The last few days have seen me engaged with a wave of email exchanges with Harvey Lloyd on many topics related to using the DiSC Profile in leadership, negotiations; reverse thinking, risk handling and team-building. All commentors on my last buzz contributed comments that enriched the discussions and the determination to study these topics in further detail.

DiSC profiles the behavior of people in four main categories. These are: Decisive or Dominant (problem-oriented), Influential (people-oriented), Steady or stabilizing (pace-oriented) and Compliant (procedures-oriented). In real terms we may label the DiSC profile as a means of communication assessment profile. Our dominant category will shape the way we communicate with others.

Harvey and I resolved to a simple graph to make the concepts easier to understand. A simple graph to reveal that under its skin remains many points open for discussions and recommendations from the interested readers. We find the graph is of practical use in many domains in our lives.

Let us start with one simple graph. This is a real case in which the leader or employee just to show his D dominance.

927388b9.jpg

If we have complete empathy with no action then no work will be done. If we have full action with no empathy the risk a task shall not be completed are very high. Therefore, the risk of having a leader with very D (dominant) character shall be high as well.

Before moving on to elaborate on what happens when we add the remaining iSC characters on the graph or the DiSC points of team members we need to make a pause here. We need to understand more fully the risks of D behaviors and the risk of having an ambiguous purpose.

It is timely here to introduce the WPD Factor here. This factor stands for Wonderment, Passion and drive. You want people to work towards a purpose with curiosity (wonderment) and passion to keep their drive to realize a purpose/goal. D profile may hinder the progress of work accordingly. My search of literature led me to a post that is a must read. I strongly recommend it. The author Todd Kashdan has covered related ideas in his wonderful post. In one paragraph he wrote “…because curiosity — a state of active interest or genuinely wanting to know more about something — creates an openness to unfamiliar experiences, laying the groundwork for greater opportunities to experience discovery, joy and delight”. He went on to write “With practice, we can harness the power of curiosity to transform everyday tasks into interesting and enjoyable experiences. We can also use curiosity to intentionally create wonder, intrigue and play out of almost any situation or interaction we encounter”. For this to happen It is far important to keep healthy relationships and show an attitude of openness and genuine interest. If not, the risk of not achieving the goal is high indeed. If we are going to find a meaningful purpose or calling in life, chances are good we will find it in something that unleashes our natural curiosity and fascination. Indeed, curiosity is the entry point to many of life’s greatest sources of meaning and satisfaction: our interests, hobbies and passions.

While being passionate about something naturally renders you curious to know as much as you can about it, it also works the other way around: The more curiosity you can muster for something, the more likely you are to notice and learn about it, and thus the more interesting and meaningful it will become for you over time.

I finish this part with another quote from the same reference. It states “If we are going to find a meaningful purpose or calling in life, chances are good we will find it in something that unleashes our natural curiosity and fascination. Indeed, curiosity is the entry point to many of life’s greatest sources of meaning and satisfaction: our interests, hobbies and passions.

The other source of risk is purpose. From Purpose to Impact - Harvard Business Review covered this topic with immense depth. “Your leadership purpose is who you are and what makes you distinctive…”. The article highlights purpose-driven leadership and the need to define purpose. There is a huge “latent risk” in failing to do so. This is evidenced from this quote from same articlewe’ve found that fewer than 20% of leaders have a strong sense of their own individual purpose. Even fewer can distill their purpose into a concrete statement”. The article goes on to sate “your purpose is your brand, what you’re driven to achieve, the magic that makes you tick. It’s not what you do, it’s how you do your job and why—the strengths and passions you bring to the table no matter where you’re seated”.

Amazing as what started as a simple and “innocent” graph evolved into complex issues. We need your feedback, your wonderment, your passion to keep our drive to go on. We have a grand purpose- to communicate in a way to make our purpose more crystalline and that we develop our understandings.

your comment is one of the driving reasons that triggered my mind to come up with a modified DiSC graph Joanne Gardocki. In a weeks tjime I shall publisg this work. Yes it is not the same to be high or low on D for example. The two have different behaviors. I hope the modified graph will show this fact.

I am unfamiliar with the PtC concepts and discussions. Given your question though i would propose that yes, a fifth element has emerged. Servant Leadership. This concept embodies the whole of leadership through serving with guided influence based on the broader principals of corporate responsibility (Internally and Externally). Humans are the caretakers of organizations. Some leaders "take control" but control is elusive as you view the dynamics of an organization. I believe the popularity of personality profiling has gained review because our servant selves don't like what we see when the controlling leader herds creativity down a stifling path. Servant leaders harness the best of humanity in each of their team members. I agree when we discuss the collaborative leader as the best. I see this as a view from the outside looking in. The word collaborative does explain what we observe. From an personal discipline though, i would call it servant leadership as a personal paradigm. This results to collaborative opportunity. Your question has extended the thought process and made me think. Thanks.

Thank you for your kind assessment of my profile Harvey Lloyd...I will work very hard to live up to that;-) In this I also agree... "But more often than we expect its not really a power grab as much a scream of self preservation. To feel safe in a work or social environment, each of us require different signals. Also an environment i find safe can become very unsafe when i include my family." You can bet your boots on that...How many people are easily manipulated when the well-being of their families is threatened. Most of us I'd imagine. And I love your comment on Phil;s buzz... "The skill of empathy can be deployed, but until we believe that we all share a journey and believe in each other it will be difficult to exact success from the skill." And to you Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee...thank you for allowing me to share a link to my buzz here...I would not do that without invitation;-) https://www.bebee.com/producer/@cyndi-wilkins/respect-simplicity-and-humility#c6

Again you skilfully discuss two probalities for cerain behaviors. In a previous comment on the behavior of D you mentioned the need to tell if this tendency is drunkness for power or out of fear. Great points to be alert to.

very true your comment is Lisa 🐝 Gallagher and I are trying to understand more how best to relate the WPD factor to the DISC profile. Some profiles are very logical for example and to find a way to awaken their passion is one of the issues that we are looking into.

Cyndi wilkins Your comments would state that you are probably a high S within the DiSC profile. I share that letter with you. With D being my dominate letter. So this is something we share as being vigilante in identifying folks who destabilize and environment, no matter how they do it. I would want to note it is the motivation of the power grab/destabilizing, as i see it, that requires investigation before determination. I agree with your comments surrounding the sociopath power grabber. But more often than we expect its not really a power grab as much a scream of self preservation. To feel safe in a work or social environment, each of us require different signals. Also an environment i find safe can become very unsafe when i include my family. My larger point in the DiSC discussion is that we have the tools to discern whether we are dealing with pathological power grabs or if we are dealing with self preservation. A secondary point would be that we can help folks in the area of self preservation and reduce their stress levels and increase their creativity. Again, though, it would be difficult for me to assist the person who i have measured as a power grabber, so i must investigate. We are talking a very few interactions before we discern the motives. Now once we identify the motives have at it in what ever course of action seems appropriate. I am afraid these days in the hype of media we tend to label and act. Frankl advised us, there is a gap between stimulus response and, we should use it to form our own opinion. Media is working hard with their polarization and labeling to close the gap, so we might agree and by the soap powder from their advertisers.

I have given your question some thought and it is a good question. I believe we may start with WPD within a cycle of proactive processes. This is often met with some push back as others give immediate thought to ideas. This has the effect of diminishing our WPD and causing us to stop. So this brought the question forward how do some continue to hold on to WPD within adversity? Real or perceived. Following this line of thought i believe i would answer your question by stating that WPD is a result. WPD is the result of many cycles of empathetic execution of goals and roles within life whereby you pushed through on small items. With each item growing in complexity that you have applied WPD. The shield of faith grows around WPD as the scale of goals grows. One of the major bastions of great leaders is they believe in their people, goals and abilities. WPD is met with resistance but the cycles of success have created a defense system around the excitement. All this to say that DiSC is one of the defense weapons we can utilize personally to protect our WPD when executing around our goals. Through understanding communications we may be able to reduce the impact of comments by others to simple misunderstanding and proceed with WPD. The better we communicate in a goal oriented environment, the more cycles our WPD will survive. The more cycles, the more faith/confidence our WPD will mature in to.

The discussions here exemplify the value of leading with WPD factor prevailing. You bring a new question to my mind. Even though it may sound trivial, but delving into it shows it is not. Your comment also reminds me of a previous comment here by Harvey Lloyd in which he attended to the fact that D people may act sometimes because of thei fear. We need to "Trust our emotions". Even if we have, it is all in the effort to make sense of the world as we see it Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee...I see several differing schools of thought...none of which I claim to be an expert...I have a great deal of respect for everyone who is courageous enough to put their thoughts out there at the risk of being challenged...and sometimes outright vilified...It is most often at those times I try to enter in to the conversation to create some semblance of balance...and I readily admit...I often fail. To all the commenters here. I have a suggestion. We know of great communicators. And how deeply they influence others. It might be worthy then to revisit their DiSC profiles and relate these profiles to the WPD factor. May be then we get new illuminations. I wish to share with yoiu now an idea that crossed my mind while exchanging messages with the spiritual Lisa Vanderburg in our previous comments. Now our wonderment is kindled again on a larger scale and so are our passion and drive. This loop of the triad keeps scaling up. Are we having then a fractal WPD loop? My answer is yes as long as we don't assume and proceed by facts. I wonder if this fractal loop is to the taste of the fractal Dr. Milos Djukic. New ideas keep poppong up and the wonderment initiates again. Do you agree Harvey?

Ali Anani

this expanded explanation of my comment is splendid Harvey Lloyd. In fact we have new inroad to explore. We need to identify thr emotions acting behind the screen. Is it fear? Is it egoism? Is it fear of what such as exposure? One letter such as D could have more than one driving emtions. I believe these may changd from one situation to another. Great thoughts and your inspiration is undeniable Harvey.

Harvey Lloyd

منذ 6 سنوات #85

#105
If i could rephrase your comment in DiSC language "One example is the tendency to bring side conflicts to satisfy their dominant letter." I agree in some instances the red herring is cast out as a self serving power grab. But more often than not the red herring is cast out due to fear their dominant letter has manifested in to. With good communications through understanding the driving letter we can discern whether its a power grab or a letter that has a fear attachment. Most importantly by distinguishing between them we can take a course of action as a leader. Addressing the fear attached to the letter requires a private I approach to help the individual detach the fear. The self serving power approach, well lets say that meeting will go quite differently and most likely wont include influence but more a D approach. Given these two approaches we can see that if we "ass-u-me" and get it wrong we could wreck an otherwise excellent team member. Great thoughts.

Ali Anani

منذ 6 سنوات #84

#104
yes and Harvey Lloyd you highlight a great pointt and reminder as well. We must not deviate from purpose; else communication goes chaotic. One example is the tendency to bring side conflicts to draw the focus from the main point and to focus attention to them. We see this in real life where some people struggle hard to attract the camera on them. It is not only purpose-driven leadership; it is also purpose-driven communication.

Harvey Lloyd

منذ 6 سنوات #83

#101
In the end we need all letters to contribute to the bottom line. More importantly the human dynamic requires effective inputs into society. We need to feel relevant in our life setting. My contention is that everyone can develop a good "I" (Influence) regardless of your dominate letter. We can all influence better from our position. To some its a developed skills (Me, work in progress) to I's its natural. This is the real strength of profiling you personality. Knowing your strengths and then learning the skills you need to apply those strengths. One of the thoughts that comes forward is agreement and influence are not synonymous. I may influence someone to understand but they still may disagree. The goal of influence is that each in the communication understand the WPD driven purpose. Not in all cases does this mean agreement. My concern is that when we don't use influence the disagreement is usually within communication and not purpose. So we communicate in a vacuum with the purpose outside. This has been a wonderful thought provoking exchange.

Unless the D shows up in strong battle armor it is difficult to distinguish between the I/S as the secondary letter. I choose the I for you because it looks like you have been through some very destabilizing events where you were a major influence. DS is one of the rare combinations and usually explosive. Couldn't see you there. You are an interesting man and would bet a afternoon of exploration with you would be fascinating. "IMO, this part of a profile is the dryest and least motivating" This statement is where DiSC is able to take the factual and transform it into wonderment. I have two very High C's on staff. We are training on the DiSC and trying to take the C from a standalone feature to an I influencing position. Some of our meetings have been so dynamic, and lead by our C folks. The C folks are learning to see the WPD in others and nurture that through the I component with their "Facts". One of the key points we have been utilizing with our C folks is that the C represents a library of facts. Stand at the I or influence letter and let the WPD of the experience tell you which book to use. C's tend to need the facts displayed and understood before the influence can begin. We have merely integrated the two within the same communications by using the I to drive the C. These are new habits being formed but i have enjoyed watching these two gentlemen learn new ways to committal form their strengths. They have also reflected that they feel more effective and fulfilled in their communications. This is the beauty of self awareness and understanding our own profile. No you and i should be natural enemies. When two D's collide a fight usually breaks out. But through life experience and drive to better understand the human condition we both have learned that, just because my D exists i need not define me. I would submit that we came to the natural conclusion of our D's long before DiSC was understood. DiSC merely places labels on what we have determined through life experience. You have learned to express your D through your I. A communications milestone many never achieve. I would imagine early in your life your D looked quite different than it does now?

I would suggest that our communications whether deep or shallow represents a need within our mind or heart. We seek understanding naturally, so we communicate. This concept was presented to me in much more stark way, Everything in the world is owned or controlled by others, if you want it you will have to learn to communicate effectively. Then it would translate into we have two purposes with each need we produce. One the satisfaction of the need and second how do i communicate effectively to achieve the need. This sounded simple when i stumbled across this concept. Myself i introduced the risk profile concept as a third leg to the stool. By adding the risk, what am i willing to bet on serving the need, it made me go back and reevaluate the need based on the bet. Sounds circular but in the end of the thought process i was better able to communicate through proper channels and meet the need. Inquiry as always is intriguing, you ask great questions that inspire discussion.

Thanks for your kind words and i enjoy exploitative thought. Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee is an example of thought and what happens when approaches the speed of light. I enjoy the profile view as it gives me a perspective of communications. My profile is pretty demanding and is most likely not the way to communicate in most circumstances. DiSC offers us incite into how to say the same thing differently and get results. As to the wonderment of a child. This was a very awkward journey for my profile. The dreams of a child transcend the fantasy into the self preservation within maturity. This really represents a fork in the road. A journey through man's world can strip us of our wonderment as competition grows. You got an A i got a C you are good i am less, etc.... My journey took me away from that view of competition. I realized that wonderment comes in complimentary, not competition. But you better have some big faith and thick skin in this view. You go against the grain when you communicate and the competitive folks see you as weak and smell fear. But i had to learn things like DiSC to be able to remain complimentary instead of competitive. Your questions run deep and DiSC is merely a tool we use to deal with our choice of complementary in a competitive world.

I would add that even the we both are D's the graph would answer the question. The team work here to produce something had a very low risk profile for me. So i am able to tap into my weaker letters. Given your drive and commitment to post quality content i would place the risk factor higher. Looking at the process from this perspective helps establish who is supporting and who is driving. In cases where the risk is equal you may see a little more heated discussion. But again great leaders stay focused on the purpose/goal. Who is driving shouldn't be a factor, getting there is what matters

My letters are Dominate D and secondary is S. This is a dangerous combination. I seek stability with a vengeance. I think it would be easier to state that i struggle with other D's. Specifically if a D is producing destabilizing signals. Now if you want to look at marriage most DiSC combinations choose to marry their opposites. My match book psychology degree tells me that the opposites seem to fill something in each other. DiSC is really a proactive approach of how you can communicate based on others hearing rather than your own narrative driving. As to dream team? just made some connections that may help in understanding the linear concepts of what has been introduced. Self-preservation leads to purpose, this instills WPD while DiSC is how we share or communicate this purpose and passion. DiSC is more the bullhorn for WPD. Great thoughts and discussion.

Part II As Harvey says, "The DiSC offers us some insight into how different personalities might hear the same message. Therefore giving us an opportunity to change some wording that all may hear the same message". Sara says "DISC is the behavior/action of an individual being assessed and WDP are the qualities (that exist or not) which influence the outcome of those behaviors and actions." Using DISC and WPD might be just what leaders need to inculcate on their journey, for its not greay how successful a leader was but it is the legacy of followers he leaves behind to continue his journey and leadership style. Ghandi brought in the peace driven leadership style and till date that is the only method of successful leadership style that put the interests of both the leaders and his team in the forefront. An intruiguing WPD buzz A must read for all.

you are one of the three people that shaped up the WPD factor dear Lisa Vanderburg. You bring an important point to the discussions. It is about the need to act on it so that it may not fade. You are correct. On the other end it could be self-fuelling and form a fractal cycle as I explained to in our exchange of messages.

Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee After reading all the comments on this buzz I am in wonder and awe of the passion we share, the purpose driven comments below and the drive we create to enable the WPD ship is sailing right. Our Purpose driven passion is the oil that keeps the engine running, the result/destination ahead creates the wonder and curiousity we all need and the drive is the most important, as it is born out of our purpose driven self and the ones around us. It can easily be induced/lit up and similarly drown if not sustained. We can be the drive to our passions alone the percentage is low, but with the support of many others we can go long way. I love that you attached leadership with WPD and DIsC profile. A much needed discussion among great leaders.

thank you dear again. The ltrics you quote are just enough to prove how the pwd factor is so important as you outlined. You remind me of the blind person who was asking for help. He had a board nearby asking people for help. Little help came till somebody voluntarily changed the appeal . he wrote please help me enjoy the summer as you do. Help poured in. The wpd factor has more value than I ever thought before.

this is a forward-looking comment dear Sara Jacobovici#46. I hope your time would allow for it. Surely, Harvey and I shall take care of your comment. You are an integrator meaning process oriented. You run a low risk in your communication. I did my DiSC profilr iam dominant and then influencer. This means that i have a higher risk in my communication. You act arisk-buffer if we we in one team.I shall explain in graphs soon. Thank you Sara. Your comment shows your integration and comprehension of the buzz. No one shall feel offended by your comment. This is the proof that you run a low risk in your communication.

My apologies ahead of time as I didn't have a chance to read the comments. If my response has been already addressed, please point that out to me. Thanks. #2 #5 A very dynamic and thought provoking post Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee. First, I think you are a great example of how you take the engagement with your readers to new levels. Now, as I have referred to myself as an integrator, I very much appreciate how you bring two areas which are often discussed separately, and weaved their influence together. You write: "DiSC profiles the behavior of people in four main categories. These are: Decisive or Dominant (problem-oriented), Influential (people-oriented), Steady or stabilizing (pace-oriented) and Compliant (procedures-oriented)…It is timely here to introduce the WPD Factor here. This factor stands for Wonderment, Passion and drive." DISC is the behavior/action of an individual being assessed and WDP are the qualities (that exist or not) which influence the outcome of those behaviors and actions. I can imagine a part two to this post, Dr. Ali, that shows us how the individual profile, using DISC and WPD, reflects on the corporate culture or brand.

I always consider myself to be a small voice. The Hierarchy in the US is awesome indeed. The Powerful revel in their power. If the system causes damage, those that do the damage charge to fix it. I think I am done here. I'm a bit old to escape my braces, but escape them I will. Some great thoughts as we pursue our curiosity and dreams if we are willing to push the thought that far. Various profiles of communication styles, like DiSC help transfer that excitement and curiosity to others by understanding the dynamics that help others to hear/see our passion. The risk value is really an all encompassing word. In the case of a new product or service we could probably change the word risk to passion. In leadership if we are over the top passionate about something, meaning our curiosity and dreams are the main driver then we should probably place the risk point higher on the scale. I know for myself when i am passionate about something i have to be careful where i place the risk point. Being a strong D i can become commanding and not see the value in other profile types. This causes me to use caution in placing the risk point so that i might be reminded, the curiosity will find the success if i allow all profiles to participate.

This shows some major insight into the human dynamic of maturing. The discussion of the DiSC profile aspect is merely a small speck within the major concept you introduce. I can speak for myself that the DiSC and Meyer's-Briggs was a first step in me becoming self aware of filters that had placed in the brain long ago. I am unique but so is everybody else. Grasping this single concept helped me on my journey of self awareness. Your comments humble me.

Economics aside i would say that DiSC is more a communications understanding than a classification. By understanding your dominant letter(s) you can better determine how to communicate your ideas to those who have different letters. I don't see the profile as being much different than me learning a different langauge so i might communicate more effectively within someone else's native language. In leadership we find ourselves having to express complex concepts in the beginning. What a leader says does not necessarily imply what was heard. The DiSC offers us some insight into how different personalities might hear the same message. Therefore giving us an opportunity to change some wording that all may hear the same message.

I wonder if you and I Harvey Lloyd would produce the DiSC graph based on our discussions how it would look like. I tell you that I found a way to include the experience mapping or comments-exchange mapping using similar graphs. Step by step I shall share the results. We started our discussions with some differences. However; we turned those differences into a series of buzzes constructively. One day I hope to share with the readers this experience. I say it loudly- without your exchange of comments with me those possibilities would have remained as mirages.

i guess, the wonderment, passion and drive largely depend on a person class which he is belonging. so it is the class virtually determine in what issue he will generally interested. his economic status plays the major role to determine his desire and drive. however, nice buzz sir Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee! enjoyed read and shared. thank you for the share sir.

You are very correct Harvey Lloyd. "In almost all cases a leader needs to influence the letters of the team members to see their dominant letter from an influence position. Specifically not to introduce facts or opinions of their dominant letter, but rather interpret their thoughts into influential statements based on their dominant letter". You define the role of leaders in novelty. I shall try my best to elaborate on these line in the following buzzes. Thank you.

Ali 🐝 Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee has produced an amazing buzz and i have had the privilege of supporting the effort. It's been a fascinating journey of understanding.

Harvey Lloyd

Secondarily, when we begin to place the dominant letters of those we lead on the graph we begin to understand how each team member will view the proposed risk level. In almost all cases a leader needs to influence the letters of the team members to see their dominant letter from an influence position. Specifically not to introduce facts or opinions of their dominant letter, but rather interpret their thoughts into influential statements based on their dominant letter. The influential statements should support abating the risk. These statements or suggestions should be futuristic in an action format. This is a particularly difficult place to place the DSC person. Especially if the letter is a dominating factor of their own leadership. In almost all cases the end goal includes a influence of customers, employees or marketplace type activities. Getting the three letters to view their strengths from the "I" position will insure that the best options will be discussed and brought out from the group. To better understand this thought some background research on not only your profile but the profile of others is warranted. A leader has to be able to steer conversation away from dominant letters and sustain a creative conversation from those strengths within the influence arena.

First of all you did an awesome job of introducing the graph to assist us in understanding the paradigm of personalities. I would suggest that by viewing the graph empty of data first we can understand the variables that exist. The risk line from right to left represents the amount of pressure a specific task or purpose may hold for the leader. By placing a percentage value here we are claiming the importance and time scale of the leader in presenting the purpose or resolving issues. Once placed we can now see the four letters access and need. The higher the risk factor we place the more decision oriented we need to be, the lower the risk factor the more we can consider using the strengths of the SC dominant team members. All letters are important regardless of risk, but seeing the chart blank allows to better align the resources based on the level of risk.
