The Pyramid and Balance Scorecard of Leaders
My previous buzz on the traits of leaders drew some mind-boggling comments. As much as frequently we use the word leader still there is no agreement of defining what the differentiating traits of great leaders. The comments made me think that if we visualize our approaches to who great leaders are then it may be easier to exchange thoughts on this topic. Here is the conclusion of my attempts.
I find it inspirational to try to figure out the balance scorecard for leaders. A leader who has the capacity to think creatively and combined with the right mindset, character and emotional intelligence shall be in a position to gain the trust of his followers or team members. The effect of this is that he/she shall be able to influence and persuade his followers with his vision. Employees will then be on course to work as teams and improve the internal processes. They shall be effective and efficient. Because of these attributes the teams shall engage in their work, work as a cohesive team and be happy to work. Because of this the happy and coherent employees shall be able to serve the customers more efficiently and effectively. Because of this the customers shall not only be loyal and repeat customers; equally well they shall influence and persuade their friend to follow steps and deal with the company. No wonder then revenues will increase and profits will increase as well.
The balance scorecard of leaders
It is possible now to couple the leaders’ balance scorecard with a modified Maslow’s Pyramid of needs. This pyramid needs modification to suit the needs of leaders to become great leaders. The basic needs center around first having a vision and the character mindset and emotional intelligence to pools followers to the magnetism of his/her vision and character. This way a leader has a built-in influence that shall help in persuading others to follow with zeal and engagement. Those basic traits will then need to be addressed toward fulfilling the vision with purposeful actions. The leader needs to have communication skills. These skills in turn and with the help of trust that resulted between the leader and followers to allow for “remote supervision” by allowing the team members to self-organize and be accountable for their work without hesitation. A long as the leader keeps leading with empathy the work shall proceed by learning and without fear of making mistakes because it is by making mistakes that they become stronger.

Thank you Tausif Mundrawala for highlighting who isn't a leader. Yes, all your points are valid. A leader should keep the team's cohesiveness and not the other way round by losing empathy and considerations for others. You wrote "One can't be redundant with old policies which become benchmark for all to follow". This is in accordance with what CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit commented earlier. Recalibration to have higher standard and not lower standard of leadership.

Precisely, as great leaders have it in them intrinsically to be aware of self. They take accountability of what they do. If they face problems they become stronger than they were before. No way they shall be stronger if fear prevails. I love your suggestion and I see strong reason why self-awareness should be placed where you suggest Harvey Lloyd. I am sketching the pyramid as you suggested to give a deeper look.

Great leaders are great because they keep their traits in spite of stress, cynicism or whatever challenge they face dear . Ordinary people might lose empathy or have their emotional intelligence eroded, but great leaders strive to keep these traits.

I would switch vision and character and then add to the bottom self awareness. A leader who is self aware of their shadow traits and how they impact their ego/persona will greatly enhance their character. More importantly self awareness will take the stop value out of fear, when we become aware what is putting it there. One self awareness trait i have found most useful is the vision is always only 50%. I cant know everything before i start. I must begin and learn along the way. Implying that unintended consequences are a part of the journey. If this is built in to my vision then i no longer fear these events, we manage through them. I find irony in the human leader. In discussing topics confidence exudes. But the weak leader folds when the law of unintended consequences shows up. This element of leadership is where we sharpen our skills and communications. If we get angry at them we lose the learning.

The number one critical factors that stop great leaders from moving on is fear as you indeed highlighted in your accomplished comment. In your opinion Harvey Lloydleaders with brave hearts has this as an innate trait or it can be learned? I think at part of overcoming fear is skill. Leaders who are fearful shall not be extraordinary leaders. To this I agree fully. May be the pyramid be adjusted to include what stops leaders with the potential to be great is the issue. I am thinking about how to best to include it in the pyramid. This is a great idea as one possibility to marry the Leaders' Pyramid with another one focusing on what stops leaders being great.

Your and we may need not only to recalibrate our words, but also actions that we do based on those thoughts. Recalibration is a word that should comment is an awakening call for all of us. Do we need to recalibrate our minds only, or our actions as well? I suppose as we recalibeate our minds our actions would also be calibrated. Calibration is a word that I expect to appeal to Bill King and I guess he would add his thoughts on this as well.

The idea of calibration occurred to me as I was reading this buzz and immediately I have placed it in my own learning pathway. "Learning" is the ultimate mind recalibration, even when it occurs as a reaction to being solitary - because ending up on one's own is still in relationship to others - so as a group or as an individual learning is the recalibration. Calibration as a subset of learning takes me off the marketing meme - where we creating image and illusion with our mind, rather than re-calibrating our mind because of relationship rather than because of image. Image and illusion is what the world has cast upon us, but mind recalibration can be viewed as a relationship with something we commonly refer to as authentic. Whatever reality really is and whatever images it may create to recalibrate our mind means it is synonymous with learning but there is a greater good within that recalibration and that greater good is "Freedom".

The living aspect of existence is organic and as we calibrate the mechanical, we should be able to more wisely succeed in transforming the mechanic to the organic. What this means is that we put life into lens we hold up to either interpret or shape the thinking we use to transform our world. There is a great wisdom in that - it also may reverse the traditional approach of creating a theory and observing practice, whereas calibration is taking practice and illuminating the theory. You are already in proceeding in that direction because much of your writing and thinking is already complexity based - therefore you are a great example of an individual who is constantly calibrating. The calibration is most evident in the way you relate to and absorb comments.

Yes, the foundation like a garden needs constant tending and what balances on top is a property of that. I would like to refer to this foundational work as personal and professional recalibration. Instead of building professional brands on top of sand, the lesson here for me is to focus on constant recalibration, and that includes values that we individually were unaware of or worse deliberately ignorant of. That is what makes a learning pathway foundational, an organic life is constantly recalibrating itself, so spiritual, psychological and cognitive recalibration should be a part of that contribution, if not a scorecard.

Few years back I wrote a presentation called StocDoc titled "Balancing the Imbalanced Scorecard". I wish had access to it today more than any time before. So, your comments resonates with me CityVP \ud83d\udc1d Manjit. It is not enough to have a balanced acorecard,; more is having it stay balanced. I agree with you. You highlight politics and irrationality as main factors. I add bloated self-value of leaders who lose their balance with time. If the "Internal;" element of leadership is distorted what is built on shall only be the same and even weaker. You explain for me Manjit why we have so rare great leaders.

I greatly appreciate your comment Bill King. You raise a hugely important point in that the balanced Scorecard of leaders has the virtue of minimizing wastes in all its forms. Time waste by employees being engaged and focused and doing the right things right. Material waste, ideas waste and any form of waste one may think of. Your point is essential.
