Sweet and Bitter Management

Sweet and Bitter Management

b4fdf543.jpg

Humans are complex beings and understanding this complexity is challenging. I thought that using a metaphor to understand this complexity will help us better our understanding of this complexity. The idea of this post emerged while commenting on a post written by Clau Valerio. I ended my comment by writing “Again, I agree as the seeds of bad memories are toxic and they may intoxicate relationships. How to turn bitter seeds into sweet ones? This thought is worthy of a buzz on its own”.

There are sweet and sour seeds. There are also sweet and bitter seeds. Sweet lemon and bitter lemon, sweet melon and bitter melon, sweet orange juice and bitter orange juice, sweet memories and bitter memories, sweet employees and bitter employees, sweet acts and bitter acts and sweet dreams and bitter dreams. I would also add sweet management and bitter management. What makes the sweet and the bitter? Are they the product of the workplace environment? Or, are they seeded in individuals?

Bitter orange juice results in part from not distinguishing the mature fruit from the ripening fruit. Only upon ripening the starch in orange will have converted to the sweet sugar. We tend to do the same as we say an employee is mature enough. But maturity may be filled with the complex starch and the employee is still sour and we have assigned him/her to higher responsibilities when he/she isn’t ripe yet. We need to find ways to know if an employee has ripened or has just acquired maturity.

There is another complexity. The edge of ripening for what follows ripening is decaying. We tend sometimes not to give a “ripened employee” the opportunity to move on till he/she has decayed. What a waste to turn a ripened employee into a decayed one!

One other way of turning an employee into a bitter one is to grow in a bad workplace soil like oranges that grow in a bad soil and turn bitter. The workplace health affects the employee healthy attitude negatively and the seeds of bitterness start growing inside him/her. We use the term “yellow employees”. This reminds me of the yellow leaves of orange resulting from poor fertilization. Yellowness of employees can result from not growing them in a good soil and then blame them for not performing. This could well be the result of wrong managerial practices rather than from the employee whom we tend to blame incorrectly.

Many plant parts turn toxic to defend them from animals eating them. It is safety that is endangered. Some employees may defend themselves by acting similarly. The instinct of survival makes them toxic so that they may not be “eaten” for free. In workplaces where employees feel unsafe no wonder, we shall find toxicity prevailing. Instead of correcting the soil we tend to correct the employee and the problem never disappears.

We tend to add sweeteners to remove or dilute bitterness. This is a cosmetic approach because the root cause of the problem is still there. Humans produce bitter seeds not because often they are bad, but rather because they find this toxicity protecting them from being eaten up.

One other issue that is often overlooked is the realization that higher temperatures hide bitter tastes. This is a known fact. In organizations that produce friction among employees generate heat that causes the temperature to rise up. It is in these turbulent times that the bitterness of some employees may pass unnoticed. These organizations may consider cooling down the atmosphere so that they may discover the bitterness and try to remove its causes and hiding the bitterness without removing it.

The bitterness of fruits is closely related to the bitterness of employees. Do you agree?

Thank you dear Savvy Raj. A buzz that inspires the idea of another buzz is a high form of engagement that doesn't count on the metrics of engagement. You have inspired me and many others as well with new ideas and new directions. WE need brains like your to make our brains dance with joy.

My response to your comment dear Savvy Raj inspired me with an idea for my next buzz. Thank you. My comment reads Dear friend Savvy Raj I am truly flattered (if there is truth in flattering) by my mention in this inspirational and poetic buzz. It is a lovely read and is so enriched with wisdom. I select two examples from your outstanding post. "I am fond of nature. I enjoy witnessing and understanding the development of life and its interconnectedness". Absolutely correct and the complexity arising from increased interconnectedness is mind-bewildering. The more we interconnect, the more feedback effects and the closer to the edge of chaos we get. There is a prices for being excessively interconnected. "To germinate on its own and explore possibilities in trial and error". This fits very well with the cynefin framework. The more complexity we have, the more we need to explore possibilities depending on trial and error. Seeds think. Great buzz to share proudly

Dear Jerry- Gaia will revenge for harming it. Unfortunately, only after we have paid a heavy price we awaken to reality. And as you say "and so it goes".

Dr. Ali, Gaia will have her way. I believe the bitter and the sweet of humanity will fall before the onslaught of the punishment she will deliver. Many will die as we have already seen but those redeemed will be the ones that honor Mother Earth in thought and deed. Their seed may provide a better direction for us all. And so it goes.

So, you consider buzzes are equivalent to seeds John Rylance. There are good seeds and there are bad seeds. It is the authors' responsibility to "throw" good seeds in the soil to make beBee a very worthy platform.

Cyndi your comments made me think of the parable of the seeds/soils. I have always thought it had relevance to learning, and teachers were the sowers and the children the varying soils. We reap what we sow. For us on beBee to produce the honey we need to have sown seeds to grow the plants to provide the nectar.

You used dear Clau Valerio the term capacity to understand people. This is a fantastic term and expands my horizon. In fact, you gifted me with a new idea for a buzz. Your inspiration is high and warm. My great respect for you is based on admiration and respect. You flourish in a great way.

Thank you dear John Rylance for writing true, but poetic, comment. Yes, I love the word bittersweet because the two opposites coexist in one word reflecting the reality of life. It is the sweetness admixed with bitterness and what we taste reflects our attitude. You remind me of brainteasers that show two faces- one for an angel and one for a devil and which one you see first.

Bittersweet:- arousing pleasure tinged with sadness or pain. Like the pleasure of celebrating someone's life, but experiencing the sadness/pain of why you are celebrating it. Summed up in these lines fromThe Verve's song Bittersweet Symphony of Life, written by Jagger and Richards. Cause it's a bittersweet symphony of life Trying to make ends meet youre a slave to the money then you die

Thank you my dear Clau Valerio for sharing your mind. You raise an important issue "I suppose the same applies to people, the rejection of "bitter" people is inevitable". No question is that our first reaction is our first reaction- to reject toxic people. However; if we pause and think deeper we may find the reason for the toxicity of some people. They may have turned so because of their rejection and isolation by others and they become toxic to protect themselves as plants do. You remind me of a mother who has a smelly urine. The first reaction of the mother is rejection; however because of her love to her baby she will question why his urine smells. It is not the fault of the child. We need to deal with toxic people similarly. I believe this points deserves more discussions because it is a valid point. I thank you also for sharing the buzz my friend.

"Poverty cares for immediate problems and it shall not be a priority for the needy." Exactly...My aim here is not necessarily to capture the attention of the environmentalists...They already know the drill;-) The struggle here is for the the poor, whose main focus is food, clothing and shelter...and of course, affordable healthcare...Poverty creates toxicity in the social soil for all of us...So in reference to my comment on the environment... "Organizations may consider cooling down the atmosphere so that they may discover the bitterness and try to remove its causes and hiding." Lest they suffer a 'social eruption.' Just matching metaphors I guess...Thanks for quenching my thirst for social justice;-) My pleasure to share!

No question your combined comments here dear Cyndi wilkins if noticed by environmentalists will capture their attention and will build on it campaigns to raise awareness about social justice as an added need for safe environments. Poverty cares for immediate problems and it shall not be a priority for the needy. Social justice and environment protection go together as a bundle. I appreciate your expansion of my idea about the eruption of social volcanoes and building so nicely on it.

Interesting you should mention the volcano in response to my comment about Mother Nature detoxing...Volcano's erupt for that very reason...as a means of slowing the process of global warming. Our carbon footprint has damaged her terribly...It is her way of cooling herself by spewing into the atmosphere sun-blocking sulfate emissions...sort of a natural sunscreen to protect her from the burning rays of ultra violet light. Unfortunately for humans, that means collateral damage...And so it goes with social eruptions...someone always suffers...It's a process of elimination that will ultimately result in our own demise if we do not smarten up to the worldwide crisis we all face...There will be no winners. There is no such thing as us and them...It is just one US. It's time to stop being so self-centered and selfish and work together toward a sustainable future.

I don't dispute your thought dear Debasish Majumder. The interaction of the seed with the environment depends on both and I agree with you. When the environment is hostile the seeds and leaves may become toxic to protect the plant. I thank you for your kind words and for generously sharing the buzz.

i wonder, whether seed or soil, which plays the major role to determine its characteristic features. it is true the internal or inherent quality of a seed do plays the key role about it may adapt or accommodate with the external soil initially it may be planted with, but at the same time, we cannot rule out the soil texture and its ingredients too plays a determining role to be an exponential one or to become obliterate too. however, fantastic buzz indeed sir Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee! enjoyed read and shared. thank you very much for the buzz sir.

Cyndi wilkins- sadly, I have to agree with your bittersweet comment for it tells the truth. You read the "political intention" of my buzz very well. You pinpointed the main problem " It's a selfish. hypocritical power play to keep the rich richer and the poor poorer". This follows what we describe as power law. Volcanoes follow this law. When a system and including social systems follow a power law it has two destinies- either to self-organize of undergo disruption. The "social volcano" is not different and it will follow steps. That is why I find your lines "No amount of sweetener will dilute the widespread bitterness being felt worldwide...It's up to Mother Nature now...and she has already begun her detoxification process". You ring a bell and hopefully at least few ears shall listen. When a volcano erupts nobody wins. The eruption of social volcanoes is riskier.

A bittersweet post for sure Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee...As far as the U.S. goes, the rights of corporate America are continually favored over the rights of the 'human.' It's a selfish. hypocritical power play to keep the rich richer and the poor poorer...The latter of course being in larger numbers, kept in check by the sheer will just to keep their heads above water and their families fed. The 'fat cats' continue sitting on their paranoid perches waiting to lash out at anyone who threatens their white-knuckled wealth. The old schoolyard bully game of 'King of the Hill.' We denounce other countries for their human rights violations and yet here in the U.S. the lack of effective gun laws results in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent people every year. No amount of sweetener will dilute the widespread bitterness being felt worldwide...It's up to Mother Nature now...and she has already begun her detoxification process. All we can do now as inhabitants of this lovely planet is join her in her fight for survival.
