Having the hard discussions
I feel that the current debate in New Zealand around the changes in special education highlights a problem we seem to have when it comes to difficult conversations.
Our default position is that the pie needs to be bigger and this point of view over rides all other considerations. We need to face reality however, the Government can never keep increasing funding to absolutely every area people think needs it.
The current discussion is not whether or not we should be increasing funding into special education. It’s about where we target the money that is already allocated. We need to engage so that what funding is available, is used in the best possible ways.
We need to make sure our input is received in every discussion - even the very hard ones
