An Ex- is Not a Hex...
I met her.
She was kind. She was funny.
She had an engaging personality.
She would giggle a certain way. She would smile at you like you thought no one would ever smile at you like that.
She could make you a tuna sandwich that you swear by some sorcery or magic she included love inside that sandwich.
Because that’s sure how it tasted.
You would go to a baseball game and find out she would hoot and holler for your team just like you.
You looked over at her like who is this person in my life?
You remember the day she first bought you something.
Something small.
Something that came from her heart.
You looked at her again.
And then, it’s as if a sorcerer came and put a spell on all of that.
You and she and that time became a memory.
And now she is your ex.
And by some black magic still foreign to you, she is not even your friend.
But somehow the sorcerer could not steal from you all those good things about her.
You remember her smile.
But the next time you eat a tuna sandwich it’s not quite the same.
And by what kind of sorcery can one meet someone and find you love them, and then they become distant and no longer want to be friends?
Ahhhh...there are those who will chime in with, “Transgressions!” “Secrets” and such. A grandstand of voices will offer their wise evaluations of what went wrong. Who was responsible. Who was not.
It takes “Two to Tango” and all that.
This is more left to one's personal ethics or a Greek debate.
And besides, this is not the subject of which I am writing here.
The fact is this:
The sorcerer did not steal my heart.
The sorcerer was not able to vanquish my love for these beings.
People talk about their exes.
I still love my exes.
Yes, admittedly I have had more than one.
Because nobody, not even a sorcerer can steal something you created for this person in the first place.
In a casual conversation I told a woman friend that I still loved my exes.
She looked at me like I was bewitched.
Nah.
You cannot unlove when you have loved.
Love is not a commodity. It’s not a cat toy you play with.
It’s not something you once had and then do not have.
It is not a possession.
It is your creation.
And you create it or not by your own choice.
And I choose to still love all those who brought joy to my life. A walk on the beach. A good movie shared. Bedroom play.
And laughing so hard it made you cry.
An ex is not a hex.
Not for me.
It is just another trick of the dark sorcery mind to divide.
You cannot divide love.
It’s indivisible.
I know.
It’s still there even as I stand by myself and hoot and holler for my favorite team.
It’s still there after making my own tuna sandwich.
It’s still there because it was never-ever not there.
Ever.
