Buzz Submitted by : Dr. Ali Anani

Buzz : The Deep Dark Forces

Ali Anani explores the dark side of the Jungian Shadow - The Hidden Unconscious Self that many people are not aware of.
If I do not know my hidden self after years of reflective thinking then shame on me, but what Ali Anani PhD explores in "The Deep Dark Forces" is of legitimate form of awareness to help those who are not aware of their shadow self.

In this buzz the paradox wisdom of the shadow is the positive.  That is also what differentiates Jungian views of the shadow from Freudian views - Jung left room to discover the positive within the shadow self.  Yet in this buzz I do not want to expend thought on my shadow self, and if thought is expended on the shadow self then it is best discussed in Ali Anani's buzz.

It is important to understand the shadow or anything projected as darkness as a positive, because we have been cultivated and socially scarred with racist linkages to colour, where the colour white is given significant more value than the colour black :

If the word archetype is to have any practical meaning it is shedding awareness and so it is that we should be mindful that darkness as an unconscious metaphor is not simply an enlightenment about our hidden self but the conscious bias that is sitting right in front of our noses, that we are blind to, until of course we learn to see - and that has nothing to do with sight.  This form of seeing is the value contained within our shadow being .  In the next video Eric Klein discusses the - positive side of the Jungian view of the Shadow Self (a.k.a. shadow self and not shadow being which I will explain later) :

FLEES t, gorgeous, talented,
and fabulous? Actu: 0 are you not to be? You of God. Your playing
small does not serve the world. There is nothing en! about shrinking so that
other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some
CITE in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others
permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence
automatically liberates others.

Whether it is "psychological types" which got skewed as "Myers-Briggs Personalities" or "shadow self" - we do not get the full benefit of the depth of awareness that is possible to discover in Jung's view of the Shadow Self - nor should that view constrain our own view to extend the metaphor of the shadow to its most positive dimensions.   Personal brand is the light we shine where the negative is found in the creation of PERSONA and not the shadow self.  The Shadow Being is the darkness that most frightens us because this is the light - hence the paradox !

There is another part of our shadow being which is the space between absolute transparency and absolute privacy.  That space is as alive as we choose to make it. I am not a shrill for tech companies that have socially engineered systems to treat people who value the hidden as something corrupt and evil - that simply conjures up the boogey man and works on that fear of the shadow.  We know media ratings draw us to what we fear and what arouses our sensibilities - but our shadow being is boring, it is not of interest to people who want to be interesting, in a social media where "being interesting" is far more valued than being interested.  Just because we are moving into a world where there is a sensor in every corner and a censor against our shadow being, only means understanding our shadow being is that much valuable, because the value here is our very own sense of freedom.   As we proceed in sophisticated digital transformation, we will intitally be viewed as product, but eventually the freedom we win, is being viewed as people who have the right to some form private life - and that makes our shadow being important. The Guardian decided that the state of privacy needs a closer look, producing a feature called "The Power of Privacy" - which show just how open and loose we have become :

Our shadow being is as complex as the universe and as our dark DNA.  Another form of shadow being is in our very DNA.  In the following video there is a discussion of "Dark DNA"  Biologists are recognizing that as they delve into the mystery of the genome, there is dark hidden pieces of DNA that are far from being understood but the hidden is recognized.  Whether it is dark matter in the universe or dark DNA, these areas of research are new frontiers that are connected to our shadow being. As science proceeds we are going to face challenges that seek to interfere with the very code of life.   These do represent dangers but possibility here is recognizing that our human evolution has not stopped - that this very dark DNA may release new capabilities for our generations that were not available for prior generations - and this "awakening" of DNA code is highly feasible for the simple reason we are engaging life in a far different way, whether it is biological, technical, social or psychological transformation :

The final word about the value of shadow is the viewpoint of Liz Mellon where she talks about the Leaders Shadow - for that is also a part of the thinking about our shadow being I have outlined here - this is the freedom and positive of our own shadow being - and we would well served to understand this shadow, because this shadow is our actual life and reach  :

We do not live in a black and white world but yet online we are expected to live a black and white bad. We have LIKES and hearts and down votes and up votes all served up as socially responsible soup call online trust. The point of the shadow being is that we need to revisit our online identities as predictable people or at least being predictable to appease the creators of "social systems". Yet perpetual trust breakers do not deserve our implicit trust and predictability. Take Facebook for instance, they don't have my birth date, they have my shadow being date. That shadow being is James Dean and the date I have on my Facebook birthday profile is the date of his death on 30th September 1955. https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/james-dean-dies-in-car-accident. Then there are other entities that prey on our personal data and in this case understanding our shadow being is recognizing how these predators think and how they see us in the innocence of the data we give out. Just like understanding ourselves in a Jungian sense of our worst possible being, the shadow being is understanding what data predators can gleam about us - and the idea here is not to hide from the online space, but be wiser about the shadow we extend in our interactions. There are other senses of shadow being that are positive such as shadow leadership - so I am not presenting a Jungian or psychological framework here - but experimenting with different lens and views of what our shadow being can or potentially is, in different contexts.

Jung is a tough read but the connections he sought to explore are brilliant. The tough part is that how he extrapolates his ideas is by looking for patterns in various stories, and that is what I saw in his book "Psychological Types". One has to read the stories he draws on and at the same time have a sense of what he is trying to show. That the evidence is buried within stories makes us wonder whether the sense we have for his genius is betrayed by giving up on what taxes the mind. It is interesting for me to hear him question whether even brightest of people may understand him and whether he himself went too deep in his attempts to elucidate terribly difficult ideas to grasp. I do find him exasperatingly difficult whether it is psychological types, or synchronicity, or persona/ego/shadow-self but I also have a feel that having the patience to read him more deeply is worth the insights possible . I don't have that patience yet, because like everyone I choose the lazy explanations. I have definitely sensed just how universal his concepts are but this simply underlines that I need to spend more time with his works - without giving up because he is a most difficult read. While shadow being is not the shadow self - I do see how personal branding and the persona relate and why it is critical to know our shadow self less we become preoccupied with the superficial and shallower due to a society predicated on persona.

It is an incredible film and raise just as much questions as it does create awareness.

What Liz Mellon says only reinforces that I believe that our shadow (which is a felt-experience for others) is way more important than "personal brand" and the creation of persona. With a persona we are treating people as one dimensional minds, who are conditioned to respond to persona. For sure traditional media has enabled that conditioning and new media has socially engineered this mindset into their platforms, but people are beginning to awaken to this conditioning. Movies like the "Fifth Estate" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT1wb8_tcYU show us that as much as technology may condition us unwittingly, this unwitting state is not permanent - it is simply a function of people not realizing their own personal power. So it is that I believe that we don't realize our own shadow being, in both the way Liz Mellon describes as our shadow leadership and as I detail in the various facets I have described our shadow being here. There is a danger in the shadow but there is also power - Ali Anani's buzz which I detail at the top delves into the danger, I delve into possibilities.

Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee in terms of global time difference, that is a big part of the learning here for me in thinking/riffing on "Shadow Being' in that it is impossible to know who it is we touch and how and when our thoughts arrive or connect with another consciousness. That is the best part of connectedness - not the technological connectedness but the human one - and it is the human one that we find in our own shadow being.

Thanks Ali \ud83d\udc1d Anani, Brand Ambassador @beBee - ultimately the privilege is opening a new vista of thought because from reading a buzz that serves as its greatest purpose - the ability to make us think. The point of a paradox wisdom is that we can think in parallel because of the privilege we have to think and this thinking incorporates the DNA of that thinker - and here again, the shadow being is a critical part of our DNA. The ability to make us think is deeply connecting to the mystery that is locked in our life code - and this may be one of the most important aspects of what is hidden within us - which is the value of the latent creativity residing within us all.
