The Tree Metaphor Guide for Us

The Tree Metaphor Guide for Us

96c38e09.jpg

I paused to think while reading these lines " We all know that entrepreneurs and business owners have to think fast to survive. It's in their blood; moving quickly is a natural instinct to them. Still, it's difficult to overstate the importance of speed in business". This brought my attention the book titled "Of 2 Minds: How Fast and Slow Thinking Shape Perception and Choice" by the psychologist Daniel Kahneman. In this book the idea of "The automatic operations of System 1 generate surprisingly complex patterns of ideas, but only the slower System 2 can construct thoughts in an orderly series of steps" Our minds think in two systems. These are the fast and slow systems. System 1 operates automatically and quickly, with little or no effort and no sense of voluntary control. System 2 allocates attention to the effortful mental activities that demand it, including complex computations.

We have fast minds and slow minds and they serve different functions. We have a call for fast business and life, and I feel the need too for slow business and life. Or, am I wrong? I shall probe the value of this thinking starting by the tree metaphor first.

Fast growing trees provide great canopies for us. We enjoy them. However; it is because of their fast growth that we initially desired that we suffer. Trees that grow fast to high levels may suffer from large branches or whole sections of the tree simply splitting away from the trunk because of strong winds or heavy snow. Some trees start to decline as soon as they reach their maximum heights. We have seen businesses suffer the same effect. Fast growing trees may become fragile and weak and therefore subject to attacks by insects and bacteria. Some undesirable effect to us may result from under our feet. One example is the walnut tree. Its side roots may excrete a toxic chemical that kills other plants such as potatoes. We have seen some fast growing companies throw their toxic chemical in huge amounts and killing the fish in the sea or causing the warming up of our globe.

Fast businesses and fast growing trees remind me of fast talkers as well. When you speak too fast, you do the same thing with your spoken words. You don't leave any nice spaces of silence between phrases and sentences, thus making your listeners work too hard. Remember the key problem: listeners are intrinsically lazy. If you don't make it easy for them, they won't exert themselves to listen. These facts remind me of the great buzz of Sara Jacobovici titled "We Listen with our Balance". We are off balance when we talk fast and get the listeners inattentive. Talking fast shall not allow room for listening with our balances. Fast growing companies might be doing the same to the customers by talking too fast to them and providing them with too many products at short time intervals and getting them to listen without balance.

a43ede97.jpg

Our call for fastness must not neglect the side effects of going fast. Fast food is another example of what going fast might lead to- the least is to make customers wary of listening. Fast food may cause many problems such as increasing sugar levels in our bodies, increasing blood pressure and shortness of breath. Can we listen attentively being short of breath?

Do we need to go fast? I shall love your thoughts. If you have fast hopes, driving fast, fast changing ambitions and plans would you pause and listen with balance?

Would you recommend to beBee growing very fast?

Lance 🐝 Scoular- you are introducing a new way of communication. I remember on my first visit to Turkey I couldn't speak on Turkish word (I do now). I walked in a restaurant and none of the staff spoke English. So, I drew a chicken and they served me a nice meal. Now, you may write a guidebook for tourists using your language.

Slow is fast- I am covering this issue in my next buzz "Musical Ice". I love your experienced examples and more your conclusion wonder "Perseverance, tenacity and confidence of reaching the desired goal are necessary. I wonder if people who prefer fast have these qualities"? Do I agree with you? I say 100%. I thank you so much for your warming words and I feel the power to go on. I appreciate them as they come from you dear Louise Smith. I have a great respect for you.

I always enjoy your posts Ali Anani ! I really like your metaphorical writing style. Often it's almost poetry even though it is prose. I think translation from Arabic to English is quite beautiful and lyrical. I always feel refreshed after reading your writing ! I have had a very busy working life as a High school teacher, meeting up to 200 people daily and being responsible for their leaning and their demonstration of it. I rarely had 15 minutes to eat my lunch! I mainly taught Japanese and it is not something you can do fast ! It has to go from very easy and increase in difficulty slowly in an organised way. If it's too fast, students will leave. Only success will keep them so I needed to be very encouraging as well. I planned to leave teaching. I had a 5 year plan that turned into a 10 year one. But guess what - life got in the way. So I just made it part of my life and was a tortoise. Eventually I made it ! I am so glad as my life has a slower pace that is sustainable and less stressful. Perseverance, tenacity and confidence of reaching the desired goal are necessary. I wonder if people who prefer fast have these qualities? I find the older I get, the less likely for me to choose to go fast. Would I go on a 30 day world wind tour of Europe or stay in one country for 3 months? I think you can guess.

Going deeper into the "rabbit hole", there are two concepts we should put together and see what happens: -fast growing trees may develop invading roots that endanger the lives of other plants -But once this "roots" are well grown, as a first step, it will happen that the growth will increase exponentially, without risking its sustainability". The trend we can see is business, is that small companies are merged to bigger ones, until you can only find very few huge corporations, fighting fiercely to "eat each other", with the only purpose to monopolise the market. It would be not the first time that one of these monsters, once achieved its critical mass, break in thousand pieces to start over again. This is called capitalism, the evil of our age, as along the described process it is the lower stages of the society which suffers the consequences. In other words, when the elephants fight is the grass that suffers. Hopefully one day we will see that providing our own sustainability means to provide the sustainability of our environment too. But to achieve that, greed with no boundaries should lose its protagonism.

David Navarro López- this is a superb conclusion "In short, to your question "Do we need to go fast (or very fast)?" I would say yes. but not "Too Fast" to die of success.Very well-said, to the point and reflects reality. I have nothing to add except to say I fully agree with you.

You are a great thinker my dear David Navarro López. SOme fast growing trees may develop invading roots that endanger the lives of other plants. It is important that they grow and not cause death to others. This is only possible so that what you wrote eloquently may be fulfilled "But once this "roots" are well grown, as a first step, it will happen that the growth will increase exponentially, without risking its sustainability". I appreciate your idea that growth rate is proportional to our situation such as me speaking Arabic to you it always shall appear too fast to comprehend. In contrast, I I speek the same words to an Arab he shall find me slow. This is a great idea to consider,

Part 2 My believing is if Bebee was the first social media network, then its growth undoubtedly would have been fast. But it found a market which was already used to other social networks, and what it did is to supply the deficiencies other networks had. Thus, in my opinion, the growth speed of Bebee is quite slow, which is not a bad thing in this case, because to make something growth along sustainability, basing it on strong core values such as respect, talent, like Bebee does, takes time to make its "roots" to grow. But once this "roots" are well grown, as a first step, it will happen that the growth will increase exponentially, without risking its sustainability. In short, to your question "Do we need to go fast (or very fast)?" I would say yes. but not "Too Fast" to die of success.

David Navarro López

منذ 7 سنوات #25

Part 1 Dear Ali, you have done it again, you are a "mind challenger". Fast, slow, speed are concepts which can not be considered isolatedly. You always need a contrasting item to give the right idea. The growth of Bebee by Javier 🐝 beBee is been fast if you compare it to other social networks. Future will show us that other emerging phenomena will be much faster than this one. Then, we can conclude that speed is always related to something else, internal and external. I would like to introduce the particle "too" on this line of thoughts. "Too fast" and "too slow" concepts appears now. If you talk to me in Arabic, no matter how slow you do it, it will be always too fast for me. As in trees, if a business grows "too fast", it can well be that its growth ratio was bigger that the capability to make it grow along with the needed sustainability to make it last.

Gert Scholtz- I loved the way you described the two systems. In System it is indeliberate and uncontrolled versus System two which is direct (deliberate) and controlled. yes, these two systems shouldn't work in isolation and switching between the two is needed. You remind me of managers and leaders and that we need to have the qualities of both by swinging between a leader and then a manager and t strike a dynamic balance between the two.

Gert Scholtz

Ali Anani I read your post with interest. Some thoughts of mine: the main differences between Kahneman’s two thinking modes is that System 1 is not deliberate or controlled while System 2 is the opposite , it is conscious and directed. When these two systems are applied to business I think it is important to strike a good balance. Too much directedness and control and employees, customers and business growth may be stifled, too little control and the business becomes scattered and reactive. At times a certain level of looseness is important so employees can channel their own energies, customer behaviour can be observed and not prescribed, and the dynamic between business and all its stakeholders evolve naturally as energies impacting thereon play out. I don’t think there is a static midpoint between systems 1 and 2. Rather, business thinking and behaviour should to-and-fro between these ends of a spectrum, with business leaders giving oversight and direction to channel behaviour to benefit from both and to guard that one of the two extremes does not impact negatively on the business.

I don't consider any buzz of mine complete without a comment from you dear Sara Jacobovici. Your metaphors send my mind in different directions. One prime direction is how to make the best of mountaineering, riding on a roller coaster. The body and its need to balance is another great point. Dear Mohammed Sultan made also a great comment on the shared bozz on LI. I don't have his permission to post his comment here, but I would like to share my response. Here is my response: I understand that this issue is a dilemma dear @Mohammed Sultan. If we move slowly we shall be eaten. If we move too fast we may lose balance. I emphasize here the need for going fast, but in the process we need to take breathing periods. No matter what fast swimmers we are, still we need to pause and breathe. Thank you for sharing your beautiful comment. DO we need the metaphor of swimming as well? You leave me with much to think about dear Sara.

Sara Jacobovici

Your buzz is as thought provoking as ever Ali Anani. The influence of speed on balance merits the time and effort to see this concept through, as it manifests in the process of business success and growth. It also reminds me of two other processes; weight and rollercoasters vs mountain climbing. When we lose weight quickly, we tend to gain more weight after that loss. Losing weight slowly allows the metabolism to regulate and balance so that the weight loss, over time, remains consistent. On a roller coaster, we climb up slowly but we don't reach a place where we stop, observe and asses, we simply go over the top and drop speedily down. This process differs from mountain climbing, where, on our own two feet, we maneuver the paths, stop along the way, observe, assess and actually begin to have the summit in sight. Once we reach the peak, we have the time to stop and see the view as well as look at the path that led us to this point. Much to think about, thank you Dr. Ali. Thank you, also, for the mention. Much appreciated.

My dear Ali Anani has written is talking about the difference between the horse and the donkey behaviors. It is a metaphor about an issue which begins with a lot of energy (salida de caballo andaluz) with a great initial impetus, but it is abandoned unfinished (parada de burro manchego) and suddenly with no constancy. Both animals (horses and donkeys) behave in very different ways which creates a huge antithesis between the beginning and the end of any business. 😘

Excellent post Ali Anani. Having worked in a financial services call centre for a major institution, I experienced first hand the pressure of going fast. It was relentless. We had three minutes to engage in a meaningful conversation which really meant, selling a product or service. The analytics used to breakdown each and every call was overwhelming. The stats that were never shared were the % cancellations of the product or serves within 24hrs. Fast talking, Deal Making...Close = Toxic Relations. Thanks for bringing this important topic back to centre.

Thank you Dear Ali Anani for sharing your impressive post, by its relevant questionning. Maybe, every conception of business is invariably accompanied by a certain experience of time which is implicit in it, conditions it, and thereby has to be elucidated. Similarly, every industry is first and foremost a particular experience of time, and no new culture is possible without an alteration in this experience. The original task of a genuine revolution, therefore, is never merely to “change the world,” but also—and above all—to “change time. Excellent approach ;)

Ali Anani, in my opinion, growing sustained over time and slower is good because your grow is stronger, more solid. Going fast is a great sensation. Speed is also a nice sensation but also is risky. I think we need a balance between going fast and growing in a strong way :-) It is not easy to reach that balance. Thanks again for your great buzz ! You made me think a lot and I love that :-)
