Control Freak Incorporated

Control is at the core of the mindset of most organizations, for control is the primary or principal psyche of the ages which have led to the realization of this moment of time that at this juncture has reached the mid-point of 2016.

It is an unchallenged assumption which will continue to dominate for the simple reason that domination is an easier conception than the unknowns of the alternative to control.  Whether it was handed down by religion or owners does not matter, for whatever has been centuries in the making since the beginnings of civilization is not taking stage right now or in the immediate future.  Nor does it make sense to declare control as cancer because it is not a disease.

Control is not an affliction as much as freedom is not either and where freedom needs control in order to be free, that is the healthy reality of control.  If control is not a disease then what it is it.  Control is a subversion and the principle subversives of control are not controllers but us.

We are the subversive because when control becomes too much for us, revolution does ensue.  If today we are paid members of Control Freak Incorporated it is us who are the principal control freaks.  It makes the job of being a controller a very easy one, because a leader who had to make something out of freedom now is placed in a daunting challenge.   So long a leader can make something out of control the leader is serving us the willingly controlled. 

Why should anyone embrace the principal product of freedom which is uncertainty.  The product of control is the certainty that has been discussed ad nauseam - even on television : 

Revolution therefore is simply an outcome of the product of control.  One does not need revolution in order to experience freedom, for revolution destroys.  If the product of freedom is principally uncertainty, uncertainty does not necessarily need to emanate from a destructive place - it is best an emanation from a creative place.

Both creativity and innovation are admired traits, but they are also practices that create a resistance to change.  Who on this good Earth of ours wants to resist change other than those who are citizens of control.   If the main character that represents freedom in the TV series "The Prisoner" then how did he get to be No.6 when there plenty of people already there before him?

It turns out that in this particular episode No.6 is the candidate that is annointed to stand against No.2 - when everyone in the village is a symbolic representation of No.2

"I am not a number I am a free man"

In any organization no matter how enlightened the brochure, the annual report and the organizational video depicts, is only enlightened by pockets of freedom that are either tolerated or won by the particular leader who creates such islands of freedom - otherwise these islands freedom are simply visible landmarks in a sea of massive control.  There is fish everywhere.

I am under no illusion that the biggest challenge is not that of some nameless controller or some perverse doctrine or dogma that is controlling the people, but people whose words of freedom are expressed as a form of control.  Why would I want to rob people of their need for certainty, but I can create my own island of freedom and thus stand a little bit higher than the bottomless ocean, even inside an organization that is built of the bricks of control freak incorporated.  The nameless controller is the system and the system is all of us combined.
