Softwares for writing (review)

Softwares for writing (review)

There is a lot of writing softwares, and I tried a few, so I'm sharing my experiences and thoughts about them. Maybe you know a few more not on the list, or maybe you know all of them.
This post is more focus on people writing with Word/Open office or similar and looking for a change with some advice.

Why a writing software ?

My better advice to authors/writers it to find a good software to write with. I used Open Office for a while but I just don't like writing there (or Word it's similar). I don't mind writing a long page on a blog writing window (wordpress or beBee like) but If you write a book you need editing (and more if you self-publish).

Ommwriter

Very good looking, inexpensive, available on both MAC&Windows + tablet. I have the computer & tablet version.

It's distraction FREE. Meaning, you only have you writing page on your screen.

You can change the background color, and if you need to have some music, there is sound or music (the sound on the video is from the software). The developer said your experience it's better if you use the software with headphones which is true because you can really focus on your work.

BUT !

You can't edit - I mean , don't write a 500pages novel with it.

Perfect for - poems, short stories, ideas...etc

Another warning ! If you write in a language with accents and if you copy/paste it in another place, it's going to be awful looking, so beware.

Regarding the price, I got mine for 5$ or similar but it was a few years ago now.

Scrivener

THIS IS THE SOFTWARE you need to use to write a book. It's a software made for writers.

I use it a lot.

You can put everything in one place, drafts, characters drafts, ideas etc...You start each chapter on a new "page" and at the end, you have a compiled book just pushing one button (magic !).

It can be very strange to use the first time if you switch from Word (or similar) to Scrivener, but in my opinion, this is the best ever

It should cost around 50$ (but hey, today it's black Friday). And it's a very very good investment. I wrote a book with this software.

There is a version for Ipad, I didn't try it, but the comments are very good too.

Final Draft

Well. This is one is best for screenwriting, so if you are this type of writer, it's for you. I have it on my computer but I never use it as I have no need for it.

It looks very nice. And there is a lot of good reviews too.

It's a bit more expensive 140 - 200$ depending the sale. So think about your needs before purchasing.

There is a version for Ipad too.

If you have any questions feel free to let a comment or PM me. I've been using Scrivener and Ommwriter for the past 4 years now.

I hope it helps.

Best wishes

#14 You're welcome. Ommwriter is simple to use and will get it very fast (maybe it could be a great start). Scrivener has more features. I hope you find the time to do what you like.

Great! As I mentioned in a later buzz of yours - all of this software is blue ocean to me. Downside is that this requires me to make some time to study all of this and the irony of this is that I must reduce professional work time in order to increase personal learn time - where learning is a flow rather than a sacrifice. In the New Year I look forward to see how I accommodate this exploration.

#5 I never used it but I'm sure you can. The best would be to ask to the Software support if it works with.

Very useful. Thank you. There seems to be a higher percentage of writers here on beBee in the English speaking version per capita of general membership in the same area, versus other languages. Wow that was a sentence I should try to edit. LOL
