The Hidden Fractal Power

The Hidden Fractal Power

2c03ff7d.jpg

I don't know how the idea of this buzz emerged. All I recall it started by looking at the image of the rugged leaves below.

0470d319.jpg

I found myself comparing this rugged shape with rugged coastlines and rugged mountains.

3d12d287.jpg

Coastlines are fractal and we may not determine their lengths precisely. The more we zoom in, the more we find them longer. By the same token, can we measure precisely the length of a rugged leaf? It is a fractal one. Some studies find that leaves have a fractal length between 1.7-1.9, but shall we ever be sure of the exact length of even a leaf? We know more to find how less we know.

Not all leaves are rugged. Some have smooth edges. Not all rugged leaves are broad and some are narrow. Trees balance their acts. Depending on water and light availability they modify their leaves. Leaves absorb sunlight and release water. When water is scarce he leaves become narrow to minimize water losses. The rugged leaves tend to lose heat faster. When water is abundant they have broad leaves to absorb maximum sunlight. Is this a kind of self-organizing of shapes? I believe yes. Fractals are self-organized in more depth than we know.

955eae3d.jpg

My mind went then to think of snowflakes. Snowflakes form in many altitudes and produce wonderful displays of hexagonal structures.

3cd722ca.jpg

Snowflakes are fractals as they are self-similar regardless of scale. Zoom in and zoom out and they shall look at the same. Wonderfully, there are also sand flakes (I shall get a typo if I write sandflakes in emulation of snowflakes). Recent researches have shown how sand forms flakes that look like snowflakes. When two fluids with different viscosities are mixed together, the more freely flowing fluid expands in finger-shaped intrusions into the other fluid. Surprisingly, crowds too form finger-like distribution. In areas of bidirectional motion, people tend to follow others to minimize collisions (maximize throughput). This is known as the as the “fingering” effect".

I wonder if there is"Fractal Power" acting on systems to organize their movement, shapes, arrangement so as to maximize their use of available resources? Rugged coasts, rugged leaves and I imagine rugged beliefs, opinions, ideas and you name it. Are their intangible fractals inside us organizing us without being aware of?

Let me explain what I mean. Crowds distribute in finger-like distributions to avoid collisions. When I say my mind is crowded with many ideas do these ideas instead of colliding find an escape gate so as to not collide? Is there a fractal pattern emerging from the crowdedness of ideas? Is this possibility greater when we have ideas moving in opposite lanes with positive ideas in one lane and negative ones in the opposite lane?

I have no answers. I am just asking. We don't know till now how snowflakes forms or how sand flakes forms. This comforts me for not knowing the answers to my questions.

I want to get back to the fingering effect and the researcher who studied these sand fractals, Xiang Cheng - for the actual research Cheng did to discover this effect is mindboggingly complex, the kind that Vincenzo De Florio can get their mind around https://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0712/0712.2019.pdf but which is out of reach to the layman. Then I go to the other dimension of people studying effects of people looking at this effect and the words apophenia and pareidolia pop up. http://59ways.blogspot.ca/2012/01/apophenia-and-pareidolia_09.html This too can become way too outside the range of the layman, indeed the more one studies this, the more we begin to identify with the world that Gerald Hecht will readily understand, well beyond the mainstream. What Milos does well in his comments is make a linkage between the creation of social networks and complex adaptive systems, which so far invariably brings me back to the one place where these linkages are studied at depth, which is namely the Sante Fe Institute and even then that Institute provides disclaimers between the work of individual researchers and its purpose. One such work is by Melanie Mitchell, called Complex Systems: Network Systems. http://www.santafe.edu/media/workingpapers/06-10-036.pdf Even if there is a Seth Godin or Malcolm Gladwell type that can channel the work of researchers into mainstream insights, I recognize that complex adaptive systems explain much but the large body of business thinking is wired differently, so we can learn to see these thing but not get mainstream business folk to see what it is we have learned. That is what I see as "hidden" in fractal power, so I am still grappling with how best to make this invisible visible - otherwise we end up in complex thinking communicated as a specialty.

So coming back reading this buzz is as Donna-Luisa Eversley mentioned is beauty beyond measure and it's quality is simply profound. I would love to agree with Irene Hackett beautiful comment here as she shares my thoughts on this " You, dear Ali are the "Fractal Power acting on systems (beBee) on organizing movement (of thoughts and ideas) ....so as to maximize their use of available resources." Your inspiration moves us, our thoughts & ideas beautifully colliding and taking new direction and shape - such as cannot be measured, but like a fractal coastline, when one looks close, such inspiration is much bigger than the senses can perceive" As Milos says " Learning about fractals to me is more like absorbing and shaping of my perceptions " The beauty of the object is in the hands and eyes of the maker and that beauty reflects that person inner beauty like that of the beautiful snowflake and the Fractals Forever beBee's who have the Fractal Power to organise, enrich and enlightened play a major role in avoiding the crowdedness of ideas. Thank you Ali Anani for opening up the fractal world to me :)

You're too kind dear Irene Hackett. Carl Segan was the one and only, period. Part II Dear Ali Anani, This is an extremely important topic: social networks and complexity, fractal was once a symbol of beauty while this time it is essence. We are dealing with the chaos right now. That's why I'm involved in applied complexity science for more than 15 years. Since I am a material scientist, I want to point out once again that mathematical modeling of multi-scale phenomena and matter-materials response on different length scale, as a powerful tool in modeling not only physical phenomena, but also social phenomena, certainly includes required knowledge about self-similar systems and fractals and self-similar solutions of partial differential equations. The fractal nature of the fracture process and the geometry of a crack are well described in the literature by the father of fractals (Benoit B. Mandelbrot, Fractal analysis and synthesis of fracture surface roughness and related forms of complexity and disorder, International Journal of Fracture, Volume 138, Issue 1-4, March 2006, pp 13-17, DOI 10.1007/s10704-006-0037-z). This is currently the biggest hit in the scientific world: multiscale modeling and analysis in the different fields of science, including social science, which is certainly a fertile ground for the fundamental and applied aspects of complexity science. Once I was wrote: “Fractals will become like worn soles. Please never ever forget that fractals are strictly related to chaos.” Kind Regards, Milos

Part I I agree with you dear Ali Anani This is not an "instant idea" and anyone who feels the need, or recognize the importance can investigate gradually, step by step. Writing about fractals is more like teaching and mutual shaping of perception rather than activism. Many people have no idea what fractals are, and what are their connections with other social phenomena (the Butterfly Effect, John Henry effect and Pygmalion effect), complexity science, social philosophy, and human relationships. It must not be forgotten that every discovery has always been preceded by years or even decades of painstaking learning and investigation. The challenge and most obvious problem is to linking models and phenomenology of complexity theory and cognitive science at different scales and to translate the insights gained into outcomes of value to the whole beBee community and even further in other social structures. I'm trying to provide scientific communication with practical examples in this highly complex area. Especially given the huge importance of science regarding complex adaptive systems, particularly when it comes to social networks, their sustainable development-prosperity and human relations (interactions) in social media. Those who will rule in this area, will also have the possibility for a much greater "manipulation", whose final effects can be also extremely humane and aimed toward cooperation for mutual benefits for social media owners and users. Future leadership is about social complexity with a growing trend of social encounters and exchanges

Interesting and imaginative comment dear Mohammed Sultan As I am reviewing all the comments I find all sorts of ideas. They come from different angles. perspectives and varied imaginations. Like atoms have the same structure design- a nucleus with orbiting electrons and yet they behave differently. It is filling the orbitals that make the difference and how filled these orbitals are. To be inert is to be fully saturated? You have a great perspective my friend. When I think of the periodic table and how elements change in their physical and chemical properties by simply adding electrons to different orbitals then I understand the difference between carbon dioxide and oxygen. But taking polarity then the difference between water and carbon dioxide. May be those people have a much different ionization potential my friend. I fully agree with the idea that if you love (not necessarily know) what you do then you can explain it simply. I say love and not understand because we love fractals but we have a long way to understand them fully. Do you feel "ionized" after reading this response?

Again, fractals are both repeating AND changing. Repeating rules of forming fractals, but with similar but not identical fractals. Human behaviors do show fractals, but these fractals are not identical for if there is a minor change of the rules of their interplay we end up with huge variation within the boundary of a fractal. Your point David Navarro López " Honestly, I don't see the connection between a repeating thing and a changing thing" is legitimate, but fractals are both.

Well, then we have a long debate David Navarro López. I ask one question- why stock markets show fractal waves? In my presentation Emotions in Action: http://www.slideshare.net/hudali15/emotions-in-action The great similarity of the emotion waves for mountaineering and those of the stock market. Values and behaviors are connected. That is why we see similar fractals for both distant fields of human activities. If values have nothing to do with behaviors then I am completely wrong. I might defer publishing my next buzz to 'digest" all comments here and because I am flying out on Monday and will be unable to respond to comments if I publish. I shall decide later today.

As fractal is a natural phenomenon or a mathematical set that exhibits a repeating pattern that displays at every scale, I can't see as clearly as you do a repeating pattern, in your words, "that fractal patterns are the reward for sticking to simple rules of human values" since human values and behaviours are changing from second to second. Honestly, I don't see the connection between a repeating thing and a changing thing. If you consider a basic human value like love, when you display it in another scale, it will be much different than the original one, not only in size but as well in the kind of it. Sorry to seem simplistic, but mixing the both concepts sounds to me like mixing apples and potatoes, unless you explain it better for my limited and nearsighted mind. Look forward to your next post about this challenge, (or in your words, just to tease your mind)

I love the way you tell your experiences dear Deb Lange. In my next buzz on cleaning (washing) ideas I find that we ideas split into micelles . We remove dirt of ideas by allowing them to self-organize. You wrote "we all separate and go off on our own or in small groups". I say ideas group into micelles. Your thoughts are very deep

Dear Mohammed Sultan- does simplicity conceal complexity? Complexity starts from the interaction of simple rules. This is the paradox and the beauty at the same time. I am writing a buzz on Cleaning Ideas- this is my metaphor for visualizing complexity. Like we wash clothes we wash ideas. They are always crude to start with and dirty to start with. I hope this metaphor shall not as you said " in the use of metaphors to conceal the original issue ,not to call attention to it".

Fractals initiate from simple rules. When birds flock together or tree branch out they follow simple rules that lead to the emergence of repeating patterns. I wrote once that fractal patterns are the reward for sticking to simple rules of human values. On this issue, I agree with you David David Navarro López

Precisely because cause and effect are not always linear, we can not reach the ultimate effects of a cause or act. They go beyond our power of influence. So my choice is to influence things at their inception, with high human values and positivity, and care about the closest effects on which I still can have some influence, forgetting about the rest, with a thought in my mind: If everybody would act like I am planning to do, would be the world a better place, or a worse place to live in? And then I act consequently.

Dear Milos Djukic- let me first mention that I am like a poet -reads poetry to extract some beauty to enrich my heart and mind, but then to remain authentic I forget the rest. I love your buzzes, enjoy reading them and extract the essence that appeals to me from them. When this essence shows up I never know. All I know it is there for using one day without even planning to. I have read your LI post and you amaze me with the beauty of your writing. The paradox for me is that you are a doctor in mechanical engineering while measurements have a role to play; yet you are also a genius when it comes to writing about fractals. I wonder how you integrate your two worlds. May be this is an ideas for a buz. I am trying to use my science background to understand the beauty of fractals. I see fractals in nature and I see them in us. I believe in the integrity of our world as I mentioned to David David Navarro López in my comment below. I might imagine wrongly, but that doesn't mean I shall stop imagining. I use different approaches to understand fractals. I reach a point of view that is in accordance with your comment. Slight differences may grow in different paths, but then this is the beauty of fractals.

Ali Anani

Dear David Navarro López. I am now reading your buzz and those buzzes of dear @Milos Djukic before responding. In all cases, I believe in the law of large numbers and that they lead to the formation of patterns. I am explaining in my next buzz why. For now, I say like in soap emulsions in water the soap tend to form micelle with repeating patterns and so many patterns form. I am trying to use tangible patterns to imagine intangible ones. I believe in that patterns repeat. Nature uses its tricks in many unrelated fields (seemingly). I gave examples of finger-like patterns and only after publishing this buzz I found that some whales have finger-like structure instead of teeth so that they may take huge amounts of water, extract algae from it and throw water out. My dear friend I said I am on a discovery journey and I hope luck would one day knock on my door. Cause and effect are not always linear and they could reach a power law in their malti feedback routes. We have economic cycles, social repeating patterns of cycles, we have the stock markets wave-like cycles and so on. Do we understand fully the repeating patterns? No, otherwise all of us would be winners. Patterns help, but in way they are precise.

Part 2 To better understand these processes, and in order to understand life, I prefer not to look for explanations. I prefer to CAUSE the influencers of "BOI". When looking for an explanation on a complex process, you normally take a sample, and in a lab you make tests, so if it works in a sample, it could well be it works in the rest. High human values applied to any aspect of your life has always given good results. I preferer to put all my energies and time on it. Connected to it, I have recently published a post, because comments space is too small to explain extensively the concept I am trying to expose here. https://www.bebee.com/producer/@david-navarro-lopez/coincidence-or-causality-choose-one

Part 1 To your words "Rugged coasts, rugged leaves and I imagine rugged beliefs, opinions, ideas and you name it. Are their intangible fractals inside us organizing us without being aware of?... My understanding is as follows: The purpose of trying to trace whether our beliefs, opinions, and ideas (from now on, "BOI") are caused or organised by fractals inside of us, could be to understand these patterns and consequently, make changes to master them for enhancement. The influencers of "BOI" are multiple and changing in one single person. If you multiply this by the amount of the humankind, could be countless. If you multiply this for the interactions between them which would create other influencers...well, I am sorry to say I am not able to follow through and find a conclusion. And yet, is most probable that a conclusion could be found, but in my case, it would take from me an amount of energy and time I don't have.

My apologies for I have included the same image twice. I have now edited the post and replaced one of the two repeated images by the intended one. SOmetimes the mistakes are in front of our eyes, but we don't see them. I hope the new image improves the reading experience of the buzz.

Great and some ideas are crystallizing in my mind. You know this shall be the material for a dedicated buzz. Your comments and those of other commenters and of namita sinha bring many ideas. Your comment is rich and my responses to namita are in line with I responded to her valuable comments " In this way, collision occurs as a result of the need to achieve the optimum balance in an environment in which we can thrive". These comments are mind-blowing

Reading your multilayered comment Ali Anani triggered another possible "branch" (or paradox). Movement in general, and so the active movement of collision specifically, is the means through which we express our instinct for self-preservation. The "move" towards homeostasis, "within simple rules", to regulate temperature, hydration, and all other conditions must be the "driving force". In this way, collision occurs as a result of the need to achieve the optimum balance in an environment in which we can thrive. This process would fit with the what needs to happen when ideas are formed; how do they move, what do they need to do to achieve balance, do they need to collide with other ideas to move us towards a balanced environment in which we can thrive? Your answers Dr. Ali, lead to more questions.

Dear namita sinha- you wrote very intellectual comments. I am only reacting to your great comments. Yes, if I choose to ignore them then how may we develop? I find it extremely unfair not to respond to comments because they are part of the writing- an integral part and not an appendix. The way you summarized my comments is amazingly subtle and reflect your great desire to grow. Your comments make me think and grow.

I am still thinking about your comment dear Sara Jacobovici. Yes, ideas are molecules of different shapes and properties. They need to collide to produce new products. But are these collisions controlled by simple rules such as diffusion? In other words it is their controlled distribution that allows for collisions to occur or not. If ideas are to grow into big chains of form "Ideas Trees" then they must collided within simple rules. This is how polymers form. Diffusion becomes very important. So, distribution by diffusion controls the number of collisions. Again, shall explain in a greater detail. But your question kept my mind brewing. One more idea is the effect of environment. Back to leaves and how they produce photosynthesize. If heating by absorbed light is too much the chlorophyll pigment gets destroyed and no reaction shall proceed then. Will be back again as I am trying to accommodate your observation more subtly

namita sinha- you wrote- there ought to be more harmony as well - ideas should harmonize with and conserve our physical backgrounds and environment rather than destroying them ! Yes, and as I mentioned in my previous comment it is the fairness of playing games with equal opportunities to all parties. The leaves in the leaves have all equal opportunities to light. They do their job by getting smaller in size the higher they go. More, they act to balance their needs for lights and loss of water. If they have too much heat from sunlight they increase the efficiency of losing heat by modifying their shapes. In human societies we lack these features. The societal cycle of idea generation- idea exploitation- disturbance- force of law keeps repeating and eventually reach the stage of self-destruction. New birth of creative ideas starts again.

So, to continue with my previous example dear namita sinha no matter what a tree keeps the golden ration in its branching and in the distribution of its leaves so that it may use its resources well and fairly. When there are many trees around and resources are insufficient then playing filthy starts on a large scale. Human societies are the same. Innovators create great business opportunity from which entrepreneurs with high skills and talents exploit. They make so much money and the rich gets richer and the poor poorer. Troubles start and instead of redistributing wealth more fairly nations resolve to forcing the law. Eventually the poor reach critical masses and revolutions start. The cycle then repeats. Destruction of many products in the "forest of new products" are the same. Where is Nokia now, for example?

Lots of ideas to think about namita sinha. Yes, slow, but sure growth allows for room to adapt and learn. Sometimes, when the system has feedback effects of simple and repeating rules it night reach a level where its capacity hold more falls rapidly.it might each a level beyond its capacity. Within the spacetime the system may reorganize or become self-destructive. Self-organization os from within the system and not due to external factors. Look at trees, they become self-organizing such that the leaves are progressively smaller the higher they are. The high leaves are the smallest because they have more exposure to light. When the trees become overcrowded they plan a destructive game. They obscure light from each other or send their roots in all directions to deny other trees (except their siblings) nutrients and water. The trees eventually might burn destructively. In this case the remaining seeds may generate better quality trees. The self-organizing act may defer the need for destructive actions.

"So while there is persistence shown in nature in the form of a hard working stream of water or repeated gust of winds - causing acts of erosion / weathering/ and resulting ruggedness; there is adaptation and resilience shown by impacted life forms for survival and evolution". I say dear namita sinha that a good writer who understands his topic will have a great; yet simple conclusion. Your comment is an example of what I mean. Ruggedness in rocks may result by the effect of wind,; however ruggedness in leaves may result from their mode of fractal growth. No matter what, ruggedness serves a purpose.

You don't have to be apologetic dear debasish majumder. I fail to understand your point on hydrogen. It is not even involved directly in the photosynthesis reaction. Please clarify your point.

The chemist Sara Jacobovici- beautiful analysis. Yes, but we have to remember that there are factors such as the correct orientation of reactions and that the fruitful collisions ratio is low. However; I need little time to absorb your comment and respond later tonight. But you amaze with with your knowledge of chemistry

Thank you dear Cyndi wilkins for your beautiful emotions. These were precisely what evoked the idea of this buzz. I have been to New Mexico and many places where I had the opportunity to enjoy the Grand Canyon. Great memories evoked the idea of this buzz

Dear Ali Anani, I don't know what I learn more from, your questions or answers. In this Buzz, my attention was drawn to this description, "Crowds distribute in finger-like distributions to avoid collisions. When I say my mind is crowded with many ideas do these ideas instead of colliding find an escape gate so as to not collide?" We are set up with our proprioceptive sense to physically prevent us from colliding into objects and people. But I rather like the idea of ideas colliding. What would happen if we substituted the word molecule for the word idea? "Molecules move and collide Molecules are constantly moving. Their bonds vibrate and rotate. In gases, liquids and solutions molecules move around, bumping into one another. When molecules collide there is the possibility of a reaction taking place, but only if the colliding molecules: - have enough energy - are aligned correctly The more collisions there are between molecules with sufficient energy and correct alignment, the faster the reaction takes place. This is called collision theory. The more molecules present, the faster the reaction. Therefore reactions take place faster in concentrated solutions than in solutions that are more dilute. At high temperatures molecules have more energy than at lower temperatures. Therefore collisions are more frequent and the likelihood of the molecules having enough energy is greater. Consequently the rate of chemical reactions increases with increasing temperature."

It is fascinating the sensations these images evoke as I breathe into them...The scent of autumn in the leaves...the cooling effect of the snowflake...the feeling of strength in the rugged terrain of the coastline...and the magical realms that encompass the canyon...It reminds me of the very first time I visited the Grand Canyon...the power of being in its presence completely took my breath away...The pictures are beautiful, but nothing compared to being there...Amazing experience;-) Thank you for an energetic lift this morning Ali Ali Anani...Always a pleasure!
