her that there are human beings who remain sensitive, and instead of becoming desensitized have opened their senses to the world - and in so doing understand that sensitivity is to show sufficient reverence but not to engage one morsel in the putrid feasts of horror. The word that we must gravitate to as our sensory capacities increase is FRAGRANCE. Fragrance is not an idealism it is an action. Since our mother is aging, one day she will pass on and with her passing some but not all of the fragrance of our home. She did not have to watch the horrors that we watch on TV, she saw as much horror as a child as any Syrian refugee because she experienced fully as a child the horrors of the partition. She experienced the horror of losing a child. She experienced the horror of traffickers as they took advantage of the need for workers in Britain and then the stink of the meat factory that needed those workers. When awful news comes she still cries, she and Sara share the same sensitivity. That is why she built a home around fragrance. Mothers is a difficult role to play but the best know the smell of their own home. I don't seek hope, I seek fragrance.

"Our global sense of smell still only points noses to the superficial." Excellent. We need villains within our sense of existence. It allows the opportunity to let our selves live freely. We have lots of smelly things happening in our world. I would state in a broad brush comment that the citizens are seeing a reflection of their own greed. 1st world folks require a mechanism to help them sort out third world existence. How do we sort out sleeping in our beds at night with our many blessings when we know that many are simply hungry? There are many oppressive things that happen in our attempt to overcome world poverty. The poor take advantage of the poor, governments seek to hold power over the poor and systems of governance are altered to satisfy the elite. When we ponder this question as with many questions. It should boil down to what can i do? The problem is large and opposing but it is the question we need to ask. From wealth to exploitation the issues of poverty will not end until we all want it to stop. Greed is but another issue within the first world. The third world doesn't worry about greed, its looking for the next meal.

It is perhaps a sign of the values of our time that we can spend money designing breathalyzers to nab drunks who drive, but will not spend a cent on nabbing those in corporations who are drunk with greed. We all know this stink but have our noses cut off by corporate lawyers the moment we encroach those whose outrageous hording and accumulation of power endanger the values of humanity and its peace. That Oxfam claim that the richest 62 billionaires in the world own as much wealth as the poorer half of the world’s population and if that does not smell right, it should not. The irony here is that all of this happened right under our nose over many decades. What is our response been other than produce breathalyzers and deodorant so we set upon each other, in India the rich once upon a time called this "divide and rule". Our global sense of smell still only points noses to the superficial.

Ali Anani, what an amazing concept; the smell of "disengagement". We know for sure that smell is crucial in a newborn's bonding process, which then gets carried over throughout our lives. But now you make me think that an early infant experience of disengagement must also carry its olfactory imprint and that this can only add to our understanding of issues related to attachment. Bravo Dr. Ali! I'm buzzing away with your inspiration to do some research!

I think your point Mohammed Sultan brings up some very important aspects of industry and knowledge of the sense of smell; both from understanding that products which are scent based, like perfumes, are attractive to the consumer and the need to look at our own organizations in relation to the sense of smell. I think it would be invaluable if an organization had as a section of its evaluation process focused on the sensory aspect of its environment. In my youth, I remember real estate agents' technique of how to sell homes was to have the owner have a cake or bread baking in the oven. They knew that when the prospective buyer walks into the house, that smell will make the buyer feel that this is a home he or she would want to own.

Dear @Deb Lange- your comments "smell" always like great perfumes do. I smell your deep understanding of the buzz simply by your concise writing "I agree the more we have become sanitized and live in a world of abstractions the more we don't take notice and sense and smell toxicity". You know that comments in general smell. WE can tell from "smelly" words a lot about the author. Grudge-bearing comments produce hatred and tis in turn produces rapidly toxic volatiles that show u in the breath. You bring an idea to my mind "smelly words" and how to study their effect. I think this idea relates to the comment below by Sara Jacobovici. I wonder what you think? Therefore I am in full agreement with you "The human being is amazing, although we have neglected our senses, they are there to rise again". Do we need to establish the "Smell Hive"?

Great suggestion on the smell of organizations. Many car dealers spray perfumes so that the potential customers would be encouraged to buy the car as smells have their attractions. IN organizations where no body care we may smell "disengagement" as we shall find careless actions (leaving napkins on floor, dirtiness of lifts and many examples". Actions produce their smells dear Mohammed Sultan

You are very correct in all the points you highlighted wisely in your comment Sara Jacobovici: "Thank you for focusing on the sense of smell which is still on the periphery of corporate discussions compared to the visual and auditory"- "There is now advancement in the medical field of being able to detect and diagnose health problems through the breath"- yes, and I know that in the UK they use photoacoustic spectrometer to detect volatiles in breath as little as 1 part per billion and not million. "who are invested in the fishy opportunities are that they don't realize that the fishy ideas don't have a long shelf life"- again, a great highlight of the fact that fishy opportunities and actions shall result in bodies of short life span. You amaze me with the beauty of your mind dear Sara and how you get the best out of my buzzes.

It is very encouraging to see and hear that we are returning to our "senses" Ali Anani. Thank you for focusing on the sense of smell which is still on the periphery of corporate discussions compared to the visual and auditory. You write, "The smell revealed to me an action that I didn't see." What a great opening to the distinction between these two senses, that one can be experienced after the fact of an event which was not seen. This is a tremendously powerful concept. You write, "The employees breathe fear and exhale their worries. The more the employees are stressed, the more likely they shall exhale volatile metabolites..." There is now advancement in the medical field of being able to detect and diagnose health problems through the breath. Up to now, breath has been used to measure alcohol levels, lactose and fructose intolerance, and so on. Now they are looking at identifying a range of illnesses from diabetes to cancer. You are accurately describing that we can actually exhale toxins inhaled in the work environment. I appreciate your important connection between the sense of smell and the respiratory system. To go back to smell and sight; you write, "Fishy ideas become the norm and fishy people get most of the opportunities." It never ceases to amaze me how short sighted individuals who are invested in the fishy opportunities are that they don't realize that the fishy ideas don't have a long shelf life. They decay pretty quickly. So one may say that bad smells blind us to being able to see ahead. Thank you again Dr. Ali for a very provocative piece and a tremendous discussion that your work inspires.
