Metacognition is Prolix

Metacognition is Prolix

3fcfef02.jpgWho knows if the branches of our thoughts match in anyway the branches of neurons or the branches of the tree of life that emerges because we have the capacity to think.  It is here I am reminded of Jiddu Krishnamurti's chief observation that the central dilemma in our thinking is our own thoughts - we must be the master of our own thoughts and not assume that thought is who we are.  Thought happens to be a resource we have at our disposal and because thought is circumstance, this can also inform the act of metacognition - to think about our own thinking.

My emails in the course of club interactions are series of streams of consciousness at times but more often they are simply moments that mirror my preference for thinking out aloud.  So it is that any act of metacognition cannot follow a straight path, and the process of insights and awareness are never linear.  It is what gets a few people fascinated by the subject of fractals, because we are constantly looking for patterns, but the reality of insights is they emerge from a prolix sea of thought.

Now I imagine what would an Alistair Cooke of Metacognition look like?  What would those letters be that instead of going out to the world are going to the core of our own consciousness. It is Cooke's radio session that is a fascinating way of thinking.  Even Cooke described it as "free association" but he also allowed a process to emerge from that free association and in the end my young mind was greatly influenced by this radio style Cooke exhibited.

The mind itself can be a highly fragile instrument especially if we are prone to anxiety, obsession or overwhelm and so it is that the prolix neural connections that is free association is not for everyone, indeed it is probably not for a majority of persons - especially if they were educated through the stultifying effect of commercial media and mass media entertainment. The mentality here is not a broadcast, it is a metacognition.  The challenge for me is knowing what is actually meaningful in a sea of thought.  What seemed like an easy idea to execute such as "The Prolix Letters" is actually much more challenging thing then I could ever have imagined.  These are my thoughts and we live in a society predicated on consumption.  The true waste is our life as consumers, whereas the prolix nature of our unwritten thinking contains us in it.

It is not that you disrespected academia Harvey, I think it is very important to reiterate the value of specialization hand in hand with importance of the generalist - I want to keep punching against the notion of them and us - it isn't a notion that is found in your words, but we do live in a polarized political climate and that polarity is the result of divisions rather than unity.

The way I look at it Harvey is this way, the door to the left brain is respecting what the professor, the doctor, the lawyer, the engineer etc knows. The door to the right brain is opened with the exclaimation and wonder "Oh! and now look at all this other stuff !!!". We live in a world where more and more people no longer respect experience and at the same time are afraid of exploration. This is not good in the present moment and it slows down our evolution towards humanity as being for all who want it.

Personally for me metacognition is an antidote to groupthink but it is not for everybody. A lot of psychic disorder can result from the chaos that comes from constantly opening new doors, if/when such opening floods the mind with uncertainty and fear. Yet a child-like disposition that opens doors for curiousity is something that is natural to the human spirit, but we as a society shut those doors. As the Beatles sang "Think For Yourself" is only a song necessary as much as a society that fears that - especially an education system that provides a processed education. The knowledge of knowing self is different to technical and knowledge education - we do need to share subject matter expertise but we should not be conditioned in the process like a Borg (as in Star Trek) to serve a particular silo or professional master. It is in being able to look across we open doors that liberate our thinking, rather than engage in chaotic thinking or entertaining novelty. It did not hurt Leonardo Da Vinci in doing that but in his case I think he enjoyed being a renaissance man.

The "who is doing the thinking" takes us down two other paths - human conditioning and ancestral inheritance. An example of ancestral inheritance is how the traditional accounting mindset has been governed for 500 years and has deeply ingrained itself - or the funeral rituals in my Punjabi community that once were intelligent steps in a hot and humid country but which now are practiced as a ritual without any thought why it was introduced in the beginning. Metacognition will not unearth those links but once we are aware of these things, we literally can become more mindful.

A key part of metacognition exists in Socrates refrain "Know Thyself".

Such is life that I am being called to go to a wedding right now, but I look forward to looking at the slideshare presentation tomorrow. All I can hear right now is my family saying "we are late". How can one be late for an Indian wedding when being late is a most Indian of all Indian event qualities?
